some people seem to think aotearoa new zealand is just fields and hills and grass. maybe some mountains. maybe a fjord or two. which is so fascinating to me because we have so many different biomes and landscapes it's bonkers.
we have massive volcanic fields. we have native palm trees and mangroves up north. we have huge swaths of geothermal areas that have geysers and bubbling hot mud and multicoloured pools. we have dense temperate rainforests. we have fern trees that grow ridiculously tall. we have huge tussock grasslands. we have a freezing cold desert. we have huge black sand beaches. we have sand dunes that stretch for kilometres. I love you aotearoa. this isn't even all of it these are just a few examples man
it's ridiculously beautiful and varied over here and yet when you say "new zealand", a lot of people imagine grass fields and sheep. which to be fair. we do also have. BUT STILL
long story short: it's not all fields and sheep. p.s. yes those are people at the top of the sand dune in the last photo

#I have a suspicion that a lot of people think aotearoa is a lot smaller than it actually is #I think there's a tendency especially for europeans and east-coast americans to think of it as 'a small island off of australia' #which like #it's small compared to australia #but most countries are small compared to australia #aotearoa has a greater area than the entire united kingdom #it also spans about 15° of latitude #which is 50% more than england #and also more than any US state except Alaska
"off of australia" is also a bit misleading; the distance looks small on a map, but that's because your brain is comparing it to the entire pacific ocean on the other side.
sydney (eastern coast of australia) to auckland (nz north island) is a three hour plane flight.
EXACTLY!!!!! we stretch from florida to new york if you put aotearoa on a map of the US. it's like saying "japan is a small island off the coast of china" to me
BIG!
Saw a post about Stratt and Grace getting married so he couldn’t testify against her in court and I believe the interaction goes something like as follows:
“Grace, I need your signature.”
Grace looked up from his work in his closet of an office. Stratt closed the door behind her.
“An autograph? I’m flattered.”
She pushed the work off his already disheveled desk and set a single paper on top. It kind of looked like his degree, it kind of looked like-
“A marriage license? Well, now I’m really flattered.”
“For legal reasons. Just sign.” Stratt muttered.
“Are you serious?”
Of course she was serious. She only was serious. But she seemed…uncomfortable? The feeling looked strange on her. Eyes dart between the paper and him. Arms crossed over her chest as if hugging herself. It was definitely a new look. They were in new territory.
“I’m not the marrying type.” said Grace. “And I think I forgot to propose.”
Stratt breathed in deeply. Steeling herself.
“Grace,” Her hands were fidgeting with the cuff of her sleeve. “What I’m doing here is illegal. I’ve broken alot of rules to give the crew a chance to save us. But once the mission begins…the world order will need to go back to how it was.”
Grace listened intently trying to make eye contact with her glassy gaze. He hadn’t thought to much about the legality of it all. After all, that was her job.
“I will be put on trial. I will be found guilty. I will serve the rest of my life behind bars. That is my cost.” Stratt continued, “You, the team, will all be fine. But-”
She pushed the license closer to Grace.
“Spouses don’t testify in court.”
Finally she looked at him. She wasn’t telling him to sign. If that was the case she probably would’ve just forged his signature. Hell, she probably has a whole team just for that purpose. She was asking him.
His choice. Just between the two of them.
“We don’t have to sleep together, right?”
Her eyes went big. “God Grace! No! Just sign the damn paper!” she huffed.
He smiled. And put his name under hers.
Husband and wife.
Well, more like “Most powerful person in the world” and “Some guy she kept around.” But still. Till death do they part.

We've talked about Grace's rainbow symbolism in this scene, but I haven't seen anyone pointing out the detail of Stratt having a line of countries' flags behind her on her first appearance
You are given a short-lived curse in which you have a song stuck in your head for a week. On the bright side, you get to pick the song. Which do you choose?
American Pie (Don Mclean)
Bad Romance (Lady Gaga)
Cotton Eye Joe (Rednex)
Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen)
Dancing Queen (ABBA)
Happy (Pharrell Williams)
Hot n Cold (Katy Perry)
Single Ladies (Beyonce)
Take Me Home Country Roads (John Denver)
Wannabe (Spice Girls)
We Didn’t Start The Fire (Billy Joel)
9 to 5 (Dolly Parton)
Joke’s on me I’ve had every one of these stuck in my head for at least a week at some point in my life.
Me: *head full of fantasies of dying like a martyr*
God: Dying is easy, young man, living is harder.
Mood. Also:
Me: To sacrifice yourself, your life, to mae a gift of yourself, is such a lovely concept—
Life: It's your turn to do the dishwasher.
Me: Not like that

@kewti-est UNEXPECTED ADDITION TO THE PLAYLIST MAYHAPS???
this feels offensively accurate
Grace is a teacher. He knew about all the memes and he enjoyed making jokes and being funny. I can only imagine that when he sent the beatles back he had a video labeled watch first and it's just a Rick roll and then they move to the video labeled watch second and he starts talking and they're like ok finally information and then he's like we saved the planet celebration time and they just hear never gonna give you up playing in the background while he's explaining about taumeoba. The first one was all him, the second however was rockys doing. Stratt is by far the most amused by this everyone else is questioning why they sent grace on this mission.
People pretend that seeing the bad things in life is the smarter, more clear-eyed position, but really, people who refuse to notice the good things are just as blind as the people who refuse to notice the bad things, plus they're more miserable.
Cynicism masquerades as wisdom, but it is the farthest thing from it. Because cynics don’t learn anything. Because cynicism is a self-imposed blindness, a rejection of the world because we are afraid it will hurt us or disappoint us. Cynics always say no. But saying yes begins things. Saying yes is how things grow. Saying yes leads to knowledge. Yes is for young people. So for as long as you have the strength to, say yes.

It’s not lost on me how Jason is the only Robin to come from a life of poverty and crime, and is treated like a fundamentally broken monster in many comic books, given even less grace than Damian. “Something is not right with that boy” FUCK YOU DC. He was twelve years old. Him being slightly agressive because he knew, better than Batman or Nightwing or Barbara, how rotten Gotham was because he GREW UP in that environment did not make him evil or broken.
He just wanted to help people.
I was talking to my husband the other day and, as a random example of a boring topic that nobody at a party would want to hear about, I happened to come up with, “The history of wheelbarrows.”
But then my husband and I got curious and decided to look up the history of wheelbarrows, and we both thought it was surprisingly interesting.
The very next day, we were visiting a thrift store with family and my sister spotted a toy wheelbarrow for her son, and my husband said, “Did you know that Jesus was older than wheelbarrows? They weren’t invented until around 100 CE.”
This is why curious people are my favorite type of people. No topic is really that boring when you look into it. And everything is more interesting when you talk about it with someone you love.
Sorry but it's not complete without...
I just learned that they filmed PHM in order, and I am weirdly excited about it. One of the things that frustrates me most about filmed mediums, specifically, is that it's SO much more difficult for actors to be in character, locked in, when they haven't experienced something yet. It also allows for less improvisation (something they held in high esteem for PHM and is yet another thing I love about this film) due to continuity problems. Filming it in order also meant that Ryan Gosling had already spent weeks filming alone before Rocky showed up, which he himself said in an interview made it so much easier to embody Ryland. "By the time Rocky shows up, I genuinely need a friend." Direct quote!!! The fact that James Ortiz and his team were in sync enough with the Rocky puppet to do improv, so much so that Ryan didn't feel like he was acting with a puppet. The fact that Gosling selected this film specifically, asked Chris and Phil to direct, and then committed SO HARD to the character. He was SO involved in making this movie and it shows! I thought I was over it but I am not. Film of the decade for me guys.
did. did you know that narnia also did this
@aroace-kyryll-flins OUR HYPERFIXATIONS ARE MERGING
@thekingofthenameless of course. I obviously watched The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe commentary on DVD. Of course I did. And, to inform the audience (who may not know), the director specifically got all three children EXCEPT FOR SKANDAR (Edmund) together a few weeks before filming to get to know each other and get some acting training (? I do not remember the details). But his main goal was to make Edmund feel separate and uncomfortable from the other characters. And he nailed it.
