i mean obviously we don't support ai use but i don't think using ai should get you kicked out of school. there's a difference between punishing ai use by grading the assignment lower or giving it a zero and reporting a student for use and getting them kicked out? especially because ai detectors can be wrong and there are reasons why people use ai. if giving the student a warning about ai use isn't working the next step shouldn't be to kick them out, it should be to give them some consequences for use that force them to acknowledge ai use isn't worth it. what's the point of immediately assuming a student is using ai maliciously and punishing them for it rather than giving them a failing grade and/or allowing them to resubmit the assignment without ai. if they really can't be bothered to learn the content then they fail the class but instead escalating this so much that you get the student kicked out is imo needlessly cruel

I agree that ai detectors don't work and you should have evidence before taking action but academic misconduct should absolutely be taken seriously and should get you put on probation or kicked out. It is not cruel to remove someone from an academic program for violating academic integrity. You are not entitled to a degree and allowing people who refuse to engage with the content and cheat their way through classes devalues the qualification and harms the reputation of the institution.
