I’m in love with my florist...
Does every bride swoon over her florist? Probably, but that won’t stop me. Philly brides, event planners, hosts, guests, lovers, apologizers, and sympathizers -- allow me to direct your attention to the graceful talents of Petit Jardin en Ville in Old City.
I used and ADORED Petit Jardin en Ville in Old City for flowers. With a Parisian eye for simple elegance, the store owner Claudia Roux (with her French husband Vincent) helped me design an on-budget (~$2000) winter wonderland for our January wedding. Picture lush white tea roses, modern anemone, and papery blush ranunculus arranged with maroon privet berry, ivy, and winter greenery. I DIE!
Gold satin ribbon festooned the ceremony chairs, and gold bud vases adorned the high top cocktail tables alongside mercury glass votives. A stunning, 3-foot ceramic vase welcomed our guests, while two 4-foot twinkle-lit greenery arrangements mimicked trees and playfully framed the ceremony speakers. STOP I CAN’T TAKE IT!
Claudia was easy to work with, flexible, and creative; I can’t wait to collaborate with her again for future floral needs, and so should you!
Stay tuned for pictures from the event itself!
Fellow hen Shira is a dedicated slow cooker-er….and she’s helping to inspire me to use mine more often! She shared a recipe with me for Thai Chicken with Peanut Sauce. The original recipe suggests serving the dish with rice noodles - but I decided to be healthy and serve with some iceberg lettuce cups/wraps. So tasty and a great meal to come home to - just set it and forget it! http://www.fivehearthome.com/2015/05/14/slow-cooker-thai-chicken-with-peanut-sauce/

Tis The Season...To Be Crafty! Pom Pom Pillows
The holidays always give me the urge to craft, but unfortunately it's always the time of year when I'm the busiest. I'm pleased to say I was able to scratch the craft-itch this year with a project that's simple, but looks complicated: Pom Pom Pillows!
All you have to do is sketch (or trace!) a design onto a pillow cover, then fill it in with pom poms! Attach the pom poms one by one using a hot glue gun. It sounds tedious, but I promise it goes quicker than you’d think. I did this pillow in under 2 hours.
I’ve found that simple, solid color patterns work best -- but I’m still getting started. I’ve already found myself day dreaming about different patterns and designs to do next!
Want to give it a try? Here’s what you’ll need:
1/4inch Pom Poms (this pillow took 4 100-packs - I purchased mine at AC Moore Craft Stores)
Hot glue gun and 7-10 glue inserts
1 pillow cover (I got mine from Ikea, it’s only $4 and they have many of colors)
1 pillow insert
1 festive pattern (I based my design off this buck head. Looking for something else? Try searching keywords on Google Images or Pinterest.)
1 pencil for sketching

Shout out to my fellow brunette hens out there -- I've finally found a dry shampoo that works well on my dark hair! Not Your Mother's Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo available for about $6 at CVS and other drug stores. Grabbed this can the other day as a semi impulse buy - knowing that no dry shampoos have worked well for me in the past. 1 week later I'm hooked! Works great and smells yummy. Seriously, I might never really wash my hair again. (Only kidding.....sort of)

Roasted Pumpkin Curry Soup
Guys, it’s soup season, the best time of the year! I made this recipe up a couple of years ago - it’s the first one I make when the leaves get crunchy and free pumpkins come into my life (perks of being a grad student in plant science). Hope you enjoy!
Ingredients:
1 fresh pie pumpkin
2 onions, diced
1 Tbsp fresh ginger, minced
1 apple, peeled, cored, and chopped (optional)
1 tsp Cumin
1 tsp Coriander
¼ tsp Cardamom
2-3 C chicken or veggie stock
1 can light or regular coconut milk
1 Tbsp red curry paste
1 Tbsp tamarind pulp or something else tangy (tomato jam worked for my most recent batch)
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
Roast a pie pumpkin! Cut it in half top to bottom, scoop out all the seeds (save these to toast later), lightly cover pumpkin halves with olive oil, and roast face down at 375 for about an hour or until you can easily pierce through the pumpkin with a fork. Let it cool for a bit, then scoop out the goodness and set aside. You can do this ahead of time and stick it in the fridge or freezer until you’re ready to soup.
Cook the onions in peanut or coconut oil until lightly browned. Add ginger, apple, and spices and cook until aromatic. Add the rest of the ingredients and simmer until flavors begin to meld (10-30 min). Blend using an immersion blender or a regular blender. If you use a classic old trusty blender, take out the removable top hole cover thing and place a paper towel then a kitchen towel then your hand on top while you blend. If you try to do it with the normal top thing you might end up covered in scalding hot soup. I learned this for all of us. Don’t do it). Return blended soup to the pot, then keep cooking and adjusting spices until you’re delighted with the flavor. I added a dash of apple cider last time and did not regret it.
Topping options include toasted spiced pumpkin seeds (I like to do coconut oil, salt, cayenne, cinnamon, and sugar), basil, and a dollop of sour cream or plain yogurt. Also, make bread to dip in it!
Fresh bread + pumpkin soup + a crisp fall day =

i am on vacay in bermuda and never want to ever leave. i must, however, and am bringing my hens a locally made coconut rum cake to mourn the imminent relocation of dear @philologie, our hannah, at her going-away party.
in 2010 hannah became my roomie in fairmount, and we housewarmed with a derby-themed party in june. hannah served our guests coconut cake, and so it only seems appropriate that we send her on her way with the same sweetness (and the zing of 80 proof rum) she gave philly for five wonderful years. may dc welcome you with open arms, clean streets, and new possibilities.
Wellp sweet Ali and a post about a cake was the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back and now I'm crying salty cheezwiz philly tears.

A group of Hens got together tonight for a new tradition: Bring Your Own Takeout ... Or as we call it, BYOTO. (Pronounced: Bye-oh-toe) The idea is that it gives friends a chance to share a meal together, without putting stress on any one individual to cook. Hosting a dinner party can be stressful - both emotionally and financially! The main goal of a dinner party is to relax with friends over food and wine, right? So we thought, why not eliminate the stress all together and have everyone bring their own food. That way we can eat together, laugh together - but no one frets at all. We're pleased to say the evening played out just as we hoped. Can't wait until our next BYOTO night!
