I’m at a point in my Spanish understanding where I can watch native content with subtitles but the problem is that nobody on planet earth has any respect for the art of making good subtitles no matter what language it is

There’s this thing that subtitles do sometimes where they paraphrase or word things slightly differently for some reason.

Real dialogue: (frustrated) No, I’m just going to the clock store to buy a fucking clock. What do you think I’m doing?

Subtitles: I am going to the clock store to buy a clock. What do you think is happening?

And it doesn’t just happen on dubs either. This nonsense happens on content made in the language you’re reading the subtitles for too.

I know it sucks, but the reason they do it is because the human mind can't read as fast as it can hear.

The people in charge of the subtitles have to make some tough decisions on how to reformulate everything in order to get to a maximum of 17 letters per second. In addition, there is also a lot of things to take into account: the placement of the subtitles (are there credits? A text message?), whether two people are talking at the same time, where to cut a long sentence (before "and", "so" and other connectors is best, as well as full stops, but you can't count on them every time). And of course, they have to make sure they don't stay too long or start too soon, so if someone is talking very fast, you are fucked.

It is pretty hard to find a scene where everyone is talking slowly, in short sentences, without overlapping, so don't be too hard on the people making those subtitles. I have tried making them myself and i needed about one hour to make about 5 mins of video watchable (I was also translating it, but the process is still the same).

TLDR: be kind to your local subtitler. They are working hard and at least it isn't automatic (fuck those subtitles, they are crap).

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.

Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.

So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.

Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.

highborn lady is arranged to be married and constantly complains about it, but then you learn she's actually chill about it being arranged, it's just that she's known her fiance since they were kids and considers him a dear friend, and she thinks that was a cop-out on the part of their respective families. ugh dad all my friends get to marry some mysterious rich lord from a far-off duchy why do I have to marry freaking william from down the street. it's like you didn't even try

crusader and monk are brothers. monk was ordered by his abbot to go with his brother on the crusade to make sure he doesn't die (crusader is notoriously accident-prone). all he wanted to do was illuminate his manuscripts. he is not happy about the whole arrangement

okay i'm giving them names. crusader is christian monk is brother crispin nun is sister clotilde and noblewoman is lady sybille

christian's entire rationale for joining the crusade was "my name is christian. it's fate" meanwhile crispin is in the background completely speechless

crispin's birth name was rodger but when he joined his order (i haven't decided which one yet) his abbot told him "your professed name will be crispin". it sounded so similar to christian that he begged and pleaded and cried for it to be anything else. his abbot just told him "it'll be your perpetual earthly penance"

actually crispin loves his brother a lot. they just have very very different personalities and they've also got a funny guy/straight man dynamic going on. but make no mistake they are ride or die for each other

actually now that i think about it i'm not sure i like the brothers' names being so similar. you know what that means lords and ladies.

my neighbourhood has never had an ice cream truck. in the summer, we have the knife sharpening truck. it slowly circles the block and rings its ominous bell. i have never seen someone interact with it. it may be that only those marked by death can see it

There are two types of responses: those who have interacted with an afilador/regional variety of knife sharpener guy and those who haven't. The first kind are just glad to see the job isn't dead and to spread the knowledge of it. The second type are weirded out and think it's either creepy or cool.

thingol being depicted as if he goes "ewwwwwwwww dwarves" anytime anyplace whenever and wherever dwarves are even brought up annoys me ngl. the way he addresses them right before his death is absolutely bigoted and speaks to how he sees himself as superior, but he's never acted like dwarves are quaint unintelligent little creatures the way you would act towards an animal you find ugly or disgusting (the "ew it's xyz" attitude). dwarves built menegroth, the stronghold of his kingdom, presumably at his request and he certainly compensates them materially for it; his treasury contains works from gamil zirak and telchar, both dwarves, and it's a dwarf who created his main weapon which he clearly prizes very highly. he indubitably had an at least commercial relationship with them, and one that was sustained over many centuries at that. he certainly did not see them as his equals -- even when accounting for the dragon sickness, the fact that he goes to "how dare people like you talk that way to me?" rather than just "how dare you talk to me like that?" is pretty damning in the context of his view of them as inferior beings -- but neither was his opinion of them as condescendingly low as to see them as gross little wretches who scamper around and offend his civilized sensibilities

You're so right and you should say it.

If they want to have a racist Thingol in their fics, they should at least make it accurate. He doesn't hate dwarves openly until he is literally about to die and obsessed with the make-people-obsessed-and-force-them-to-make-bad-decisions rock. Would the dwarves even have come if he was a raging asshole? No they wouldn't.

Like, out of so many things you can say about the Sindar in the Silmarillion, they are always happy to trade with people who haven't murdered their relatives. Are they racist? I mean, Turin didn't leave just because, so yeah. But oh my god, stop accusing them of every sin under the sun when the book explicitly says otherwise.

Thingol is such an interesting character and they keep massacring him in order to prop up everyone else, it drives me nuts

Went to Wikipedia to check something and got fed up trying to read a film's argument.

Can we please please please stop describing every single little detail in there? Or, if you really, absolutely must have that info in there, can we not get at least a summary part, where the movie/series/book is summarized in two or three paragraphs????

It's got to be easier than writing the entire plot minute by minute. It's got to be. And while I've found those descriptions useful (rarely, but it happened), I BET there are more people out there looking for a short summary to decide whether they want to watch that movie than people who want an incredibly detailed explanation of every frame from the movie.

disturbed by how little ppl acknowledge the secondary health risks of vampire bites. if your vampire lover is drinking your blood you MUST be up to date on your tetanus shot. puncture wounds are at especially high risk for tetanus infections. just because your partner was born in 1312 doesn’t mean you have to die like it.

moreover they should be prepping the bite point with an alcohol wipe.

Please y’all!! tetanus is NOT caused by rusty metal. It’s a bacteria found damn near everywhere, and wounds infected with saliva are especially high risk for tetanus infections.

it’s also a common misconception that vampire saliva is antiseptic. Vampires spread that myth on purpose. They also CAN cross running water. Make them bathe and brush their teeth!!!!
