The New York Times recently uncovered a measles outbreak within the staff at a detention center in Arizona. We've also seen how terrible these facilities can be for the trans community. There is also a lack of medical care.

Alarming new report shows just how terrible jails are for women of color

It's only August, and there have already been three women of color who've gained national attention for being mistreated behind bars. In May, Rhode Island police officers brutally beat and verbally abused Carolinmar Torres while arresting her.

In August, correctional officers tortured a female inmate in New Mexico for hanging posters on her cell wall.

On August 1, another female inmate attended a court hearing in Kentucky without pants. The judge overseeing her case apologized for her mistreatment and said "this is not normal."

Too bad it is.

The Vera Institute of Justice released a new report this month that shows just how poorly the criminal justice system treats women of color. Their findings are alarming, especially as the female prison population grows faster than the male population.
