there’s a post on tumblr about like. if you could do something to bring people a little relief, why wouldn’t you do it? which has unironically informed my practice as a nursing student and patient care tech
i’m glad no one made any unpleasant comments on this post that might distract from the message because that would really suck
shhh i have a reputation to maintain as a cold-hearted bitch

It's hard enough to keep S/M relationships between mundane tops and bottoms free of unhealthy power dynamics. We dance together in an ever-changing stream of mutual needs and insecurities. When your top also becomes your spiritual mentor, the waters are even more treacherous and muddy. Too many people assume that if you are a chela, apprentice, or novice, you must also be a bottom. Is it possible for someone to enter the tribe of modern primitives without taking on a sponsor who is also fucking her or him? Am I the only person who thinks this encourages an abuse of power?
Very few practitioners of S/M magic have described an ethical component to their practices. It seems vital to ask why we want to generate ecstatic or trance states or become powerful sorcerers, shamans, or witches. Are we seeking our true names? Looking for spirit guides? Asking for solutions to difficult problems? Making amends for offenses against someone else's spirit or freedom? Or are we just trying to feel groovy? Anybody who can afford a hit of MDMA or a bag of heroin can achieve bliss and euphoria. In this hyper-rational, Apollonian society, we need more Dionysian energy to give our lives balance. But you can't exist in a perpetual state of hedonism without becoming an abusive, irresponsible joy junkie. Too much feeling is as bad as too much thinking. We need to always ask ourselves, How do we treat each other? What is right or wrong? Does this make us better, wiser, kinder people? Is our process democratic? Are we accessible to newcomers? Do we do our own shit work or expect others to wait on us?
Power (surprise, surprise) is the crux of the matter here. The only legitimate source of power is responsibility. Other people may try to give somebody power because they think that person is smart or beautiful, or because they want to manipulate that person. But it is always wrong to wield power if you are not prepared to accept the consequences for your actions and do the work it takes to use your strength and authority with precision and fairness. A good leader's many people's servant. If being trained to become a perfect servant sounds too humiliating, you are not strong enough to withstand the temptations of wielding power.
Some people are attracted to magic precisely because it seems like a shortcut to power. No grubby hands, no sore shoulder— just flying with the angels. I compare this to putting sugar in your coffee with a steam shovel. The Goddess helps those who help themselves. If you want a job, get your resumé and your work drag together in addition to burning a dollar bill on your altar. If it's your very last dollar. don't burn it— use it for bus fare to a job interview.
I love lesbians who have weird genders!!!
