Zingiber spectabile, Zingiberaceae
Plants from tropical areas have some of the most incredible and spectacular flowers, mostly due to the high level of biodiversity and strong competition that occur there, but the inflorescences of the beehive ginger are really amazing to look at. This very large perennial from SE Asia is hardly contained in one of the glasshouses at Glasgow Botanic Gardens and Iâve never seen somebody walking by it without stopping to take a good look!Â
As you can see from the photos (I tried to take some kind of macro shot with a hand-held lens I use for identification) the small, true flowers emerge one by one from the fleshy, yellow bracts that make the structure look almost like a beehive. The bracts can vary in colour, from yellow to pink and red, sometimes changing as they age. It can be grown in a container, where it wonât grow to full size, but under the right conditions it will flower. I have tried to grow some store-bought common ginger (Zingiber officinale) last year, and it grew better than I expected, but still I donât have the space to make it very successful, so Iâll leave growing Zingiberaceae for the moment and Iâll just enjoy observing them at the Gardens. The rhizomes of both species are used for their pungent and spiced flavour, but in a Western grocery store you will definitely never find beehive ginger.Â

An entire Manhattan village owned by black people was destroyed to build Central Park
Three churches, a school, and dozens of homes were demolished
^^^^Prominent abolitionist Albro Lyons and Mary Joseph Lyons were residents of Seneca Village.Â
The community, called Seneca Village, began in 1825 and eventually spanned from 82nd Street to 89th Street along what is now the western edge of Central Park. By the time it was finally razed in 1857, it had become a refuge for African Americans. Though most were nominally free (the last slave wasnât emancipated until 1827) life was far from pleasant. The population of African Americans living in New York City tripled between abolition and complete emancipation and the migrants were derided in the press. Mordecai Noah, founder of The New York Enquirer, was especially well-known for his attacks on African Americans, fuming at one point that âthe free negroes of this city are a nuisance incomparably greater than a million slaves.â
More than three-fourths of the children who lived in Seneca Village attended Colored School â3 in the church basement. Half of the African Americans who lived there owned their own property, a rate five times higher than the city average. And while the village remained mostly black, immigrant whites had started to live in the area as well. They shared resources ranging from a church (All Angels Episcopal), to a midwife (an Irish immigrant who served the entire town).
But in 1857, it was all torn down.
Even as the church was being built on 86th street, then painstakingly painted white, the original settlers fought for their lands in court. Andrew Williams was paid nearly what his land was worth, after filing an affidavit with the state Supreme Court. Epiphany Davis was not as fortunate, losing hundred of dollars.
By 1871, Seneca Village had largely been forgotten. That year, The New York Herald reported that laborers creating a new entrance to the park at 85th Street and 8th Avenue had discovered a coffin, âenclosing the body of a Negro, decomposed beyond recognition.â The discovery was a mystery, the paper reported, because âthese lands were dug up five years ago, when the trees were planted there, and no such coffins were there at the time.â Thatâs unlikely, as the site was the graveyard of the AME Zion church.
Researchers from Columbia, CUNY, and the New York Historical Society have been working on excavating the site of Seneca Village since the early 2000s. The work has been slow, with excavation starting in 2011.
The only official artifact that remains intact on the site is a commemorative plaque, dedicated in 2001 to the lost village.

People didnât know about this? We learned about this in school bc the village welcomed and sheltered Irish immigrants during the Famine.
The authorities hated the place because the residents were highly politically active and had ties to the Underground Railroad.Â
A lot of people assume, because Manhattan was in The North[tm], that it must have been an abolitionist-friendly place (and that its residents then would have had as favorable view of Lincoln as residents today have of Obama).
But the truth is: much of the money flowing through Wall Street was profits from the cotton, sugar, rum and slave trade. The Power Brokers of NYC were solidly on the side of the slaveholders in the South.

The second girl at least read the book to confirm that it was shit, she even had Capote on deck as backup. Chick 1 is just lazy
Nope. Girl 2 saw that Girl 1â˛s absolutely accurate analysis was being shut down just because it wasnât stated in an intellectual way (in spite of its validity). So Girl 2 reinforced Girl 1â˛s opinions in solidarity and made sure that it was absolutely clear that Girl 1 was factually correct. I just started studying engineering, do you have any tips for studying calculus?
Definitely! Hereâs the advice I would give you:
Do the practice problems from your homework! Homework sets are assigned for a reason - to help you gain a better understanding of the methods of solving a kind of problem. You can also use these problems to assess your knowledge on the subjects youâre learning. If a certain kind of problem seems difficult, you can make a note of the topic that is giving you trouble - this will help you when itâs time for exams, because youâll already know what your weakest topics are. Additionally, itâs a great starting point for what to ask questions on, either in class or in office hours. Which brings me to my next pointâŚ
Go to professorâs or TAâs office hours to ask questions and get help! This is really important, especially if youâre struggling with the course. A little one-on-one guidance is absolutely great if you have questions about a particular problem or concept, and has the added benefit of making you look like an involved student who is trying to learn more! Professors love students who come to office hours, so donât be afraid!
Make sure that you understand the CONCEPT. A big mistake (in my opinion) that I see a lot of students making is trying to rely on formulas to solve problems, or just trying to memorize how to do a specific problem. While the formulaic approach may help in classes like trigonometry or geometry, calculus relies much more heavily on PATTERN RECOGNITION. It is much more important to understand the basic logic present in figuring out a solution to a calculus problem, rather than to memorize the solutions to a certain problem. That is to say, it is way more important to focus on the process and the logic behind how to solve a group of problems than it is to just memorize formulas and solutions. This way in case you ever forget a formula, you can easily derive it rather than worrying about what youâve forgotten.
I hope that helps!! If you have any more questions, Iâd love to help if I can! :)
Formulas to Remember for the Math Section of SAT
Algebra
Percents:
Percent Change= Change/Original Ă 100
Part = Percent /100 Ă Whole
Examples:
75% of 300 is what?
Solve x = (75/100) Ă 300 to get 225
45 is what percent of 60?
Solve 45 = (x/100) Ă 60 to get 75%
Example: 30 is 20% of what?
Solve 30 = (20/100) Ă x to get 150
Average Speed = total distance/total time
Distance =rate Ă time
 FOIL: (x + a)(x + b) = x ^2 + (b + a)x + ab
Difference of Squares:
a)Â Â Â Â a ^2 â b ^2 = (a + b)(a â b)
b)Â Â Â a ^2 + 2ab + b^ 2 = (a + b)(a + b)
c)Â Â Â Â a ^2 â 2ab + b^ 2 = (a â b)(a â b)
Distance Formula: Â SQRT (x2 â x1) ^2 + (y2 â y1) ^2
Mid-point of the segment AB: x1 + x2 /2, y1 + y2/2
Slope of the line: y2 â y1 / x2 â x1 = rise run
Geometry
Opposite Angles are equal, so a+b and 180 degrees.
All the âaâsâ are equal and all the âbâsâ are equal. Any âaâ plus any âbâ equals 180 degrees.
 Right Triangle Formulas***
Triangle area= ½*b*h ***
Angles in a triangle add up to 180 degrees.***
 Circles
Area of a Circle = Ďr2 ***
Circumference = 2Ďr ***
Full circle = 360⌠***
Length Of Arc = (n ⌠/360⌠) Ă 2Ďr
Area Of Sector = (n ⌠/360⌠) Ă Ďr2
 Total number of degrees in the interior of an n-sided polygon= (n-2) à 180 where n is the number of sides.
For example, an eight-sided polygon (or octagon) has:
(8 â 2) ¡ 180 = 6 ¡ 180 =  1080 degrees
 Arithmetic
Arithmetic sequence formula: an=a1+d(n-1)
a1=first term, d =distance between the numbers, and n= term to find
Example: Find tenth term in 3,7,11âŚ.
a10=3+4(10-1)= 63
Geometric sequence formula: an=a1Ăr(n-1)
a1=first term, r =rate  between the numbers, and n= term to find
Example: Find 6th term in 3,6,12âŚ
a6=3Ă2(6-1) = 3Ă2 5=3Ă32= 96
