Sometimes I feel bad for wanting more than just being a mommy. Those times when I worked full-time while aK was growing up, I missed some days with him. While I took care of other people's children and taught them things, I sacrificed my time with my child who I could have been giving all my knowledge and time to. But I would never feel satisfied just being a homemaker. It's not a bad thing to be one. I, now, know how it feels to be a stay-home mom. Not because I have to be, but because I want to be. I want to be there for the things I lost out on with Apollo. The girls are still very young. Practically just born. It isn't fair for them to share their milestones with random sitters, and not me, who wants to be able to remember those moments.
Seven a.m. Itch
I’m laying in bed, holding Cassi, after she had fallen asleep from her feed. She’s a little over a month. She’s grown so fast, developed her own facial features, and she’s the sweetest little angry muncher there is. As I lay there, trying to get my website going (stay tuned), I had this quote in my head, “It’s not what you’ve lost but what you have gained with being a mom, that’s important”.
I realize that it’s so frustrating as a parent, evermore so, as a mom that your life no longer belongs to you. You have become slave-like to everyone else’s needs but your own. You no longer tend to your needs first, and maybe never. I hate that I can’t shower when I want; eat when I want; watch television, or the show I like when I want; get out of the door, or go anywhere on time when I want; get my zero to a hundred done; write when I want; have all of my coffee when I want; eat ALL of my food when I want; wear nice clothes when I want; go out with my husband, alone, when I want; sleep in my bed, alone, when I want. There’s always someone else calling out to me, there’s always someone squeezing into my ribs, as if they have yet to be born, and they find such comfort in giving me discomfort.
...but these frustrations, they keep me going. This frustration, motivates me in my life. It pushes me to be who I am, without second guessing myself, it gives me confidence, it makes me powerful, it gives me superpowers, it keeps my life interesting.
A lot of the times, mothering is tough. It’s never a dull moment. It’s always crazy. It’s always on the go. But, how would you rather have it? How would my life have kept going, if I didn’t have my son, when I did? How will our lives be, especially Apollo, if Artemis didn’t come? How would their lives be as adults, if there wasn’t one more to add to crazy, if Cassi wasn’t made? These blessings, they have reasons, they a purpose, they are my purpose in life.
..and when you think it doesn’t get much crazier, then there’s also my husband. He’s a well of humour. That’s just putting it nicely.
I’ve got an amazing life. Hardships in life, it’s all part of it. That’s normal. It’s normal to be challenged in life. Otherwise, how would you make it better, at every point? But the win; the prize; the epic story, it’s having a family that’s all yours to keep.
xoxo, til next time.
p.s. more updates on the move soon. ALSO, it’s not Lakeshore anymore, it’s just Windsor.
Belle River
Remember at the end of last year when I mentioned that, there are a ton of changes to happen this year?
The first of the amazing things to look forward to this year was the birth of our Third child, Cassiopeia. She was born this month, and boy is it amazing to have three children. It’s quite chaotic, and an adjustment on its own. I mean, having one child was an adjustment, then came the second, and that was even more of an adjustment because, the second time around we had a girl. For the last six years, we raised a boy. But we managed. We learned, we conquered, still conquering, and now, I think we’re doing okay raising Artemis who is now a one year old. It’s a lot to be alone with three kids. Getting one child ready for school, and then getting the other two ready to tag along was overwhelming the first time. What I have learned so far is that, there’s absolutely no such thing as being well prepared ahead of time. There’s no such thing as timing specific things so that it works out you’re on time. If J, and I managed to be on time for things with the first two children, having five people in our family definitely means, now, that we’ll be punctual in our definition of time. But the good of all of this is, the moments that make it all worth while. Just like the car ride is filled with laughter in the back seat because, Apollo and Artemis is now sitting beside each other, and the fun is great. I love how Arty constantly kisses her baby sister. Unlimited, slobbery, kisses for Cassi. There’s so much love. My home is filled with so much love, and it’s all I ever wanted.
On to the next;
J, recently accepted to team up with an automation company in Michigan, USA. That means, we’re required to move. While we have decided not to move to the USA for the job, because it’s just too much with a newborn, we have decided to relocate near the boarder. That means, Windsor, ON. We actually found a house fifteen minutes outside of Windsor, in Lakeshore, ON. It’s quite a nice place, in a nice neighbourhood, safe for the kids. This means, goodbye Toronto. The home, we grew-up in, the neighbourhood we only know to be home. It’s going to be quite a change. A scary one at that, since we don’t know much about being three and a half hours away. The move is scary, the transition is scary, but nothing is greater than knowing our lives continue to move forward.
J, and I are goal oriented people. We do our best for our kids, and we work hard as a family. So, this next adventure is definitely one for the books. Now we don’t expect to be gone forever. We don’t expect to be over there forever, but we do expect to make that place our home for the next few years.
This change is bittersweet. As much as I like to believe being far away is going to strengthen our bonds within our immediate family, it is going to be hard to be away from everyone we know; our family, our friends, our neighbourhood, the things we enjoy within our city, and the things that aK has grown up to know within his surrounding for the last seven years. This move isn’t just going to be a transition for us, but also for the kids, especially aK. aK’s been to two schools in the last three years of his academic life. He’s about to venture into another one, and rebuild again, in terms of his relationships with teachers, and peers. He’ll be leaving his best friend behind, and find a new one over there. I’m certain he’ll be fine, but the soft-heart mommy in me can’t help but worry he may struggle at first. But this is a struggle we’ll all be tackling together, as a family, and that’s all that matters.
Anyway, this is all the time I have folks. I’ll be sure to update you with more great news soon!
I’m hungry.
Baby’s GOT MILK?
I have yet to do review posts on anything, since it requires a lot of research and time to put together information. That’s time I don’t really have, but I will share my experience on using a variety of different types of baby bottles, since I’ve got seven years under my belt of pass and fail with baby bottles. (*insert wink emoticon here*)
Here are five types of bottles that I have used:
1. Playtex VentAire Advanced Bottle
My son used these when he was born back in 2009. At the time, it seemed like every mom had colicy, gasy babies. So every mom was using these bottles. Apollo was a gasy baby. It seemed like he was always eating after the first few months, so we had to make sure we invested in bottles that was going to help with the bubbles, and reduce gasyness.
Cost: Walmart $16.99 / Babies R Us - Gift Set $23.17 Cleaning & Convenience: When you have a baby that constantly feeds, you cannot wash bottles enough. This bottle had 6 parts. So if you’re not sleeping through the night, and you’re exhausted, that 3 a.m. washing bottle time is not exactly fun. It’s like zombies trying to get through a door without opening the door. My husband stood by the sink, half awake several times, ready to just scream BREASTFEED instead. After washing 6 bottles x 6 parts which is 36 parts in the sink and then waiting for it to sanitize, you’re better off buying ready milk in those disposable plastic bottles. Especially, if you’re feeding your baby warm milk. That means, heating the milk in the microwave, after washing all those parts, and sanitizing them. WHO IN THE WORLD HAS 2 hours, when you’ve got a screaming, crying baby?
Gasy and Colicky Fix: It did help with the colic aspect and my son was no longer gasy. So it did its job.
2. Evenflo Classic Glass Bottle + Vented Bottles
Apollo had to use these after the Playtex VentAire bottles, because we got sick of having to wash all the parts. I mean, like my husband says, just like Coke, it taste better in a glass bottle. I don’t know how formula taste in a glass bottle and a plastic one, at that, but I would assume, like most drinks, it taste a lot nicer from a glass.
Cost: Babies R Us $11.99 (3 pk, 8 oz size)
Cleaning & Convenience: Cleaning these bottles were fairly easy. It was four parts, and no crazy crevices to tediously wash. The only negative I found was, when sanitizing them, it was a pain. You sanitize it with boiled water, that means you had to wait to cool them before touching it, unless you had super gloves. Then, you had the actual milk warming process, it wasn’t recommended to heat up the bottle, so warming the milk separately was the thing, and then having to cool down the milk was another. It was too long of a wait. Being out, it was hard to serve the baby warm milk. This meant, you had to have a thermos of warm water at the right temperature before leaving the house. So that led us back to the Playtex VentAire.
3. Gerbers First Essentials Clear Bottles
When Artemis, our second child was born. We wanted some easy to clean bottles, where we can use and go right out of the hospital. We had figured we’d use a different type of bottle after a month or so, since these Gerber First Essential bottles were tiny, plastic and small nipples, it was easy and go kinda bottles.
Cost: Walmart $5.96 (3 pk)
Cleaning & Convenience: Cleaning it was easy, it’s got your typical four parts, the only negative aspect was, you can’t really sanitize it well since it’s cheap and plastic material. The nipples wore out so quickly. It leaked at the bottom of the nipple if you close it too tight. I’ve had Arty look like she just downed 3oz of milk in 2 mins, little did I know, the bib soaked it all up. While the cleaning was easy, and not really too complicated, the convenience turned into a nuisance.
4. Playtex Nurser with Drop-Ins Liners
We switched to these for Arty, after we got fed up of the wasted milk.
Cost: Walmart & Babies R Us $19.99
Cleaning & Convenience: Cleaning these bad boys are pretty easy, because it uses liners, you really are just cleaning the cap, nipple and twist cap thoroughly, and quickly washing with soap the body part. I actually bought a microwave-sanitizer for this, so it’s quick. The only extra aspect is buying the inserts every month. The convenience is great! You don’t have to constantly clean the bottles itself. But you do have to change the inserts often, to make sure the milk isn’t gross from several usage and old residue.
Cost: Walmart $9.97 (4 oz.) $11.97 (8 oz)
5. Philips Avent Classic Bottles
With Cassi, I have decided to switch a totally new brand. With Arty just a year old, I didn’t want to have to mix up their bottles and the nipples. It would make it difficult to keep everything sanitary, with the same kind of bottles. So, the other day I picked up these bad boy. The box set I bought is currently on sale at Babies R us. It came with three of these 4 oz size bottles, and two 8 oz bottles. It also came with a pacifier, a brush, and a milk dispenser for when you’re on the road.
Cost: Babies R us $55
Cleaning & Convenience: Cleaning this bottle is pretty straight forward, it’s like cleaning the Gerber First Essential bottles. Good thing I got the sanitizer with it. Two minutes in the microwave, and bam ready bottles again. Convinient? Yeah, so far it’s good. No complains. Aside from Cassi trying to get used to the nipples.
Mommying Three
Today couldn’t go as planned. I slept at 1:30 a.m., since Cassi has resorted to the pacifier to sleep.
This is what happens, when the hubby puts the baby to sleep at night. He didn’t know what I meant when I said, Cassi keeps me up at night. I had J, put Cassi to sleep the night before our super long trip to Windsor, ON to see some potential houses (don’t worry that’s part of the news, I’ll get to in the next few write-ups). I thought I’d get all the stuff we needed for the trip ready for the night before since doing it that morning, would never allow us to leave by seven in the morning. Well, J was so ‘exhausted’, and Cassi wouldn’t let him sleep that he thought shoving a soother in her mouth would help. It did! She was asleep in no time. 😑 The first two kids (aK, 7 & Arty, 1) never had to rely on soothers, to sleep. I was determined this time around I’d do the same. But that was broken when I asked J, to help me.
Although, Cassi now falls asleep a lot faster with a soother in her mouth..the struggle to keep it in her mouth is another story, another paragraph. 😧
BTW, I’m blogging from my phone because I just didn’t have the brains to bring a laptop with me to Starbucks when I have two babies. It’s funny, usually they bring laptops to Starbucks-not babies. 😒
There are two types of mom (you know this). There’s the laid back, go with the flow, fun mom who kicks back and takes everything as it comes. No worry. Then there’s mom’s like me, who thinks of everything to the T. Mom’s who obsesses about keeping a list/schedule for every thing that’s happening.
I had prepared the girls bag, aK’s lunch box and my purse last night. Even numbers of diapers for the girls, a pack of wipes, a pair of outfit, milk dispensers, fresh bottles, I got it. Unhealthy Monday lunch, for aK (lunchables, chocolate pudding, cheese and crackers, juice box and a brownie bear paw). Where was my head this morning. Everything in that lunch box is something his dad would pack. 😨 Oh right, having a newborn… you’re absolutely done. You can’t get shit right at this point. There’s no being well prepared like you were during the first born or even the second born’s baby days. I thought I still got it right when Arty was a newborn. Getting ready with two kids, was so easy. Everything was remembered. This time around, my 45 min well ahead of time, 'prep time’ was a joke. 😐 aK was late for school, like he’s never been late before.
The lady who’s got this swag walk (She’s got a limp) was already heading back through the short-cut, when usually, on my way back she’s just getting to the school. The care-taker even got to the back gate before me, ready to lock me in and make me go all the way around to our street, instead of having access to the short-cut. That’s how late we were. Thankfully, when we got to the school-they have yet to lock the side door where aK enters and exits from. Otherwise, I’d have to go around to the front and have in go inside alone because how does one carry a one year old and a newborn at the same time, when you’re a stumpy, post-preggo, 5'2 gal with no upper strength? Oh you don’t!
I’m sitting at Starbucks, with a half eaten, picked-at croissant, a coffee cake, and a ½ dranked ice coffee, that’d usually finished off by now coz I’ve been sitting here for half an a hour now. I have no energy to eat or even drink. I don’t even know how I’m sitting up right, because I woke up at 3:45 a.m. to feed Cassi and she didn’t go back to sleep after the eating, burping, spitting up, and pacifier ordeal until almost 5 a.m..and then, the alarm went off for J, this morning at 6:10 a.m. and then again at 7:30 a.m. for aK. .
The life of a mom is serious.
Just waiting on J, then we’ve got a doctor’s appointment for Cassi. The day just began, and im already done.
😩😪😪
Mommy & Cassiopeia.
This wont take long.
We had spent the night sleeping in our bed, alone. We left the kids with the Grandparents in fear we would have to wake them in the middle of the night, to head to the hospital to meet Cassi. It was a long night. We got home around 2:30 in the morning, after almost half an hour of cleaning the snow off the car. The snow storm was happening, we’re heading home in hopes to get some rest before ‘the big push’. J, played some video games for a few hours, and then spent an hour browsing through photographs of Arty on his phone because it was the first time, since she was born to sleep away from us. She had never slept without us before. No one slept that night. Not even the eldest (aK), because, as excited as he was to sleep over at his grandparents (which he’s used to in comparison to his sister), it’s not often or close together in time that he’s used to it.
The next day has grazed us with it’s aftermath of the storm. It’s past noon, and we’ve finally pulled ourselves out of bed to meet the kids at the grandparents. Oh was it a sweet moment to see the kids, after a night without them. The day had passed, with countless trips to the bathroom, bouncing on the work-out ball, walking aimlessly back-and-forth from the kitchen to the living room, pass the dining room. I’m hoping this baby just slips out because I’m about done waiting. J and I decided we’d sleep over since it was really hard to sleep without the kids. I couldn’t sleep. I had showered after our short trip to Walmart; a trip to help get this baby out. It’s past 2 a.m., J had fallen asleep on the chair waiting on me, to watch Miss Congeniality on Netflix. I sent him to his mom’s room, to sleep with Arty, so she can sleep well that night. I sat up on the rocking chair, hoping to fall asleep with the current show playing. I could feel my eyes slowly closing. It’s past 3 a.m., I’ve turned off all the lights and decided I’d fall asleep on the rocking chair.
It’s 6:45 a.m., and of course, the washroom calls again. Ooh, there’s some kind of cramping feeling, but a different type of cramping. Ooh, it feels a little more painful, a little more longer than your regular cramping feeling. I think this is it. I had breakfast before we headed to the hospital around 10 a.m. I managed to get J, to shower beforehand.
This was it!
It took a few before I was able to get a bed, to get examined. But, the pain wasn’t so bad, so it wasn’t that crazy of a wait.
The doctor came to examine me, of course he had a student doctor with him. HIM. Yes, the doctor was a male, and with him was a male student doctor. As if it wasn’t already uncomfortable being examined. I don’t know about you guys, but I absolutely cannot stand having a male doctor check me internally. It is so uncomfortable for me. He happened to say I was still 3 cm dilated, as I was the day before. Not much has changed. Dr. P., the same doctor that delivered Arty, was the same doctor that would eventually deliver Cassi that night. I was advised, after being checked the second time by Dr. P., that I should walk around for about two and a half hours and return, to see the progression. So off J, and I went.
Yes, this is J, pretending to be in labour. Of course, he’s making fun of me, from the last time we were in these hallways. I had struggled in pain with Arty for quite a few hours before the nurses decided to admit me. Unfortunately, I didn’t find out until afterwards that it was due to not having any delivery beds available. There were so many women giving birth at the same time, I had to wait for a bed. Yes, imagine the pain! This was J, and I roaming the hallways in the maternity ward. We went off to see ‘Jesus’ by the cafeteria washroom that scared J, when he came out-the last time we were at the hospital. We ate some food, walked around, and ended up back by the examination section of the maternity ward. A new nurse, taking on the shift change decided to examine me again before my advised two hour walk ended. They offered to break my water for me, and help start active labour. Well, the contractions were finally becoming more consistent, and a little more painful than when I first arrived at the hospital. Dr.P., is said to ‘make things happen’. She definitely got the ball rolling. after she checked how far along I was. They were ready to admit me, so they can break my water. I informed them asap, I wanted the epidural, before the pain got unbearable, like it did with Arty. It was a little past 2 p.m., the doctor was just in the delivery room doing a C-section, and he’d be by to give me my needle, right after.
SCOLIOSIS. It turns out, during the administration of my epidural, that I have scoliosis. It took a lot longer to administer the epidural and to get the needle right where it’s supposed to be. It hurt more this time around, and it was definitely a challenging process both for the doctor and me. I cried, like ugly cry. The snot dripping out of my nose, because I’m crouched down on a pillow, ever so uncomfortably, with only J’s hands to soothe me. I didn’t hate him though. Finally, the needle was in.
What a relief! From this point on, the story is…birthing a human baby is one of the toughest thing a woman can ever go through. It’s tough on your body, mind, soul. It requires strength that you don’t normally have. It requires, so much love to get through. But worth everything, and then some when it is all finished.
March 3rd., 7:30 p.m., Cassiopeia Reine was born. She weighed 6lbs 11oz.
Beauty!
Apollo // Artemis // Cassiopeia
My everything, in one photo.
Cassiopeia Reine M. Hernandez March 3rd, 2016 // St.Joseph Health Care Center // 6lbs 11oz // 7:30 p.m. Hello Everyone! Yes, it’s been quite some time since I’ve posted any updates for all of you. It went from being super ‘done’ with being pregnant, to BAM, having Cassi join our team. :)
There is a lot to catch up on. There is plenty of news to be told. Good news, bad news, news, news, news!
You’re going to have to be patient with me, in the next few months. There are a lot of changes happening, transitions, that I won’t be as consistent, as how consistent I am now with my updates. I mean, cammmoooonn’, I just added another child to the tier. It’s super crazy up in this house right now. These children seem to be more needy than ever. I’ve yet to recover, fully recover. I actually ended up in the hospital six days post-baby because, well, random, severe abdominal pain. Turns out, it was endometriosis (google it-I just had to google how to spell it, lol).
Cassi is a healthy, tiny, baby, that makes cute noises when her sneeze’s don’t come out. Her siblings appear to be enjoying the new addition, but the second born (ARTY), has some jealousy issues (as to be expected). Arty being daddy’s girl, she absolutely cannot stand it when her daddy carries Cassi. Long story short, the dramatic tears overflow at any given moment, causing chaos up in here. The older one, Apollo, he’s in love with Cassi. Absolutely adores her.
Next up: Labour Story.
..to be continued, I’m hungry.
Where ze baby?
I'm having trouble sleeping. I figured why not update you guys. I'm writing from my phone, so the quality of this post will not be up to par, in terms of my expectations. My due date is March 5th. It's literally two days away, but at my last OB appointment on Tuesday, my doctor examined me to see how far along the baby was. I happened to be 3cm dilated. She also scraped the membrane to help with getting things going. She said, I wouldn't last to the weekend, and that I would the baby either that night or the day after, at some point. Its now, 2:28 a.m. Thursday. Still no baby! I thought the bloody mucus discharge you get meant it's almost that time, since both times before, thats what happened. It seems the snow storm passing, the roads being shovelled, and the side walks being salted, has come and gone, and this baby is just not ready. What is it about Pisces? Such stubborn people. LOL I spent the day bouncing on an excercise ball, walking around the house, walking for 45 mins at Walmart, eating spicy chicken, and even allowing my brother-in-law to drive me over bumps (since he was responsible for aK's arrival, seven years ago). I'm praying to God, she comes today at some point. I know, I sound crazy, seemingly rushing Cassi to come out; especially with already knowing the process of labour, but...i'm so tired of being pregnant (two yrs in a row). I'm tired of not being able to do much because i've grown so much, it's just impossible at this point. I've got packing to do for our move, that I have yet to figure out. I just need Cassi out. 😕 Ill update again soon...
11 Days to go. Hii 🙋 !! I know, where in the world have I been? Well.. it went from the food poisoning, to the kids just being sick, on and off. Its been crazy busy with getting bigger and bigger, and being closer to Cassiopeia arriving. I'm sorry I've been MIA. You'll also have to forgive me for my soon-to-be expected inconsistency, once the baby gets here. Don't worry I'll have newborn photos for you guys, soon as she gets here and I find time between the three kids and home. I've got plenty of news in the next couple of months so stay tuned and please be patient with me. Thank you for your messages and love. I appreciate all the updates and hello's. I do read them and try to respond when I can.❤
Mental Illness//’#BellLetsTalk’
iYesterday, ‘Bell’, a mobile/television network provider in Canada had it’s supportive initiative about bringing awareness to everyone about the importance of recognizing Mental Illness in our society.
Mental Illness is hard to talk about. Not everyone knows when its happening, or knows what to do when it does happen. There’s a stigma around it, that makes it hard for everyone to be one about it. It is a sensitive matter, and at some point in life people will experience this, maybe not always to its full extent but it happens to a lot of people, every day. I personally can relate to this. I have battled depression at many points in my life. I say many points, because I feel like it went away, and came back at certain times for me. But depression doesn’t go away. It merely hides in the back burner, and catches up with you when you least expect it.
Depression isn’t a thing that you sort of choose to be in. It kinda just takes over you, not choosy of any specific situations. It isn’t that you’re too weak, or inexperience in life that you get into a rut, it’s just sometimes mentally, you get really lost, in the feelings. And everything in the feels kinda just mesh, and you’re a lost soul–until you get help.
When you struggle with depression, it’s hard for anyone else to help you, unless they’re truly educated about it. You become distant, you become isolated, and it gets hard to socialize. You lose friends, sometimes family members from being in it. It’s probably the hardest thing I ever had to go through. To feel alone, to feel lost, to feel like there’s no point in anything.
In a funk.
I haven’t been able to blog the way I want to, because I seem to be in a funk. The days of Cassiopeia’s arrival is coming very close (37 days to go), and I guess my body is just preparing for it. Thus, I’ve been feeling a lot of things lately. One with aches, two sleeplessness, and three, just exhaustion from my daily grind.
I got braxton hicks the other night, it was a lot more painful that i’ve ever gotten them before. With aK & Arty, they didn’t really interfere with what I had to do physically. This time around, I had to literally lay down. I just wanted to crawl into a ball, and squeeze my stomach. It hurt so much, I literally fell asleep.
I know I’ve said a few times in my previous posts, but I’m literally starting to get really tired, I just don’t want to mommy from now until I give birth to this baby. It’s so hard to get through the day with all that I have to get through, and be eight months pregnant. It’s crazy. But, I’ve got a month and a bit left. I’m just going to have to push through this.
Crazy Ones.
It’s five past nine. One is asleep, the other terrorizing the living-room. The one terrorizing the living room, seems to be in a phase lately where she’s mad at the world, and everyone else. She babbles, but I have no clue what she’s trying to say. Arty turned one in the beginning of January, is she going through the crazy ones, twos, and threes? She can say no, now. She climbs the couch, and can walk here and there. The crazy thing is, she’s been mad lately. Mad during nap times, mad during feeding time, mad during chillin’ time.. she’s always scratching, whining, and just plain crazy in the last few days. Is it the weather? Is it the Winter Blues? I’m currently blogging from my kitchen, because Arty is on a crazy frenzy of scratching like a cat. Today she must have scratched me an insanely amount of time that I’ve stopped counting. But anyway, that’s my kitchen, which still smells like fried milkfish, which I had cooked for dinner tonight, with a side of fried eggplant and tomatoes. Typical Filipino dinner tonight. I’ll be posting some photos of dishes I’ve cooked recently. Just been too lazy to edit them. Anyway, I’m signing off for the night. The hubby is enjoying the movie, “Mama Mia”, I think I’ll join him. :)
