Imagine if a like 8 foot tall guy that looked kinda like an alien species just kinda showed up at the house you rent a room in and crashed on the couch and at first everyone hated him but you kinda just accepted this weird massive kinda-human alien species thing as a part of your group even though he's like twice the size of everyone else there
Cuz that's literally happening to sea lions in San Francisco right now
So there's two species of sea lion in North America: the California sea lion, ranging along California (including Baja) but not ranging into the north coast or into oregon
And the Stellar's sea lion, which are WAY bigger and live in Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska
A male Stellars sea lion showed up in SF like a month ago and just kinda. Didn't know what to do, and joined a colony of California sea lions, and is just kinda chilling there now.
Weird vagrant species happen from time to time, but this is just a particularly funny instance of a highly social species getting very lost, and just trying to blend in with its closest nearby relatives
the paris catacombs are 1000x more fucked up than i imagined
did you know the cops once found a fully functioning movie theater with a well-stocked bar inside the catacombs and they when they tried to go back later to formally investigate it was completely emptied out save for a note that read "don't search for us"
Underground french cinema
my little bro is part of the catacombs community and yeah, it's basically a fully autonomous society! enough that when my bro goes in on a friday night, they don't come out until monday for work- sometimes longer if they took days off.
some of the rooms have fully stocked pantries with cooking equipment, some have movies like the one described above, some have books you're allowed to just take but people always put back- every day people bring things from the outside. artists often set up galleries there. there are rooms with mattresses and hammocks set up for people to sleep. one of the room is just a place where people leave shoes for the fun of it.
this is Known, it's not a secret by any means. the catacombs are as big as paris itself, and people live there just as people live above. it's wonderful when you think about it.
A little update! My little bro is now my little sister. Please don't misgender her :)
was outside earlier and a bird Came Up, squatted down, fluttered itâs wings at me and opened its mouth like a hatchling begging for food (it was a grown female) so I went and checked the seed cube in the feeder and the thing was completely covered in mold. this is one of the weirdest things thatâs ever happened to me. how did she know im the one in charge of the birdseed. How Did She Know To Pantomime Hunger At Me. Hello.
thereâs a used bookstore in rural western massachusetts (the montague book mill) whose motto is âbooks you donât need in a place you canât findâ and i just feel like that summarizes tumblr too
posts you donât need on a site you canât search
I don't think Tolkien is a good fantasy writer because he scored the highest at some objective Best Fantasy Book Test that every fantasy writer has to take, I think he's a good fantasy writer because he created a world based on things that he was interested in. I feel like a lot of fantasy writers think that they need to create a whole language for their world because Tolkien did and obviously his books are the best so they have to emulate him, but Tolkien did that because he was a linguistics nerd. I think the lesson to be learned from him is not that you have to include elves and deep history and new languages, but that you have to write endlessly about the things you are a huge nerd about and use those things to create your fantasy world
I met a girl who did a very good half of exam but didn't actually know the answer, so she wrote a full page (two sides), left half a sentence at the end of the page and wrote "Page 1 of 2" and submitted that. Because the teacher assumed it was her fault and that she had lost half of the exam, she gave her a passing grade hoping she wouldn't complain. And she didn't, of course.
In college, I forgot I had a paper (that I hadn't written a word of) due, until the teacher asked us to pass them forward at the start of the class... I had my computer though, and so I said I had forgotten the printed copy at home, could I please run to the computer lab after class and print it and bring it right over? He said sure, he could wait a few minutes since it was just downstairs. I don't have to look at my hands to type, so I wrote it in class while staring at the board like I was taking notes, and printed it off after. Got a B on it.
#bullshitting takes many forms#and should be a skill kids are allowed to hone
Honestly, bullshitting effectively is one of the best things that college teaches you, which is another reason AI is terrible
All these industries with shortages of workers and they canât figure out why.
Im proposing the hypothesis that the reason we donât have enough doctors/pilots/bus drivers/etc is that maybe, just maybe, having your entire industry function as a lifelong hazing ritual isnât the best recruiting strategy.
Doctors are subject to 8 years of post-secondary education and are forced to work 48 hour shifts.
Pilots and other transportation workers have absurd hours of service requirements that start your rest period as âthe moment you shut the vehicle downâ and can be as short as 9 hours in some cases.
Railroad workers have to be available on-call 6 days a week and be ready within two hours notice. They donât get sick time.
Retail workers have to keep a veneer of politeness against any and all abuse or they can be fired.
Truck drivers get paid by mileage and rarely see pay for shipper or receiver delays.
Work should not be designed to make you a miserable burnout and yet here we are.
The return of Shameless Fled Cruz
To all the people in the tags joking about Rafael Edward Cruz being the most accurate severe weather alert system in Texas, the news has you covered!
despite the fact that jud's form and view of christianity is a very pleasant one, i appreciate that no part of benoit blanc is converted. it's not like i expected benoit to become a christian obviously, but i expected him to potentially stay for a service at the end, when invited. or to show appreciation for what jud is building at his church. even just appreciation that he's welcome.
after the whole movie, when benoit is given the invite, he still says there's nothing he wants less than to stay in that church. it's very, very reasonable and realistic of a traumatized atheist, but i almost never see it depicted in this way. usually they come around to "see the beauty" in one way or another. i just really appreciate that they didn't do that.
SAME I was so taken aback but pleasantly surprised
"I confessed, to the wrong priest" is my favorite line in Wake Up Dead Man, because it's so subtle and yet so kind. Martha has been so dismissive of Jud the whole movie. Not outright mean, of course, but she clearly saw him as a tenant who sometimes gave her a hand rather than a priest, and put him down when he seemed to overstep by acting like one. The line is an admission that not only Jud is a priest, he's a priest who does share the beliefs she's built herself over for decades. Even disillusioned by Wicks's self-serving hypocrisy, he still allows her to see her faith as a moral pillar. It's saying "I should have trusted you, and if I had, maybe none of this would have happened".
It's the "because you are a good nurse" of the movie.
the sunbittern is a uniquely patterned bittern-like bird found ranging from guatemala to brazil. they often only lay clutches of two eggs at a time (sometimes up to three), in an open nest placed in tree branches. the young are somewhat precocial, but remain in the nest for several weeks. in adulthood, sunbitterns are not social and are often reclusive.
I hate anti-vaxers now. Actively loathe them. There was a time where I had a modicum of empathy and understanding for people being distrustful of the medical establishment, even though every study has shown that vaccines are safe and effective and beneficial, I know some wounds are hard to heal. Now? If youâre seeing the people regurgitating anti-vaccine misinformation and witnessing their agendas, reading the news reports of diseases that were nearly eradicated coming back to kill children again, hearing the distress and fear from medical professionals and parents of immunocompromised children and still saying âHmm. Fuck you.â and deciding not to vaccinate your children and yourself, there is no excuse for you. Youâd like to see me dead. Iâm not tiptoeing around you. Youâre a horrible person and a terrible parent.
no but "He's on a work trip with Jesus to afford your blueberry budget" is so fucking bad
work trip -> she's gonna think he's coming back
YOUR blueberry budget -> puts the blame on her even if that isn't what you intended
your BLUEBERRY budget -> what if she just stops eating because she thinks that will being her dad back? bc girls growing up in the usa don't already have enough of a complex around food i guess
your blueberry BUDGET -> teach your kid early to minimize herself and her needs by associating her favorite healthy food with her dad dying and leaving forever
congrats that's the worst anyone's ever done it
great question! its what Charlie Kirk's widow told their 3yo daughter
