Something that occured to me recently, is how and why Taika Waititi ended up becoming so popular? I’m trying and failing to think of another film maker to achieve such a celebrity status, at least on Tumblr and Twitter. What about Ryan Coogler, or James Gunn? Black Panther outperformed Ragnarok by every conceivable metric, and James Gunn makes funny movies too. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a single gif or photoset circulating of James Gunn, maybe a couple of Ryan Coogler right after Black Panther, and of Patty Jenkins after Wonder Woman, but there’s tons of TW posts still going around almost two years after his stupid movie came out. What is it about him? Is it a cult of personality thing? I don’t get it. And it all started before Ragnarok was even released! I definitely recall seeing people talk about how it was the best Thor movie before any of us had even seen it, and I’m like??? Clearly something about the first two Thor movies worked for them, but now everyone’s so quick to denounce them as boring. What the hell even is this phenonemon? What is it that had people worshipping at the altar of Ragnarok and TW before even seeing it, and why did so many of us feel like we couldn’t just say we hated it for so long?
Furthermore, why do pro Ragnarok people get so defensive? I know I saw some posts by women who didn’t like Wonder Woman, and my reaction wasn’t, wow they must have internalized misogyny. If someone says they don’t like Black Panther for legitimate plot related or characterization reasons, and writes hundreds of words of meta and critical analysis why, then even if I disagree, I’m going to go you know what, that’s fair. Hell, people trash Thor 1 and The Dark World all the time now for being boring and “Shakespearian”, do we jump on those posts and call them stupid and uncultured? And yet pro Ragnarok people do this on anti Ragnarok posts ALL THE TIME and post snide comments and gifs and call us racists.
I don’t get it.
They jumped on it so fast and were so quick to sing its praises because finally there was something on their level. Something they could understand without thinking too much. Well, they think they understand that trash parody and that it’s deep and woke, and then refuse to acknowledge even one of the 30ish plot holes or how horrible it is toward non-dudebro people or just how many wrong messages it sends.
They finally had something that represented them after having had to stand two more complicated films, finally the bully side of the brawny blond was favoured over his heart and brain, and finally the nerds on screen had the treatment they deserved, so of course their saviour TW must be forever praised and the nerds off screen must be insulted. This is my take.
I think the reason pro-Ragnarok fans get so defensive, is because one, they’re the majority so they feel superior and like it’s their duty to put the antis in their place, and also, alot of people in a majority like that take comfort in group conformity, and when they see someone not conforming to their ideas, opinions or beliefs, it’s like they feel threatened by it? What is bewildering is how they can blindly flat-out worship the guy and not know anything about him. Never read an interview, never listened to a podcast, never heard the man speak about making the movie. They think you’re making it up when you quote him directly. You then provide the link to the source, then they say you can’t take a joke, and tack on calling you a racist. There’s a trendy belief among this majority that the other Thor movies sucked. There’s also the trendy belief, even among some Loki fans, that “it’s just Loki, so it’s ok” to treat him like trash. And they say the whole thing about Waititi wanting to humiliate Loki was made up by the “crazy Loki stans” because we’re “horny hetero racists”. No, we just read the interviews. And you don’t really need the interviews to know that.
I’ve seen posts that are blaming “problematic” fans for all the hate and negativity that exists in the Thor franchise fandom now. You can always blame the fans of course, but the fact is that it was Taika Waititi who showed up with his middle finger cocked in the face of fans of the franchise, and called it “respectful disrespect”. He is the one who showed up with a grudge and an agenda, no shit. He is the one who brought the hate in. He and Chris Hemsworth together. That defensive attitude of superiority? He speaks their language because he is just like that.
I think it’s just because, overall, Ragnarok was a good movie. Most audience members agreed that it was better than Thor 1 and 2. While I do like both of those films, I, too, think Ragnarok is more cohesive as a movie. It flowed better, it balanced action and comedy with plot well. Really my only complaint is some of the treatment towards Loki, which I think lies more on Marvel than Taika alone. I truly don’t believe it’s some sort of conspiracy, but rather that in this day and age Shakespearean style stories such as Thor 1 (and Thor 2, to a degree) aren’t so popular. It’s a tad unfortunate, but that’s how people seem to feel. Big action films do really well. If you like the first two Thor films, great! If you don’t, great! If you dislike Ragnarok, great! Like it? Great! These are movies, and people have varying opinions on these things. That’s part of being human.
Whether or not Ragnarok was a good film was not the topic of this post. This post was about Taika Waititi’s cult-like following being unwilling or incapable of accepting that some people don’t like his work. Additionally, you can’t logically use “it was a good movie” as a defense of why people worshipped it before anyone had seen it. Whether or not you enjoyed it after having seen it is a separate discussion.
As for not believing the poor treatment of Loki was some sort of conspiracy, you would be wrong. You can say you don’t care if there was a grudge against Loki, but no honest person can read Waititi’s own words and say there wasn’t an agenda to denigrate him.
All right, after reading that post, I do agree Taika is not so great. I still think Ragnarok was a good film (as does most of the audience) and that the amount of hate the film gets on this site is over the top. There are anti Ragnarok tags and people saying if you enjoyed Ragnarok then you aren’t a true Loki fan. I think we should not take it this seriously and just let people enjoy what they do. Even enjoy Taika, though he does have issues.
As for people “worshipping” Ragnarok before it came out, I haven’t seen nor heard of anyone doing so, but it might have just been people liking the trailer and adamant it was going to be a good film.
There are anti-Ragnarok tags because Ragnarok lovers whined so much that they were being “forced” to read meta that disagreed with them. We accommodated them by tagging our commentary so they could use filters to avoid our “negativity”; and yet, this has not been enough for them. Their entitlement is so great that us talking about disliking their favourite movie at all is unacceptable. They come onto our blogs, throwing around að hominem attacks and telling us to shut up; we do not seek them out or go harassing them. They are, as you’ve pointed out, the majority; yet nor is this enough to satisfy them. It is demanded that all must worship at the altar of Waititi and his “masterpiece”. But if you believe that everyone has the right to their own opinion, then by definition you are agreeing everyone has the right to a negative opinion of something. And if I have the right to that opinion, I certainly have the right to talk about it on my own blog, yes?
And you know what? I do take it seriously. Because nothing is just a movie. Whether or not Loki is real, his fans who are disproportionately victims of abuse and discrimination are very real. And Ragnarok (along with Waititi’s own words) sends a very clear message to those fans, the very same message that Waititi cultists throw at us whenever we complain: your lived experiences don’t matter, your trauma is not valid, and you need to just shut the fuck up about it.
I just learned that the tagging might be a problem, however. For example the tag ‚anti Thor ragnarok‘ includes ‚Thor ragnarok‘. Therefore anti-Posts will appear for people who follow ‚Thor ragnarok‘. (There was a ‚how Tags work‘post going around a while ago. If you want sources I will go and search for it.) I don’t know how it is for people who follow the ‚Thor ragnarok‘ Tag but blacklisted the ‚anti Thor ragnarok‘ Tag, but I assume having so many blank posts on your timeline could be annoying. So therefore it might be better to tag ‚gagnarok‘ which doesn’t appear in the ‚Thor ragnarok‘ Tag than the anti-Tag. The actors and directors might be harder though. I have seen the GoT fandom tagging anti-daenaris posts ‚Danielle‘ because it spares fans the exposure to negative content. Perhaps we should do it similarly in cases of negativity towards CH and TW? Does anyone has suggestions what tag should be used?
Ok, so here’s the thing.
I follow the Loki tag but have blacklisted certain Loki-adjacent tags such as #thorki. Is having blank/censored posts show up on your dash or searches annoying? Sure, I guess. But I’m not so entitled I think I get to complain about what other people post about.
Ragnarok stans are lucky we’re willing to tag for their benefit at all, because you know what? We don’t have to. No one tags their posts with #pro thor ragnarok so that I can blacklist that tag and avoid reading all the drooling worship of Waititi and his so-called masterpiece. I have to just scroll on past those posts. I have to scroll on past posts about how Loki is a stab-happy, daydrinking slut who betrays Thor nine times before breakfast every day. I have to scroll on past all the hot takes about what a good and loyal brother Thor is (give me a fucking break), or about how he and Loki finally reconciled (spoiler: that’s not reconciliation).
And given that, as we’ve already established, pro-Ragnarok opinions are the majority, I’m subjected to a lot of such posts. Yet somehow I manage to continue on with my day without harassing the people who posted them. I suggest Ragnarok lovers learn how to do the same because at this point, their entitlement has worn me down so much that I no longer even give a damn about bending over backwards to shield them from my evil opinions.
