Israphaellia's Adventure

Fantasy + Sci-Fi Manga (full watercolour!)

It's set in the same world as "Taylaron's Story" but a few years later, when the characters are in magical university.

It's a sequel to a comic I made as a teenager, but you don't have to read the original to understand this one.

I finished all the drop caps I need for my novel!

That's right, I went through my whole novel (Taylaron's Story) and checked exactly which letters appear at the start of my chapters because I'm lazy haha.

5 Ways to Show/Hint that Your Narrator is Unreliable Without Saying It

Unreliable narrators mislead the readers, but how do you show the reader that they can't take what the narrator says at face value, without just outright telling them?

What the narrator says is different to what we observe. Maybe things don't quite add up. Does the narrator insist that their love interest adores them? Maybe that love interest is seen avoiding eye-contact, trying to end conversations, looking behind their shoulder and walking faster when they see the narrator following them after work.

Inconsistent details. Maybe the narrator themself doesn't keep the details straight. One day they may be raving about how good they are at chess, then complaining that they didn't even pass the qualifying round for the beginner chess tournament.

Other characters disagree with them. The narrator may believe that they are speaking with ghosts, but there is literally no one in their life who can confirm the existence of them. It might be that they're special, or it could be that ghosts don't really exist.

There's a reason we might not want to trust them. Maybe they're on drugs, in a position to be biased, or just insecure. If our narrator was on a drug binge when they witnessed a crime scene, maybe we'd be less inclined to believe their memory than of a sober witness.

Biased language. The narrator may be overly attached to their version of events. If the narrator is a sportsperson, they may describe the opposing team in very biased terms (losers, cheaters), and we may not be able to trust their judgement because of the bias.

You don't have to use all (or any) of these points, but I hope this gives you something to think about. Do you have any other ideas on how to show that a narrator is unreliable?

The Safekeep (Book Review, Historical WLW Romance)

Genre: Literary fiction, Historical, Romance, LGBT+

Summary (spoiler-free):

The Safekeep is a 2024 novel written by the Yael van der Wouden. It is set in the 1960s in the Netherlands.

Isabel is unfriendly and reclusive, living in a family home that is set to go to her brother Louis. When Louis has to go away for work, his girlfriend Eva moves in to stay in the house with Isabel for the summer.

Isabel dislikes Eva at first, but as they spend time together, something more develops...

My Rating: ★★★★★

Review (spoiler-free):

The novel starts out a little slow, but once it gets going, it's gripping. I was able to appreciate the slow beginning when I got to the end of the novel, and I even went back to re-read some of the opening chapters for any details I missed.

The main character is somewhat unlikeable, but that was a bonus for me. I love reading novels featuring complete weirdos, whether they're anti-social or just deranged (this character was both).

I loved the historical themes here and the descriptions of the character's experiences with WWII.

I also liked the romance in this novel. I always feel like romance novels aren't long enough to let the romance develop in a way that feels realistic and not rushed for me, but here I felt like it made sense. It might be the best romance I have read so far, or at least up there.

Not that it's necessarily a healthy romance - it's a bit of a mess. It's sudden, passionate, and chaotic, but that dynamic kept me intrigued.

I also found it interesting that this book didn't shy away from descriptions of sex. Sex is a common theme to explore in literary fiction, but I have never read such detailed descriptions of it and so many scenes in one book. It does show that you can have lots of sex in a novel while still having it stay very "artistic". I haven't really seen anything like that before, and it kinda blew my mind.

The sex scenes are definitely something to be mindful of it that makes you uncomfortable - they just kept going at it! The middle of the book was basically just sex with short intermissions in between. I thought it added to the passionate aspect of their relationship, so I had no issues with the amount, but it's good to know about if you plan on reading this novel.

I definitely recommend reading this book!

Nearing the end of the novel, Isabel reads Eva's diary, and we get to find out the truth about the house and why she was stealing the cutlery. There is a section which is just Eva's diary. I thought that was great, and I really liked having that peek into her life.

Idol, Burning (Book Review)

Summary (spoiler-free):

Idol, burning is a Japanese novella written by Rin Usami and translated by Asa Yoneda.

It follows a highschool student who is obsessed with a J-pop idol, Masaki Ueno. He is her "backbone" in life, and she feels unable to live life without the motivation of being devoted to him.

Everything starts going downhill after an incident that gets Masaki Ueno "cancelled" on social media.

My Rating: ★★★★★

Review (spoiler-free):

Idol, burning was a breeze to read. Being a novella, it isn't very long, and the prose was easy to comprehend. I finished it in a couple of days.

The novella is written from a first-person POV so we have direct access to the main characters (Akari's) internal experience. I loved the descriptions in this novel, which were vivid whether I was reading a mundane every-day scene or the almost religious experiences of idol-worship.

I also liked the exploration of Akari's struggles with everyday life and how her one-way "relationship" with Masaki fits in with that.

The concept felt very unique to me (though I don't read many Japanese novels, so for all I know this concept could have been explored in other Japanese novels that I simply don't know about).

I did feel like there could have been more to the story, but having a simpler storyline is expected for a novella.

I liked that the incident where Masaki punches someone remains vague at the end. We don't know for sure exactly what happened or who he had punched. That was very fitting, considering we are viewing the world through a fan's perspective, and fans may not have access to all the information.

At least Aira has Zmezaliy to confide in, her (singular) human friend. He has a childhood friend of his own that he lost contact with during the war, and he’s determined to find her. Issue is, he doesn't even know what planet she's on.

Can Aira stop Boqirin from destroying the economy, help Zmezaliy with his search, all while keeping Oer safe from a mystery enemy?

Writing Tip - do you have writer's block?

There are many "causes" for what people call writer's block, so there is no single "solution".

So my tip is specifically for the type of writer's block you get when you feel like your writing isn't to your standard, and that perfectionism is stopping you from writing. After finishing my latest draft, I wanted to start another novel, but I kept getting stuck because it didn't feel like my writing was any good.

But I've discovered something that can help!

Try writing a "fanfiction" of your own work! It can be for your current draft, or for an old draft you've finished long ago.

What do I mean by fanfiction? I mean something "non-canon", maybe some rediculous scenario or something that doesn't necessarily add to the original story. It can be a whole thing on its own. Since it's not "canon" to your story, there's no pressure to make it good.

I've found since there's no pressure to write "well", the writing flows more easily. It has also helped me explore relationships between characters and develop my ideas about the world further.
