Current situation just reminded me! I think it makes some folks nervous or wary that I use the words "white supremacist" so casually. But it's because white supremacy is casual. It's so normalized that we don't even perceive it as such, so when I throw it around it feels like "is everything really-" I mean!

Not every white supremacist is a gun toting maniac! They might be the easiest one to spot, the most extreme example, for sure! Everyone's not that bad. However! It is literally in every act that believes, maintains, and perpetuates the idea that Whiteness is supreme, is superior. The idea that Whiteness is the default, the goal, the expectation. It often buries itself in and aligns with other bigotries!

Hell, even saying "I think that straight hair just looks better on all my Black characters", 👀 WHY do you think that? Do you think that's just something you've always believed? Or has it been reinforced?

Idk, I just think if we start pointing out how often things are racist and/or white supremacist in nature, just how casually we've incorporated it into our lives, anybody who doesn't wanna align with that can start going "okay, so, if this action does this, what else can I do that might be better?"

in case you haven't heard, parts of venezuela were recently hit by a series of earthquakes, affecting communities across the country.

as venezuela is my home country, all of this hits especially close to home. thankfully, my family and loved ones are safe since they were in cities not as severely affected. however, many others have not been as fortunate and are now facing the aftermath of these events.

years of political and economic instability have left many communities with limited resources and infrastructure, making it even more difficult to respond to emergencies like this. there are reports of people who remain missing, and many families are still waiting for news about their loved ones. rescue efforts have been made even more difficult by shortages of equipment, ambulances, and other emergency resources needed to respond to a disaster of this scale.

One of the guys I worked with told us a story about how, when they were doing archaeology surveys in the woods they ran into a bigfoot hunter. Bigfoot guy asked if they had seen signs of bigfoot, and he was like "Sorry, nothing like that. We're archaeologists, so we're looking for human stuff." and the bigfoot guy was like "Oh! Recent discourse reminds me of that cult indoctrination trick that's often used to weed out more difficult marks early on, where they tell you all that you aren't allowed to eat rice on Tuesdays and then if you protest they go "wow SOMEBODY likes rice a little much huh" as if you're the fucking weirdo who cares too much about how much rice is consumed between Monday and Wednesday instead of them.

And this forces you to decide whether your autonomy matters to you more than the approval of the group - while they'll still act like you're on thin ice either way, if you give in at this point they know you're theirs forever, because now they've established a foothold, you've shown a moral weakness, which they will brand you with so it can be used against you in the future ("hey RICE-addict here doesn't want help break into the city records office") to force you to double-down and isolate you further.

And if instead you do decide to push back further, after your abrupt departure from the group ("You're seriously leaving us over RICE?!? Seriously?") and subsequent ostracism, you can then be used as a demonstration to the others who were more pliable, of how the outgroup is full of people like you who are obsessed with violating the No-Tuesday-Rice rule to the point where they'll abandon all their friends, who cared so much for them, so it clearly isn't an arbitrary restriction, you're the kind of monster these rules are intended to protect them from, thus all the other wise and esoteric precepts of the charismatic leader are implied to be equally justified.

This isn't just for cults either! Shitty partners, bosses, friends - they all do variants of this where if you kick back the first time they make an unreasonable request, it proves you weren't ever committed since you'd let such a small thing ruin everything. And of course, if it's the third or the tenth unreasonable thing they ask of you, it's SUCH A SMALL THING to be a deal-breaker at this late point in your relationship!

Grim Reaper holding a scythe must have been a much more potent symbol when scythes were in common, everyday use, when people had actually used them on crops, sharpened them, felt the grains falling by the thousands in a single swift sweep. The scythe still exists as a symbol, sure, but it's one that has little visceral meaning to the people that look at it.

#everyone's in the notes going 'modern grim reaper should drive a combine harvester!!!' but they are missing the point I think#a combine harvester is not a common everyday tool for anyone but a farmer#and farmers are a much smaller percentage of the population than they were back then#and a combine harvester is not a thing you hold in your hands#it's about the warm wood against the skin of your palm#it's about your arms flexing out in the sweeping arc of the harvest – the muscles working; the sun on your back#the soft shushing sound of the grain falling before the blade#the perfect sharpness of the steel – a sharpness you have yourself honed with your own whetstone#the smell of cut greenery rising up around you as you work#the way you can see each individual stalk fall but each one is irrelevant in the cluster of its fellows#..............actually the increased emotional distance of the combine harvester vs the scythe is a funny parallel to the increased distanc#which the average modern person has from agriculture and the source of their food#death bears a scythe because farming is THE foundation of society#it is what most of society spends its time doing#and all of society is deeply aware of how the harvest is going because even if they live in distant cities#when the harvest goes bad the cities starve#only the very wealthy can insulate themselves from such things and even they would be wiser not to#all of this changed a lot and very quickly in the last few centuries (tags via @aethersea)
