Hello, Mark! Everything is great, MagicCon announcements were awesome.
Small gripe related to very little else going on: I'd, personally, love if we could at least take a moratorium on printing even more Sol Ring cards, *especially* in Secret Lairs. There are 125 unique prints of Sol Ring; "Island" has 790 as of me typing this. I'd rather see any more interesting cards reprinted than the same, exceedingly powerful, functionally ubiquitous commander "staple".
As always, thank you for the time and attention, and keep up the great work!
We’re just going to keep doing new versions of cards that go into a huge number of decks. Players will always need more.
Remember there are always people entering the game that don’t have the staples that enfranchised players have many of.
I know this is a small thing, but this bugs me quite a bit. It's such a waste of slots and other reprints in unique treatments or versions.
Plus, like, I reallllly hate Sol Ring. I hated it when they printed it into that very first Commander precon and set this whole bloody thing in motion of normalizing auto-inlcudes and very powerful cards. So this is really, for me, insult to injury.
okay, for those interested, here is a full timeline of how we got to Count Binface:
1977: Star Wars is released, featuring, of course, Darth Vader
(Pictured: Darth Vader)
1984: Director Todd Durham releases his Star Wars parody movie, Hyperspace, featuring Darth Vader inspired villain Lord Buckethead.
(Pictured: Hyperspace poster featuring two Jawa-esque aliens flying through space in a shopping trolley.)
1987: Hyperspace is released on video in the UK, under the new title Gremloids.
(Pictured: Gremloids cover in the style of the original Star Wars poster, featuring Lord Buckethead.)
To promote the film, Mike Lee, the owner of the distributing company, ran for parliament as Lord Buckethead. He ran in Margaret Thatcher's constituency, Finchley, in order to get on TV. Lord Buckethead was representing the Gremloids party.
(Pictured: Lord Buckethead on TV with Margaret Thatcher.)
1992: Gremloids is re-released. Lord Buckethead rides again, this time against prime minister John Major in Huntingdon. (Here's a fun fact about Huntingdon: I was born there! :D) 87/92 Buckethead seems to have leaned pretty hard into the space supervillain thing, with campaign promises including 'demolish Birmingham to build a spaceport'.
(Pictured: Lord Buckethead on TV with John Major. Other notable candidates include Screaming Lord Sutch of the Monster Raving Loony Party.)
2017: comedian Jon Harvey, having recently watched Gremloids and learned of Lord Buckethead's candidacy for parliament, decides it's a great bit. He runs against Theresa May in Maidenhead. 2017 Buckethead seems to have a wackier and also more political approach, with campaign promises ranging from nonsense like 'nationalise Adele' to gesturing at actually sensible policies with stuff like 'lower the voting age to 16 and restrict voting after age 80'.
He also made an appearance on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. As with his previous incarnation, he was a member of the Gremloids party.
(Pictured: Lord Buckethead dabbing on stage with Theresa May.)
2018: Director Todd Durham asserts his legal ownership of Lord Buckethead. Jon Harvey opted not to go to court over Buckethead and handed over the reins. Todd Durham extended an invitation to anyone who wanted to be the 'authorised' Lord Buckethead.
(Pictured: the new Lord Buckethead.)
2019: Lord Buckethead, now played by journalist David Hughes, stood against Boris Johnson in Uxbridge and South Ruislip. He ran for the Monster Raving Loony Party, the UK's pre-existing gag candidate party. He ran with a similarly silly manifesto as the 2017 incarnation, but with a bit less of a political edge. His promises included 'All doorways to be increased by 1 foot (30 cm) in height' and 'Nigel Farage to be sold for parts'.
(Pictured: Lord Buckethead and Count Binface square up.)
Meanwhile, Jon Harvey in his new persona Count Binface, also ran against Boris Johnson. Buckethead and Binface face off! Binface ran as an independent with a manifesto once again blending silly and semi-serious promises such as 'nationalising model railways' and 'giving £1 trillion a week to the NHS'. This was also I believe the debut of his promise to 'move the hand dryer in the men's toilet at Uxbridge's Crown and Treaty pub to a more sensible position'.
(Pictured: Count Binface presenting the offending hand dryer, inconveniently close to both the sink and the urinals.)
He has a point.
2021: Count Binface runs for the position of Mayor of London for the first time, with promises such as 'London to join the European Union'. He notably finished ahead of far right party UKIP.
2023: Count Binface runs in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election following Boris Johnson's resignation. He once again gets more votes than UKIP.
May 2024: Count Binface once again runs to be Mayor of London, debuting his now iconic 'build at least one affordable house' promise. Notably, he finished ahead of far right party Britain First.
(Pictured: Count Binface with Rishi Sunak. Also pictured: Monster Raving Loony Party candidate Sir Archibald Stanton with a ventriloquist's dummy.)
July 2024: Count Binface stands in the general election, running in Richmond and Northallerton against prime minister Rishi Sunak. He debuts his promise to cap the price of 99p flakes at 99p. This is his most successful election to date with 308 votes.
(Pictured: Count Binface with Andy Burnham. Also pictured: independent candidate Robert Pownell, dressed as a fox for his own reasons.)
June 2026: Count Binface stands in the Makerfield by-election against Andy Burnham, (recently) former Mayor of Manchester running for parliament with the intention of standing in the Labour Party leadership contest.
(Pictured: Count Binface on BBC's Newsnight.)
July 2026 (this week): Count Binface announces his intention to run against Nigel Farage in the upcoming Clacton by-election. He is briefly the only other candidate in the race and by the time other candidates announce themselves the narrative of 'Nigel Farage vs Count Binface' has already bedded in. And then it was now, and then I don't know what happened.
I don't know who my intended audience is here, so whoever needs to hear this, I am begging you to learn to participate in conversations that are about things you aren't interested in.
Part of socializing and having friends is being a good listener even when you don't actually give a shit about the subject.
Your are hurting other people's feelings when you bluntly respond with "Anyway..." and then change the topic.
It can not always be about your preferred topic.
You are being rude. Yes, even if you are neurodivergent. You can be both autistic and rude.
The constant bit for me is too much of throwing up the shield of "you know I'm X", or "you know they're X", and it doesn't really matter what X is. We control our behavior. All relationships at every level require communication and compromise.
None of us have the luxury of just doing Our Thing Our Way and making everyone else adapt. You *can*, but I can also just... Not partake. "It's not a crime to be an asshole, but it is counterproductive."
This post has also demonstrated to me why many of the neurodivergent/ ADHD/ self diagnosed psychological claims just rub me the wrong way, as someone that's been in therapy now- intermittently medicated at different levels- for... 27 years, the aim isn't "well I'm this way and if you don't like it, that's YOUR problem" or "I'm dysfunctional in this way, isn't it funny?" And while I understand there is a struggle, - the struggle is real and we can and should make space for it - you can, in fact, get better/ improve many parts of your circumstances [socially].
That's sort of the human condition. Understand yourself, and decide if you want to be that way, or different. No one is compelled to tolerate you in personal situations. The social contract is to RESPECT EACH OTHER'S EXISTENCE and TRUST YOU CAN COMMUNICATE. Shared spaces are shared. There must be a consensus for how how all treat that space, lest the community we were seeking leaves the space for a different one. We are all part of that. I have put my foot in my mouth. I've overstepped, I've been rude, and likely will be again, but never have I said "well that's my X, no introspection or self-change need be considered", which is the attitude that grinds me.
This oddly got away from me but probably in a good way for myself.
Anyway, thanks, OP.
Hello Mark. Been playing MtG now for 31 years and I just want to say how much I appreciate this blog. You have helped make a game beloved by millions and I hope you are proud. I guess I should ask a question, are we likely to find out what happened to Thalia and Gitrog? Whether you respond or not, I hope you have a wonderful day.
Thanks for the kind words. I hope one day we’ll learn about Thalia and Gitrog.
I need shorthands for distinguishing these two effects (exile and play Now, exile and play now or Later). Any ideas? Elkin Bottle and "bottling" is one of the RnD terms, Maro and other RnD uses Impulsive Draw. But I think there's room for more precise nomenclature here.

Rest in Peace, Sam Neill (1947-2026) 🕊️
I'm pretty upset for the passing of a man I didn't really know.
I quite loudly love Merlin, Jurassic Park is functional perfection, and my siblings and I watched The Jungle Book featuring Neil about 50 times as kids, not mention a ton of other Neil projects I've loved.
I'm really glad he's actually kinder and better than I had realized as a human person. It's a gift I get to hold onto Neil as someone to admire.
ICE is bigger and worse than ever, although the major media have stopped reporting on it. Not only is ICE’s reign of terror intimidating many undocumented immigrants and their families — preventing them from seeking the healthcare they need or attending school or going to court — but ICE is also sweeping into its maw many American citizens who are protesting Trump’s police state. Do not lose sight of this. More thoughts on how we should respond on my Substack (in my story).
Amen, Brother.

Top tier flavor text for me since the day I first read it.
Highly cinematic, and multiple amazing interpretations of how you could say it aloud.
The story of what that woman might be feeling in the short story of this interaction, just solid stuff.

The Trump administration is cynically exploiting calls for stricter AI regulation to pass broad censorship measures at the federal level.
So, in terrible news, Trump's trying to pull some strings to pass this massive internet censorship bill, featuring all the kinds of internet censorship we're terrified of, including mandatory ID for accessing basically any website, specifically to crush state regulation of AI, because apparently this man will always see the moral bottom of the barrel and start digging.
So, if you live in the US and hate censorship and AI you know what to do, contact your congresspeople and tell them do not fucking dare let this through or so help us god...
