A Farewell to Arms - For those on the ramparts of the world's sole superpower, the digital winds are blowing an icy chill through the triump
This article is from 1997, and it is wild to read right now in 2021. I was attempting to watch 2007’s “Live Free or Die Hard” and it came up in the opening credits “based on an article...” and I thought that was a weird thing for the opening credits of a Bruce Willis action movie, so I went and looked it up. They mention a website called “InfoWar.com” (it’s missing an “s” and Alex Jones is nowhere in sight!) and at one point they seem to be projecting that Al Gore will be president one day. I guess that’s not an unreasonable thing to think in 1997 but it’s still weird to read. The past is another country. Even the past I was alive for.
It’s just so clearly written before 9/11, before the Patriot Act, before the Russian interference in the 2016 elections, and yet it points toward all of that, so I guess we really are just living out the dystopia we already knew was coming. I did not sit down to be this bummed out! I sat down to watch an aging action star power thru a fourth installment in an increasingly preposterous film franchise. Also, one of my favorite fanfictions (helenish’s “Pre Existing Condition”) is based on this movie so I thought I should probably see it at some point.
