a short selection of concepts and phrases that used to be commonplace in fandom and we’d really benefit from making that a thing again:

NOTP: the opposite of an OTP (One True Pairing). It is a ship a fan strongly dislikes. The word is a portmanteau of ‘no’ and ‘OTP’ and thus is not a contraction of any particular phrase.

Squick: anything that is a deep-seated, visceral turn-off. Squicks may be shared by many fans or be specific to one; one person’s kink may be another person’s squick.

YKINMKATO, or kink-tomato: Your Kink Is Not My Kink, And That’s Okay: used to indicate support for fannish diversity and to distinguish between disapproval or kink shaming and simply having different taste.

DLDR: Don’t Like, Don’t Read: a phrase used to warn against complaints about an aspect of fic or meta. A “live and let live” philosophy of fandom, which places the responsability for avoiding content one doesn’t want to see on the side of the fanwork consumer, rather that on the creator’s.

SALS: Ship And Let Ship: similar to the above specifically about shipping tastes.

YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary: a phrase used to acknowledge that any given individual’s personal opinion on the topic at hand may differ due to their own tastes, standards, values, experiences, etc.

As the OP points out, all of these crucially imply no moral judgment of what they’re designing.

I’m reblogging this again because I finally realized why this is so funny to me, as a bird person.

In the first gif, what you’re seeing is a man who has zero idea how to handle a bird. That’s a heavy bird, and he’s got his arm stretched out as far as it will go in an attempt to keep the bird away from his face. What that does is create unstable footing for Uncle Sam. The handler is there trying to hold up Trump’s arm, but the bird has already realized it needs to leave or it will fall. In the first gif the bird is not attacking Trump- it is trying to get away from him so it doesn’t get hurt.

In the second gif, what we see is a bird that remembers what just happened and is blaming Trump for it. Uncle Sam sees Trump reach for its tether, and makes a lunge at Trump’s hand to keep him away. The bird /does not/ want to hang out with Trump because it has learned that Trump has no idea what he is doing.

Uncle Sam is rejecting Trump based on Trump’s proven inability to properly handle Uncle Sam. And that is both hilarious and beautiful.

So let me tell you about the shittiest parent on the motherfucking planet.

I work at a grocery store and this man comes in with his 11 year old son. He buys a pack a cigarettes and a two cases of beer. The son was holding a two dollar drawing pad and placed it on the belt and I guess the dad didn’t notice it at first but when I was about to scan the pad he asked where’d it have come from and turned towards the kid and asked “Did you put that shit up there?”. He told me to put it back and then told his 11 year old child that he “ain’t paying for that gay ass notebook.”. So I looked at the kid, who was close to tears and saying how he ran out of paper at home and my heart broke. So I gave the pad to him, for free, and told the dad I would take care of it. I gave the kid some tokens for a game outside and said I would look forward to buying some of his drawings and paintings when he’s all famous. He kids face was so priceless and I thought everything was good. But then, about 10 ten minutes after giving the kid his notebook, I walked outside and saw this. The drawing pad all ripped up and tossed on the pavement. I could only imagine what happened in the parking lot, but I know that that poor kid heart is fucking ripped apart, just like this pad.

I’m fucking horrified that there are parents like this, who, just because it’s not masculine or gender specificthey won’t let their children follow their true passions or explore interests that lead to their happiness. Even more so, I’m horrified that parents don’t care about the fine arts anymore because it doesn’t have job security. Since when did it ever matter to a child if their passion makes them money or not? Parenting is about supporting whatever makes your child happy. Have some fucking consideration for your child’s wants not your homophobic and anti-art ideals.

The following message I received from Roza of Shovava (also on Etsy): Dear Clare,

As you know, I am an artist from Australia. On September 29th, 2012 I have created Wings design, the same one you have featured on your blog. It was painstakingly hand painted and digitally printed onto scarves. To my surprise, this particular design has been extremely successful. Orders were coming faster than I could produce these scarves.

It was also featured by massive blogs such as BoredPanda.com and other blogs followed: http://www.boredpanda.com/bird-wing-scarves-shovava-roza-khamitova/ What surprised me even more is how fast my design was blatantly copied by many manufacturers in China and possibly other countries.

It is now sold on many online platforms without my consent. I thought this happens to massive brands like Prada or Luis Vitton, not someone small like me.

I can’t begin to tell you how much time I have spent on contacting Taobao, AliExpress, Alibaba, SGshop, Tmall, GHgate, Amazon, Ebay and even Etsy pleading them to take down IP infringing items. In most cases I was ignored, in some cases the items were removed much later, meanwhile these thieves are thriving and creating more colorways of my design in no time.

Recently I found a massive US based company called “Charming Charlie” selling my wings scarf they obviously bought from one of the cheap Chinese manufactures – now my design is being sold all over USA in over 280 physical shops, not just online.

I know, some can say…Move on! Don’t spend your energy on this…you should be Creating instead of doing this… and while its partially true, I feel as though that if nothing is done, if these people go unpunished, then more artists will suffer. Also, I can’t stand the thought that these thieves make massive profits on someone else’s hard work.

I have been battling these counterfeit shops for a long time now. Needless to say, it has taken a huge toll on me emotionally and creatively. After seeing all the copycats, I felt like I am competing against myself, so I created a whole new, stunning Wings design but sadly, I am scared to release it to the public, as I am scared that it will be stolen right away. I don’t think anyone, including my partner who has been by my side all this time, can completely understand the impact of this situation on me. I feel so hopeless. I know, that I should be able to separate emotions and business, but in this case it is not solely just business for me, it is my creativity, my life. I consider it worse than stealing…an artist puts his whole heart and soul into a piece, it is product of his whole life, a lifetime of work, developing skills and intuition to create this piece or pieces. And someone them it in a matter of hours all just to make a quick profit. What’s worse is that they are using My photos, even photos of my painting process they stole from my facebook page, and they are using my name and Logo. By “them” I mean hundreds and hundreds of shops! The problem also is that there is no “Shovava” brand awareness, where people can say “this is original’ and “this is a copy”. Most copies look cheap and terrible. As a result, it makes me look bad, because these thieves state that the designer is “Roza Khamitova”. So as you can see, not only my art was stolen, but also my identity. My design is registered in Australia, it is also recently been registered in China. We are looking to register it in other countries. But even with all legal documents in place, I am not able to take all these shops down.

I desperately need help. I feel as though only through social media I will be able to make some change. Please, if you or your followers can help in any way, I would be so, so grateful. Whether its publicly shaming Infringers, or getting some legal advice…any artillery against these criminals is welcome. Sincerely Yours, -Roza Khamitova

I purchased one of Roza of Shovava’s actual, gorgeous scarves… because I believe in supporting the artist. I bought it long before I knew she was having these troubles. The sad thing about this is that someone who comes up with these beautiful ideas should benefit from the sales.
