christmas time is here by Vince Guaraldi except youre waiting for your mom in the parking lot of a grocery store during a snow storm
Have You Ever Seen the Rain by Creedence Clearwater Revival except you’re listening to it on a portable radio as you walk through the rain in an unfamiliar and quiet small town. The weather and loneliness have definitely got you down, but perhaps tomorrow things will be better.
NFWBMB by Hozier but from an abandoned church in the woods
Steve Rogers, hacking off anti-homeless spikes with his shield repeatedly while the police surround him: Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry, I’m just– *hack hack*– so clumsy with with this old thing sometimes, you know– *hack hack hack*– gosh golly look it’s flying all over the place isn’t it, deary me-
Police Officer: Sir this is destruction of public property
Steve: *Hack hack hack hack* Is it? I’m SO sorry! just– *hack*–, give me about five minutes officer and I think I’ll be able to get it under control. This shield sure has a life of its own huh! *hacks extra vigorously while keeping direct eye contact with the police*
Tony, about two hours later: Steve why are you in jail again, we’ve talked about this–
Steve: They just got upset because I broke all seven of the sets of handcuffs they tried to put me in. Apparently that counts as ‘resisting arrest’.
Tony: And why exactly where you being arrested in the first place, Cap?
Steve: …well that might’ve been because i destroyed thousands of dollars’ worth of anti-homeless architecture omw to the bank. Maybe.
Tony: For FUCK’S SAKE Steve
-1 week later-
Tony: Hi May! So, this isn’t what it looks like.
May: So you and my nephew weren’t arrested for taking off the bars from over a dozen benches, as well as taking out several other instances of hostile architecture?
Tony: Okay, so it’s exactly what it sounds like actually.
May, tearing up: Baby’s first act of civil disobedience!
Peter, no longer using Tony as a human shield: Wow, that went better than I thought it would.
Tony: Don’t relax just yet Pete, because we still forgot to tell-
Steve, stomping around the corner: You guys lEFT ME AT HOME!
Tony: -him.
Steve: I WOULD’VE HELPED! IT WOULD’VE BEEN A BONDING EXPERIENCE!
Hi can I please look at (and like) probably-gay silent film actress Maude Fealy for the rest of my life 😍
ig:@subwayhands
enough with fantasizing! go out and do! reject being paralyzed by fear!
Daniel Howell: I will have the most iconic coming out video of Pride Month 2019.
Eugene Lee Yang: Hold my beer.
Daniel Howell: I absolutely will because sharing our experiences is difficult and what we are both doing is brave and has a huge impact on the young queer people who look up to us so we are definitely not in competition also this is a lot of beer.
yes! this isn’t a competition! both of them were so incredibly brave for coming out to an audience of millions of people, after being in the closet for nearly their whole lives. they came out in ways they felt was best and most comfortable for them and if you’re going to compare the two, you’re being insensitive. we aren’t going to be pitted against each other, especially not during Pride month.
Well I did not expect to be told to smile when I had 2 boxes of tampons, a large box of Midol, and a bag of chocolate in my basket, but I guess some dudes have a death wish.
… holy SHIT. That is peak contender-for-darwin-awards RIGHT THERE.
I was walking home from the hospital after having miscarried my first pregnancy and some dude told me to smile. I swear to god I have never been closer to homicide, and I think it would have been ruled justifiable.
I was weeping quietly on a train, having returned home from a funeral, and the guy sitting opposite me leaned over and told me I shouldn’t be sad and needed to smile more.
I had just learned my grandfather had died, and was heading down in the elevator to call my mom to find out about the arrangements, when an older man told me to smile and then called me a bitch for not responding.
Had to go to the bank after euthanizing our 18 year old cat. Could barely remember my routing number while filling out the deposit form, and an older man told me to smile.
I was walking home from a test I knew I had aced and I was grinning ear to ear, and some guy in the street yelled at me, “What you smiling at, bitch?”
Listen, just gonna say it: men are ABSOLUTELY the worst
i just read a washington post article on romcoms aging poorly due to the pushiness (and oft-stalkery conduct) of the male characters therein, and it got me thinking about pride and prejudice, and specifically darcy saying, “one word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”
because, like, that’s the seldom-portrayed romantic dream in the patriarchal hellscape that is our world, isn’t it?
a dude being willing to say, “i understand if you don’t feel the same way about me, and i’ll leave you alone forever about this if my attention is unwanted.”
so simple, yet so wonderful in its basic human decency
and dudes to this day wonder why women still swoon over darcy
Note also: Elizabeth turns down Darcy’s first proposal, and in the process, accuses him of doing some stuff he did not do (and also some stuff he totally did).
The next day, he surprises her on her walk. He hands her a letter, asks that she read it, and then takes off.
When this happened to me after I had turned someone down IN REAL LIFE, the letter contained a passionate argument to the tune of “actually you’re wrong and you do like me and you should go out with me” and it was creepy af.
Darcy’s letter to Elizabeth starts with: “Be not alarmed, Madam, on receiving this letter, by the apprehension of its containing any repetition of those sentiments, or renewal of those offers, which were last night so disgusting to you”. He goes on to set the record straight about the stuff he didn’t do (as well as the stuff he did) which is *actually relevant* to Elizabeth. And he, as promised, doesn’t romance her further.
It’s totally bizarre that even now, this can be considered unusually great dude behaviour.
Darcy’s first proposal: “You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”
Darcy’s second proposal: “One word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”
His whole arc in the book is about learning to consider other people’s feelings and not just his own, but the fact that it’s expressed via who gets to talk and who is told to shut up is so, so telling. The first time around, he imposes his voice on her whether she wants it or not. The second time, he asks how she feels, and in exchange, offers her the gift of his silence.
And yeah, the fact that dudes still! have! not! learned! this! lesson! is exhausting.
How surprising is it that Pride and Prejudice was written by a woman, when many romantic comedies are produced and directed by men?
Answer: not at all
200 years later and the world is still full of guys who think they’re a Mr Darcy when they’re actually a Mr Collins.
200 years later and the world is still full of guys who think they’re a Mr Darcy when they’re actually a Ross Geller.
Straight men who always joke about hating their girlfriend are so fucking weird like imagine having a girlfriend and not treasuring and loving her every day smh grow up
“treasuring” and “loving” your girlfriend will result in her quickly leave you. Girls HATE guys who treat them like goddesses. They view it as pathetic and weak.
I hate it when people say shit like this like we get it you’re an
yall hurt him so bad he deleted his Manchild Manifesto
Y’all missed the best fucking part
women: This is what I like.
men: You dumb bitch. You absolute idiot. THIS is what you like. I think I would know better than you???
men: Women don’t like me because I’m short :(

sometimes you say or do bad things while you’re in an awful mental place. sometimes you say things that are rude or uncalled for or manipulative. and i’m not going to hold that against you. mental illness is hard, and no one is perfect. but once you’re through that episode, you need to take steps to make amends. you need to apologize.
“i couldn’t help it, i was having a bad episode” is a justification, not an apology.
“i’m so fucking sorry, i fucked up, i don’t deserve to live, i should stop talking to anyone ever, i should die” is a second breakdown and a guilt trip. it is not an apology.
when you apologize, the focus should be on the person you hurt. “i’m sorry. i did something that was hurtful to you. even if i was having a rough time, you didn’t deserve to hear that,” is a better apology. if it was a small thing, you can leave it at that.
if you caused significant distress to the other person, this is a good time to talk about how you can minimize damage in the future. and again, even if it is tempting to say you should self-isolate and/or die, that is not a helpful suggestion. it will result in the person you’re talking to trying to talk you out of doing that, which makes your guilt the focus of the conversation instead of their hurt.
you deserve friendship, and you deserve support. but a supportive friend is not an emotional punching bag, and mental illness does not absolve you of responsibility for your actions. what you say during a mental breakdown doesn’t define you. how you deal with the aftermath though, says a lot.
This is the most carefully-nuanced discussion of this I think I have ever seen. Thank you for writing this.
