The best thing you can do is keep watch over your drink. Do not leave it on the side, go dancing or to the bathroom, then hope it’s fine when you return.
You shouldn’t even leave it with a friend tbh, you cannot guarantee they won’t walk away from it, or (very sadly, as it does happen) be the one to tamper with it.
Your best protection against a spiked drink, is to not leave your drink unattended. The things used to spike drinks are often undetectable. No flavour. No colour change. No smell. And they definitely won’t make the ice sink.
This was drilled into us over and over and over growing up through a variety of classes about drugs, and safety, and all the good things I really hope are still taught in schools and universities.
Has your friend started acting unusual or out of character? Sedated, confused, disorientated, nauseous, or ‘unusually’ drunk out of their mind? Check on them. Tell a member of staff, report it.
If you see someone put something in someone else’s drink, tell a member of staff, let security know.
You see your friend with someone, and the situation doesn’t look right? Remove your friend from the situation if it’s safe to do so. Either way, tell a member of staff.
If you’re out solo, and you happen to notice that something feels ‘off, weird, or wrong’ with you, tell a member of staff, and contact someone you trust to come and pick you up.
Your country, your state if you’re american, and even just the bar/club/pub/etc itself should have their own laws and protocols on how to handle a spiked drink being reported. But the important part is that you’re not left unattended in an unsafe situation.
If you are not at an establishment - e.g: a house party, contact someone you trust to come pick you up. Whether that’s your parents, your siblings, your partner, your best friend who’s fast asleep at 2am, just fucking call them. Stay with someone you can absolutely trust until they arrive to pick you up. Report it to the police.
The poster is a nice sentiment, but the reality is 9/10 you will not be able to tell your drink has been tampered with by sight, taste, or smell. And by the time you notice the effects, it might be too late.
Don’t accept drinks from someone that you haven’t seen prepared yourself.
If you leave your drink unattended, buy/make a new one. That old drink is now dead to you. I don’t care that you’re broke.
There’s been plenty of cool inventions over the years to test your drink: drink caps, paper tests (put a drop of your drink and if it changes colour etc), nail polish, and a bunch of other things you can google.
But your easiest, most reliable method, is to not leave your drink unattended, and to buy/make a new one if you do.
Stay safe. Be smart. I know it’s hard when you’re drunk, but stick with your friends, and watch your damn drink.
