REVIEW - THE GREATEST SHOWMAN
Having grown up loving musicals I’m always interested in seeing how modern creatives take up the mantle. We know the Golden era of Hollywood to consist of really tight, well choreographed, at times upbeat, fast paced, overall classic musicals. In today’s age, we don’t see as many musicals brought to life on screen. Not to say that these past few years we haven’t seen an escalation in on screen musicals. What I’m saying is, today’s musical needs to have a variety of levels to capture, entertain and make an impact on audiences around the world. I feel like this was achieved in The Greatest Showman (directed by Australian, Michael Gracey).
Between the performances, the themes, the choreography, the music, story and costuming we have an all round wonderful piece of art. I’m always so pleased when a film takes on a theme and really hones in the concept within an uplifiting setting. The theme here being, acceptance. Of embracing how unique each and every one of us are and highlighting the importance of equality and creativity. I’ve always loved quotes to do with imagination and I feel like this movie is one big quote promoting how inspiring you can truly be utilizing the power of imagination.
For me the major thing that stood out was the choreography (by Australian, Ashley Wallen) and for that matter how the dancing worked in amoungst the stunning sets. I was getting elements of Moulin Rouge!, Strictly Ballroom, Kenny Ortega inspired choreography. We had the full cast choreography at different parts of the movie, like in the circus ring, where special effects were utilized to create such a spectacular moment as Lettie Lutz (Keala Settle) sings and everyone else is jumping in slow motion. Then when Anne Wheeler (Zendaya) and Phillip Carlyle (Zac Efron) are doing their duet with the amazing utilization of the rope as a tool to move around and work within the space. Capped off with the stellar performance in the bar at the end of the movie. I honestly left the theatre thinking, where can I find a video or teacher to learn these dances?!
A lot can be said with the opening song of a musical. Upon hearing the opening song in The Greatest Showman, I instantly thought, this is going to be good. I also thought about other musicals where the song made an impact on me, Les Miserables, Frozen, The Wizard of Oz, just to name a few. Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum really hones in on what I was talking about before, that old world Hollywood style of performing, he can do action, he can do drama, and he can sing and dance. Which we’ve known for years, but this film harnesses all of that. I knew a couple of the tracks enough to bop along to the beat, but I was even doing so with the songs I didn’t know. There were some tunes that reminded me of musicals and shows I’ve seen or heard of over the years. Parts of the dancing and singing reminded me of the TV series Smash. It’s not hard to see the influence, genius, Lin Manuel Miranda has had on the industry. Also on what is the anniversary release of Chicago (2002) it’s great to see how elements of that iconic musical are still prevalent in today’s artistic ventures. I actually want to marathon all these movies and albums, The Greatest Showman was that inspiring.
Knowing very little about P.T Barnum, Hugh Jackman appears to have pulled the role off. I’ve already spoken about just how talented Jackman is when it comes to his overall performance, but I feel there were others in the film that totally surprised me. That being Zac Efron and Zendaya. Both originating from the Disney club, their performances exceeded my expectations. Not to say I thought they wouldn’t be on par with Jackman, I left the theatre thinking they were talents to watch out for in the years to come. I also loved the performances by Keala Settle, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as W.D. Wheeler, Michelle Williams as Charity Barnum and Rebecca Ferguson as Jenny Lind. I loved the interaction between all the characters, particularly these. In the scenes that are significantly more emotional, and of course the singing and dancing. Another element that comes into play here are the costumes. They add so much to a character and again, the film was rich and lush in colour and overall helped bring that other element of creative genius to the film. I also left the cinema wanting every single one of Michelle Williams’ looks.
Overall, from start to finish you’ll be entertained. We start off with a glimpse of what to expect, we begin to discover a world of imagination and creativity and then we go through the paces of what life can behold. If you haven’t seen this film, make sure you do so in theatres now.

REVIEW - JUSTICE LEAGUE
To say I was channelling Sirius Black from Harry Potter when he says, “I did my waiting, 12 years of it…” would be an understatement. I’ve been fan of the Justice League for over 15 years and I distinctly remember around 10 years ago hearing talk of a possible Justice League film. Finally, we have it!
Tonight our favourite DC Superheroes joined forces! Having grown up watching all the animated series and playing with our very own Justice League Watchtower and figurines, to see the inception of what we know and love come to life on screen was quite something. I will try to go as in depth as I can without giving anything away, so make sure you watch it.
We find ourselves where Batman v Superman left us, dealing with the loss of Superman (Henry Cavill). Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) with the help of Alfred (Jeremy Irons) are on a quest to find fellow special beings to join their team and unite against a looming danger. A new villain in the form of another god like alien being, has decided to make his presence known. We learn that this villain has a history with humans, Amazonians and Atlanteans (with a special appearance from the Green Lantern Corps). It is from this point that the two leaders recruit superfolk who are on their radar, Cyborg (Ray Fisher), The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Aquaman (Jason Momoa).
Much like Suicide Squad I enjoyed the little back stories into each of the characters lives. Wonder Woman and Batman were the exception, where we were given a dose of what they do best, fight crime and save the day. What I also liked was the way in which we as an audience were put into the positions of some characters. Such as Batman and Wonder Woman, learning about the abilities of each character. Whilst we as fans know historically what the powers of each superhero entails, who knows how it will be written in the film. I was pleased to see how the film makers approached this, particularly when we already have some of these characters in the DCTV universe. We were also able to relate to The Flash, who like us would be super excited to join and check out all the gadgets but then, in certain moments think, “all I’ve done is push people and run away.” At one moment I thought, I have to be honest as much as I’d like to be Wonder Woman, we all know I’d be Flash. Which is equally just as cool.
That’s just it. Each character owned it. In my mind they even set up the ground work for their own solo stories. I’m talking Flashpoint, Aquaman and even a Cyborg film. After the success of Wonder Woman, we know DC can do a great origins story. Flash will be incredibly interesting as we already have the tv series, however if filmmakers follow what we already know about Flashpoint I will be mighty happy. Aquaman has just wrapped filming in Australia, and we can’t wait to see it (especially after tonight’s scenes) and come on, we’re talking Aquaman, or at least the way we see Momoa portray him is unlike any superhero we’ve seen before. Which brings us to Cyborg, who we know from Teen Titans, wasn’t part of the Justice League origins team, but I really loved the addition into the film. I love the intellectual side of it all, having been given glimpses into it during Justice League.
I have to talk about the different worlds, Themyscira featured in Justice League with all the Amazonians doing what they do best, amazing fight sequences that made me want to watch Wonder Woman 2 all the much sooner. Honestly, the fight sequence where we last leave the Amazonians was my favourite. The way in which they worked as a team, as one unit looked spectacular. Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) returns and puts on quite a remarkable performance. I remember the scenes so vividly as they were shot so well. They were truly breathtaking scenes. Then we visit Atlantis, where we come across the Atlanteans and in particular Mera (Amber Heard), who we know to be Aquaman’s wife. Mera was beyond what I expected her to be in this film. I was so happy to see the way she came to life on screen, I remember thinking, ‘yes! Another powerful, strong woman.’ I can’t wait to see what she brings in Aquaman. I also found her interaction with Aquaman to be quite interesting. The dynamic between the two was so real and unique in terms of superhero love interests.
I absolutely loved the fight sequences towards the end, where the team unite. I was smiling like the Joker at that point, so enamoured by what I was watching. What I had been waiting years to see. The colour grading as always lends to add that extra element that makes a DC film just that, a DC film. It has that dark, grungy quality to it, which really adds to the overall feel of each film. It really worked in this film and at times I was thinking back to previous Batman films, both the 80-90’s and 00’s trilogies. The music was the perfect addition to each scene. My particular favourite was Aquaman aka Arthur Curry walking back to the ocean, drinking whiskey as a rocking track accompanies his strut. Reminded me of the scene in Suicide Squad where Deadshot is showing the prison staff just what he can do. Gary Clark Jr.’s cover of Come Together was one I thought, need to download and work out to this track, Wonder Woman style.
There were some parts I’d edit down, like some of the more strategy talk, yes, it served a purpose, but I think it could have been done more succinctly. Also there was a fair amount of power posing done by the League. It wouldn’t be the Justice League without it though. In amongst all the action and drama there were some really great comedic moments. Each character had their own sense of humour. It wasn’t verbal, it was physical too. Flash was the king of comedy, the little idiosyncrasies he added working off others was so well done. The fist bump scene, for instance, which was further seen at the end of the film, and the scene where they’re all flying and Aquaman walks off having just intimidated Flash, Flash’s reaction in each situation is perfect. I enjoyed seeing the different sides to each character, like Batman, actually overjoyed when he reunites with a certain character. It was also great to see Lois Lane (Amy Adams) and Martha Kent (Diane Lane) return to add another element to the aftermath of Superman’s passing. I really liked Lois’ role in the film, much like Martha, it shows the reality of certain situations. Two other characters return, but I can’t delve into these characters without giving things away. We’re also introduced to a certain character who will join the DC universe. Saving all that for a possible spoiler talk review.
Justice League met my expectations and I can’t wait to see it again. I definitely recommend it and I actually can’t wait to marathon all the DC films and then go watch this again. It’s the perfect addition to the DC universe.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OFFICIAL HEROES TRAILER RELEASED
FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY! The new Justice League trailer has been released and we finally have answers. We have a storyline too, or at least something that resembles an idea to the possible plot line the superhero film will follow. It looks so amazing, and we catch a glimpse of Superman!
Whether it's a dream or in fact reality, we will establish that next month when we finally watch the film. I feel a bit like Sirius Black at the moment, channelling the whole "I did my waiting... 12 years of it..." because it's probably been that long personally waiting for this film! (I'm sure it's been longer for others).
Plus having David Bowie's, Heroes as the soundtrack for this trailer is pure genius. The imagery is on point and we hear more from Aquaman (Jason Momoa) which is a great bonus (this coming off Oz Comic Con weekend, having had a mini reunion with the legend). Wonder Woman, again, shines! She'll be a standout in the team. Honestly counting down the days now!

REVIEW - KINGSMAN THE GOLDEN CIRCLE
Having loved the original Kingsman I was so excited to learn there was a second in the works. I had no idea how they would approach the new film considering Harry (Colin Firth) was no longer in the picture. The first film established Eggsy (Taron Egerton) as the lead in the next chapter of the Kingsman. Kingsman: The Golden Circle starts by introducing you to just that The Golden Circle. Oddly enough when you first read the title of the film it conjures up images of Bond. Then the film begins in the middle of a jungle, reminiscent of the Bond villain lairs. We are introduced to the villain in this tale Poppy (Julianne Moore) who throughout the film plays this sickly sweet character who is both so fake in her sincerity and charm, whilst cold and calculating. Then we’re greeted by a familiar face, Eggsy, who we see has really embraced the Kingsman lifestyle. We also launch straight into the fight sequences. One of the coolest car chase scenes ensues. I absolutely loved the camera angles and techniques used in this sequence, as well as the other fight scenes within the film. This opening scene, in particular, use drone style footage. It really worked as you were gaining a birds eye perspective of the many cars travelling through the streets, with all the glittering lights of the surrounding cars and buildings, mixed with the gunshots sparking off the metal. The person in pursuit of Eggsy (who earlier confronted him in front of the Kingsman tailor shop) is scorned ex Kingsman Charlie (Edward Holcroft), who now has a bionic arm. We learn that Charlie now works for drug lord Poppy, who has embraced the bionic era, as evidenced by her bot dogs and updated bionic arm for Charlie. Familiar faces are back Mark Strong returns as Merlin (who throughout the film has a weird obsession with the song ‘Country Road’), Sophie Cookson returns as Roxy and Hanna Alstrom, reprises her role as Princess Tilde, Eggsy’s girlfriend. The moment Poppy extracts her revenge on the Kingsman actually shocked me. This then prompts Eggsy and Merlin to take action and enlist the help of their cohorts in America, the Statesmen. I wasn’t that drawn to the American side of the story. I found Pedro Pascal shines as the lasso toting Whiskey. I absolutely loved his fight sequences where slow motion was utilised much like the style of the first films where we see Harry fighting. Again, to draw a parallel we have a bar scene where Whiskey teaches a pack of goons some manners. Jeff Bridges as the Head of the Statesmen fills the brief perfectly. There’s something about his voice that really creates a sense of authority to any situation. Channing Tatum as Tequila didn’t really make an impact on me. Whilst Channing did a great job with the accent and fight scene, the character didn’t really offer a lot to the story and it’s fairly evident half way through the film. Also, I really wish they utilized Halle Berry’s character Ginger more, like the way they established Merlin in the first film. It’s a hard thing to avoid, so skip to the next paragraph if you don’t want a bit of a spoiler. One thing that didn’t sit too well with me was the return of Harry and the manner in which he performed throughout the film. I really disliked Harry in the sequel. Yes, the Statesmen found him and saved him, he then suffered from amnesia. When he eventually recovers he’s still lacking that Harry quality that made him so likeable in the first. The fluidity to his character changes and it’s just not the same. Yes, he’s physically and mentally different, but I don’t think it worked. I’m contemplating the idea that if his character wasn’t in the sequel it wouldn’t be that different. In contrast, the relationship between Eggsy and Whiskey was great to see, particularly the sky lift scene. One particular character in the film, that had the whole cinema in stitches, was Elton John as Elton John. He was absolutely hilarious from start to finish, with opulent costumes and unique performances contributing to the storyline. Overall, I definitely think I’ll see this film again in cinemas. There were elements that really worked, and perhaps if there were more of a focus on those scenes and more fight sequences it would be closer to the level achieved in the first. Rating: 3/5 ☆☆☆

Victoria & Abdul based on a true story focuses on Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) and her friendship with a young clerk Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal). As someone who is fascinated with the reign of Queen Victoria, this story was one that I had never heard of and one that I will always remember. ARIANA GRANDE - ICC SYDNEY -REVIEW
Ariana Grande kicked off her her first of two nights at Sydney’s ICC by telling fans “we’re gonna be alright”. The powerhouse pop star is currently embarking on her first Australian tour, and it was worth the wait.
Grande opened the show with fan favourite ‘Be Alright’. The highly choreographed number, featuring 10 back up dancers, was reminiscent of Madonna’s iconic ‘Vogue’ Choreography. Grande then played through a bevy of tracks from 2016’s ‘Dangerous Woman’, including ‘Everyday’, ‘Bad Decisions’, ‘Let Me Love You’, ‘Knew Better’ and ‘Forever Boy’.
‘One Last Time’, a personal favourite, sent fans into an eruption or roaring. The track became one of Grande’s most famous anthems earlier this year after the tragic events that took place at her Manchester performance. The lighting and staging production here was stripped bare allowing her vocals to be the main focus. Grande’s soaring vocals continued on through tracks ‘Touch It’ and a highlight of the night, ‘Leave Me Lonely’.
‘Side to Side’ saw the pop star bring her famous video to life, with a staging set up full of gym equipment. Grande then used Nicki Minaj’s verse on the track to transition into their song with Jessie J, ‘Bang Bang’. ‘Greedy’, ‘Focus’ and ‘I Don’t Care’ followed next.
One of my personal favourite moments from the show was ‘Moonlight’. The dreamy synthesised track saw Grande kneeling at the end of her runway giving one of the best vocal performances she gave throughout the show. Grande then played through re-imagined versions of her hit singles ‘Love Me Harder’ and ‘Break Free’. ‘Sometimes’ saw the crowd sent into a frenzy as pink balloons fell into the crowd. This was followed up by another stepped bare performance, 'Thinking Bout You’. These more visually demure moments proved to be the standout moments that really showcased Grande’s vocals.
Grande then paid tribute to fans who lost their lives at the Manchester Attack by performing the famous ‘Over The Rainbow’. Towards the end of the song you could see Grande’s raw emotion as she fought back tears.
Grande then performed, what most call her breakout single, ‘Problem’. Another one of her hits that was reimagined for the tour. Grande moved through bright blue neon poles performing a more darker version of the song. The came time for the finale, Grande’s 2016 hit single, ‘Into You’. The track saw Grande and her dancers dancing throughout the stage before she blew the crowd away with those high notes at the end of the track. Grande thanked the Sydney crowd before disappearing into the stage.
Minutes later Grande reappeared for an encore performance of ‘Dangerous Woman’. The vocal powerhouse stood elevated with her band before giving the highlight performance of the night. If there was any doubt, unlikely, of Grande’s vocal abilities, her final song blew those out the window. Grande thanked Sydney again one last time before leaving the stage while her amazing band played the performance out.
While Grande proved her vocal abilities are unparalleled in contemporary pop, the Australian tour saw a reduced staging setup to that of the international dates. This may have to do with the location, the International Convention Centre. The small venue definitely impacted the show, as well as how steep the seating was arranged. The lighting also proved problematic at times as it was sometimes so dark and dim you could barely see the pop star.
Overall, Grande delivered a stellar performance for her first ever concert in Sydney, exactly three years to the day after she made her first performance on Australian soil at The X Factor Australia in 2014.

REVIEW - IT
I’m not one for scary films so the prospect of going to the cinema to watch IT absolutely terrified me. Not having seen the original I didn’t really know what to expect. I know of Pennywise, and thanks to a variety of meme’s I know he has something to do with sewers. I also know the red balloon is another icon associated with the film. More recently I was on social media and came across people posting photo’s of red balloons popping up around Sydney, tied to rainwater grates. Made me fear the impending movie night.
So I made my way to Bondi Junction contemplating what the next few hours would bring me. There was an IT experience, (welcomed by people dressed in yellow raincoats) you had to walk through what appeared to be a sewer entrance, where you were then greeted by red light and an IT board with a bevy of red balloons. Further in, there was a virtual experience, which I didn’t even dare to try. We contemplated it for a moment and my guest was considering it. Then we saw the woman in front of us, who had just put the glasses on, jump and quickly remove the glasses saying, “no, no, nope.” She was so scared. Which made me scared thinking, this is just the virtual experience, what will the movie be like?
We were then ushered into the cinema where we sat for a few moments, the tension building. After the trailers, we were greeted with the sound of a young child singing. At that point I was ready to start humming to calm myself down, but realised I sounded just like the singing, so promptly stopped. We are introduced to two brothers Bill (Jaeden Lieberher) and Georgie (Jackson Robert Scott), who are at home whilst it’s raining outside. Bill sends his younger brother Georgie down to the basement for supplies as they’re making a paper boat. Then there’s the case of, fearing the scary dark basement. Georgie conquers that obstacle, takes the wax up to his brother where they finish the boat. We then see Georgie exit the house wearing a yellow raincoat. At that point I was thinking, this isn’t good. Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard) is introduced here, there was definitely something unsettling about the clown.
The course of the film then revolves around Bill and his friends Richie (Finn Wolfhar), Eddie (Jack Dylan Grazer) and Stanley (Wyatt Oleff). The film isn’t just about the threat of Pennywise and the way he torments the children, it’s also about other characters the children interact with. Good and bad. Along the way they make new friends, or at least unite with people they would have just passed in the hallway or street such as Beverly (Sophia Lillis), Ben (Jeremy Ray Taylor) and Mike (Chosen Jacobs). These young actors did a great job creating each character and were incredibly believable. Sophia Lillis actually reminded me of a young version of Amy Adams, there was a level of gravitas to some of her scenes. Then there came the wit and humour from Richie, Eddie, Bill and Stanley. The boys really delivered each joke, each moment and it was so fitting with the way younger children can behave. The audience really responded well to this. As the characters and actors worked well off each other, creating a great dynamic throughout the film.
Pennywise himself yes, had a major creepy factor about him, but for the most part I think the special effects and stunts seemed unrealistic. For me, that’s what let the film down. The parts where you should have been terrified, I found myself focusing on the thought that Pennywise was probably attached to a harness and wires to create a jump like that. I think perhaps his movements seemed too rehearsed or too precise for that matter. For example when he was charging towards some of the characters it seemed almost too perfect the way he was moving from left to right. I also found some situations, music and set design similar to other films. One for instance, the old derelict house featured in the middle and end, reminded me of the house from Coraline. It was even making similar sounds. Another example, at one point the music sounded very much like One Day More from Les Miserables. Again, this distracted me from the film itself. There were a couple more instances throughout the film, which to be honest may have actually helped me in evading great fear.
However I have to bring it back to the main cast of children, they really gave such great performances. I think the script helped in this instance, as each character had something unique about them. Something that added to the overall story and direction they were all heading. It was these personal stories that really helped create a solid foundation for the complete story. I liked how through their own personal stories they contributed a piece of knowledge or assistance in their attempts to defeat Pennywise. Like the breakdown of information discovered by Ben. Then we add little funny moments to break up the seriousness of the scene, we really responded as an audience. I think this helped the viewer feel almost like everything would be okay. For instance, the part where Eddie is standing up to his mother and rather than saying placebo, he says gazebo. A serious moment, where the audience is so focused on what the characters are saying and then you hear a line like that, it brings the level back down. You really start to focus on the fact that these young children are facing this evil character, their fears straight on and approaching it in a way that really makes you empathise with each character.
Coming from someone who very rarely picks a horror/thriller film you should definitely see IT in theatres. If not because you’re a fan of the original or Stephen King’s work, go and see it for the great performances from these talented young actors and the funny moments that break up the scary moments. An added bonus is the fact there’ll be a possible second film as this film ends with the title, "Chapter One".

ANSEL ELGORT, LILY JAMES & EDGAR WRIGHT BABY DRIVER PREMIERE | SYDNEY
Ansel Elgort, Lily James and Edgar Wright attend the Baby Driver premiere in Sydney. The actors and director were on hand to greet fans and media, promoting the action thriller whilst walking the red carpet at George St Event Cinemas in Sydney.
The popular actors and director were warmly greeted by fans who stood for hours to garner the chance to take a photo with the talent or ask for an autograph. One really lovely moment included The Fault in Our Stars actor Ansel Elgort.
Elgort spent quite some time working his way through media and fans in the front part of the theatre space. It came time where he had to meet his colleagues upstairs to introduce the film prior to the screening. Walking past the end section of fans whom at that point he was unable to stop and greet, he said he would be back to greet them all. Time passed and fans were questioning whether he would return, coupled by personnel who were stating he would not return. Fans remained, waiting eagerly. Then after what seemed to be 15 minutes, it happened. Ansel Elgort returned to greet the remaining group of fans.
In my 15 years of attending red carpet events, it's rare to find an actor who says they'll be back and actually do come back. More often than not the thought is said in passing, but never comes to be. It was great to see how he interacted with his fans.
Baby Driver is in cinemas now and also stars, Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Eiza González, Kevin Spacey and Sky Ferreira.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST HIGH TEA | SOFITEL HOTEL SYDNEY
We were invited to spend brunch at the Soirée lounge in the Sofitel Hotel Wentworth Sydney. However, it wasn't any ordinary high tea, it was a Beauty and the Beast themed high tea. With an assortment of treats and beautiful tea, we felt like Belle as Lumiere introduces each delectable course. The Sofitel Sydney have extended their Beauty and the Beast high tea package due to popular demand. It was an absolute treasure to explore and experience each level of the high tea. I highly recommend it. Visit www.sofitelsydney.com.au/en/beauty-and-the-beast-packages.html now to book your own Beauty and the Beast package. So relax and pull up a chair!

We were treated to an amazing night out at the movies. Not just any night at the movies, but a drive in movie night! The backdrop includes a retro style diner with an assortment of treats to fit the occasion.
If you haven't experienced a drive in movie night, make sure you do. Perfect for any occasion, date night, a night out with friends or even a family movie night. Rug up in your car, enjoy your snacks and the movie!
