I’m gonna quibble that the fatigue scale should be split into physical fatigue (tired) and mental fatigue (sleepy). I am a professionally sleepy bitch and there is definitely a difference; sometimes you can have one and not the other. (Plus, if you ever try to get treated for excessive fatigue, your doctor may dismiss your symptoms if you use the wrong word, which is dumb.) There’s also an actual medical Epworth Sleepiness Scale, which rates your sleepiness in varied circumstances and adds up the points for a sleepiness score. Yes, I’m serious.
But let me try to separate tired and sleepy for you, even though they intersect and affect each other.
1 - ready for a long day of activities
2 - can do three or more activities in a single day
3 - can get in 10,00 steps
4 - can get around a day of office work, but not much more
5 - can run a light errand
6 - can get around the house, but not go out
7 - I need to sit down for a bit but then I’ll be okay
8 - I don’t want to move off the couch at all, but I could if I needed to.
9 - I am only moving to use the restroom or obtain food.
10 - body feels like lead, may hurt to move
1 - brain firing on all cylinders, on top of my shit
2 - just a regular day, neither good nor bad
3 - yawning a little but some coffee picks me up.
4 - yawning but feeling okay
5 - starting to think about getting to bed early tonight
6 - I want a nap but I can ignore it.
7 - I want a nap to a distracting degree. (Don’t drive at this point.)
8 - getting a nap is all I can think about, bones feel heavy
9 - head swimming, eyes blurry, may feel sick or upset
10 - I am trying valiantly not to fall asleep right now
