I was waiting on a project to render for class and got bored, so I whipped up this redesign for Starfire’s costume.
It bothers me a lot about how exposed many characters, particularly female ones, when it comes to their costumes, even with bs explanations on why they’re as impractical as they are. There is perhaps no more famous a bs explanation other than the female character needs the excessive skin exposure to use her powers, and yet this explanation is almost never applied to male characters. In Starfire’s case, she gets her powers from the sun, just like Superman, but unlike Superman, SHE’S NOT BULLETPROOF! Bullet-resistant, but not bullet proof, and she’s not immune to explosions either, so running around in an impractical outfit (looking at you, New 52) is going to get her killed. Also, she might have an aversion to gravity, but clothes don’t work that way. Superhero costumes, especially ones made on Earth, shouldn’t need super-grade adhesive to stay on, and while they’re at it, shouldn’t be skin tight leather either.
In case anyone didn’t realize, full-body suits are not practical for fighting. They can be really inflexible when not broken in, and in case anyone needed to patch up an injury, or use the bathroom, getting entirely naked does work. Anyone who’s worn a romper can vouch.
That being said, even taking Starfire’s power’s into account, with a need for UV ray exposure and a way to regulate body temperature, a flexible Kevlar mesh would allow for sunlight to be absorbed. Mesh panels on the sides of her thighs, calves, forearms, torso and back make sense since she flies around a lot, and her hair is tied back, because not only would it stop the sun from reaching the one part of her body that would be exposed enough, but also not be something that could be used against her in a fight. Seriously. Keeping it loose is just asking to swallow it, or have someone pull it.
Anyways that turned into a rant that I swear I didn’t intend to write, but oh well. I might do more of these, because this was actually really fun. Let me know if you have any suggestions for other ridiculous super costumes .
