Mitsuri x Obanai angst
Squid Game: Marble round (slight manga spoilers implied)
A lovely little town was what they first saw. They had paired up for this game, a promise they made to stick together throughout all rounds.
As they followed the masked man to their destination Obanai intertwined his hand with Mitsuri’s, giving a gentle squeeze of reassurance. “We’ll be alright, dear, I won’t let anything happen to us.” She smiles at him and kissed his forehead, she believed him always. His words would never falter and forever held truth.
Just then the masked man stopped at a small alleyway of the town. “This must be where we’re playing.” both thought individually. The man then gave each booth a separate bag filled with 10 marbles each. They looked at their hands and each other with confusion when the speaker began, “Hello contestants, today's challenge will commence soon. In this game you are both given 10 marbles and will be playing against each other to get all 20 marbles. The game will beginnn….NOW!”
They didn’t start. How could they start this game? They met one another’s eyes and could see the fear lingering behind them. A tear streamed down Mitsuri’s face as did hitched breathing came from Obanai. He turned to the masked man as anger filled his body. They were doing this, making us suffer, torturing us and for what? He tried to close inon the man but was tightly held in Mitsuri’s arm as she quietly spoke. “Obanai, please. Not- not now..” He felt the tears bleed into his uniform, he didn’t want to make her cry. He turned to her and buried his head into her shoulder as she rested her chin on top of his head as they weakly came to the ground and held each other tighter than before.
15 minutes. Had time been moving quicker on purpose? Still, they held each other, feeling the dread nearing with every second passing. Mitsuri lifted her head and cupped his cheek so he faced her eyes. “Obanai.. I think.” “If you think I’m letting you cut your life short, you’re very mistaken.” “Obanai, please. It’d be for the best.” “No it wouldn’t.” “OBANAI!...Please. I wasn’t helpful throughout these games, it’s been your guidance to help me. You were the one to teach how to get the cookie out. Before these games I was nobody, my husbands left, telling how my appearance had no place in theirs or anyone’s hearts. I don’t belong anywhere, and yet I met you. You made me feel more at peace with myself so please, let me repay you. You are the most important person to me and I want to be useful to you. So please, my love, let me do this for you.” Tears streamed down his face as he held her by her side, leaning her head to his chest. “Don’t say that, you were very important here. Not only for me but others too. You raised spirits even in a shit place like this. That’s what amazes me about you dear, your cheer can spread to all around you. For your husbands, to hell with them. They were complete fools to have not seen your elegance and your strength’s beauty. But, I can't lie, I’m glad for their foolishness since it led me to meet you. You changed my life. I was raised to fear all around me and I was but when you came along my heart wasn’t as scared as it had been. You taught me I could love and it was you who I’d fallen for. It will always be you to fill my heart with bliss by your laughter, make me smile when you call my name. you are the light of my life, shining brighter than the sun and making the moon jealous of your beauty. I love you, truely, that’s why I can’t let you die so harshly. I know you’ll be alright, my dear.” He handed over his bag of marbles to Mitsuri. She looked down at the bag then back to him, sobbing escaping as he threw his arms around her as they sobbed into each other.
5 minutes left. Obanai lifted her head as they gazed at one another. To see her so overwhelmed pained him to his core. He kissed her tears on her face as she began to speak, “Do you remember our first date, back in college?” he chuckled at the thought of their younger selves. “Hehe, how could I not. We went to the park that night to see the orchids, you knew I loved the blooming flowers.” She beamed a bit, “Yes, and how that night we danced together under the moonlight. Seeing you so happy was like a dream for me, at that moment I knew I would forever love you and would never let you go.” She laughed a small bit as tears flowed down her cheeks as did his. Mitsuri printed a gentle kiss upon his lips, then becoming more earnest as they wrapped their arms around each other’s shoulders. It felt just like the night they both fell in love. Both free of their choices, free to love each other.
1 minute. As Obanai released her from their kiss he began to stand up and move towards the man. Mitsuri followed suit and stood up too. She looked at him as he smiled at her one last time. She smiled back and began to walk away. After being gone after a few seconds Obanai turned to the man, smile falling and his glare setting onto him. “To your leader, make sure he gets this message. Through hell, heaven, and all inbetween, I will not let you stay at peace with your crimes against all people.” The man's gun began to move towards Obanai’s forehead but just then Mitsuri hurried back and yelled, “WAIT!” His head shot to her. “Mitsuri! Please go away, I don’t want you to-” “I don’t care! A life without you is a life I’d never live! Which is why..I gave the marbles to another couple, so they would not part.” “Dear..why, why must you stay here to die too?” she looked up at him as he began to weep, she held him close. “Because, I love you too much to let you go.” They fell to the ground as they wept together in each other's arms.
“It’s funny.” He looked at her. “What’s funny?” “I feel as though we’ve lived this already, as though in the past we’d been through something similar to now. If we’re reborn and meet again, may I be your bride?” “Of course, and that time, I’ll protect you, and never let you go.” They smiled as they held each other, placing their foreheads against the others and listened to each other's breathing. A song they would listen to for eternity.
The bullet came through quickly, almost beautiful in a way. All but one bullet had killed them both through the head. As they laid at rest for the wait of their bodies being moved to the boxes it was a sense no one could look away from. Though they died from impact their body’s were still able to hold each other, as though it's always been natural. With both a plastered smile across their face they felt their warmths still close as they drifted away. Through hardships and death they’d make it their priority to find eachother again, they truly did love each other to the end.
