🐾 Proper and regular follow-up is as important as the first visit. 🐾 Many times vets don't start the complete treatment from the first visit. In a few cases, specially dermatology cases, regular follow-up is needed to assess the improvement and to adjust the medication and dosage accordingly. 🐾 The vet will need to see how your pet is responding to the prescribed medication to decide the further treatment plan. 🐾 It is always advised to go for a follow-up 2-3 days before your medication gets over, so that your vet can let you know if the medication needs to continue or can be stopped (without any gap in the medication administration). 🐾 Follow-up is most important in post-op cases where regular dressing change is needed and the progress and healing needs to be monitored. 🐾 We may think a minor delay isn't important, but in some cases, even a 1 day delay can lead to a huge setback in the progress made so far (specially in case of wounds and dermatology cases). 🐾 If for some reason, there's a delay in thee vet visit, take pictures and videos wherever possible. 🐾 Don't neglect or postpone your visit just because your pet is reacting well to the medication and seems to be back to normal. 🐾 Weight gain post castration/spay is a very controversial topic but let's give it a shot. 🐾 The energy requirements of pets are different at different stages of life. So once you spay or castrate your pet, you will need to adjust their diet and exercise. 🐾 Your pet's energy requirements reduce once the effect of sex hormones fades away. This leads to a reduction in their metabolic rate. If there are no changes made to their lifestyle post the neuter, it leads to weight gain and obesity. 🐾 If you are getting your pet neutered, you will need to discuss the changes that have to be made in your pets life. 🐾 The first thing you'll need to do is change their diet. There are various specialised diets available for neutered pets. If these diets are unavailable or not possible for some reason, you can always make adjustments in the portion of food being given to your pet. 🐾 Another thing that helps is providing proper exercise. 🐾 Grain free diets have NO SCIENTIFIC BACKING. Years ago the pet food industry began capitalizing on the movement in human diets of transitioning to gluten and grain free, without actually making sure (through research) that pets either needed to or physically COULD go grain free safely.⁣ 🐾 Dogs (and cats!) NEED grains in their diets. Full stop. A pet’s diet is not adequately balanced without grains, and if we want to talk about dogs “in the wild” being carnivores (your Shih Tzu’s ancestors were not wolves but that’s another topic), wild dogs DO eat grains. They come from their prey’s stomach contents mainly, most of which are herbivores, and is one of the first things they eat when hunting prey. ⁣ 🐾 Grain allergies are RARE in dogs and cats. Not saying impossible, I’m just saying without a diagnosed grain allergy, your pet needs grain in their diet. The most common allergens in dog’s diet’s are the protein source, and regularly chicken or beef. ⁣ ⁣🐾 “But my pet loves their grain free diet, and they seem to be just fine. What harm could be done by continuing to feed it?” The detrimental effect scientifically proven in long term use of grain free diets (and boutique or exotic protein diets) is something called Diet Related Dilated Cardiomyopathy. Diet related DCM means as a direct result of a grain free diet, your pup’s heart get’s abnormally enlarged and ends up resulting in Congestive Heart Failure. And failure *usually* = death. ⁣🐾 Now here is what we DON’T know. We have yet to identify the exact “why.” In 2019 the FDA released the results of their diet study which showed 90% of diet related DCM cases had been fed a grain free diet, and 93% of the diets fed had peas, legumes, and potatoes as the main ingredients listed. 🐾 It's so easy to give in to those puppy dog eyes every time your pooch begs for some table scraps or treats. 🐾 One thing to remember is, getting angry, scolding or punishing him/her is not the solution and will not help in any way. 🐾 The best way to prevent this is by giving behaviour or obedience training to your little one. 🐾 Train him/her to follow basic commands like 'no', 'leave it', 'stay', etc. This way, whenever he or she asks you for food or picks some scraps off the floor, your command will prevent him/her from eating it or asking for more. 🐾 Whatever the case, do not give in to those eyes and barks. That will reinstate their belief that the begging behaviour will work for them. 🐾 Make it a point to never feed him/her anywhere other than their own corner. This includes treats too. Do not offer them treats/food from the table, kitchen, couch, etc. All food or treats should be given on a fixed area (the pet zone of your house). 🐾 You can start feeding your pooch around the same time that you eat food. Change his/her food timings to match yours or feed him/her just before your lunch/dinner time. 🐾 Another technique is to distract them with their favourite toys or puzzle toys with a hidden treat in it or maybe a yak bone. Anything to keep them busy and occupied. 🐾 One last tip which may work but is a little extreme is to keep them in a different room when you eat or to keep them tied. 🐾 Remember, if you give in even once, it'll give them the confidence to continue begging in the future. . 🐾 Many first time parents don't realise their cat is in heat or what signs to look out for. 🐾 There have been times when I got panicked calls from first time cat parents about their cat's weird behaviour. 🐾 Cats can start going into heat as early as 4 months of age, but it usually starts around 6 months of age (varies from cat to cat) 🐾 Cats have their heat cycle all year round unlike dogs, specially in tropical places. 🐾 An average heat lasts around 5-7 days and the cat can come back to heat in a couple of weeks. 🐾 SIGNS- • Your cat may become more affectionate. • She'll rub herself against you and ask for more attention. • She may become more vocal. • She'll start rolling around on the floor. • The posture will change, with her sitting with her back side raised and the tail moved to a side, to expose herself for the male cats. • Male and female cats will start urinating around the house. Many of you asked me to do a post on this so here it is. 🐾 It’s definitely true that not all breeds are made to survive in all conditions (climatic). 🐾 Siberian Husky, St Bernard, Alaskan malamute, Chow Chow, Afghan Hound are a few amongst many many such breeds. 🐾 Sadly, many people who “own” these breeds, bought them as a status symbol or because it’s a fancy and exotic breed. 🐾 INDIAN SUMMERS: These breeds are meant to live in proper cold environments where their double coat provides them a good protection. If these breeds are forced to stay in places which have hot summers (upto 40-45°), which most Indian cities do, it is not just wrong but also cruel abd inhumane. 🐾 Luckily, most of the dog breeds adapt pretty fast. But as a responsible pet parent, there are a few things you should keep in mind. 🐾 AC ROOMS: If you can afford to buy one of these breeds, you should be able to afford an ac too. Specially during summers, they need to be kept in an ac room to keep them from getting heat stroke/stress. 🐾 SHAVING THEM COMPLETELY IS NOT A SOLUTION AND WILL ONLY HARM THEM FURTHER. 🐾 You will also need to adjust their walk timings according to the weather. 🐾 WINTERS: They can tolerate winters pretty well and do not need sweaters or jackets. 🐾EXERCISE: It is important to remember that most of these breeds are meant to stay active and need proper exercise (taking them for 1-2 walks does not count) and should be made to run around properly. 🐾 BE A RESPONSIBLE PARENT. If you cannot provide them a comfortable environment and good exercise, do not buy them. 🐾 DON’T MAKE YOUR PET SUFFER TO SATISFY YOUR WHIMS ABD FANCIES. . HOW TO STOP YOUR DOG EATING THINGS THEY'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO: Is your pup a scavenger for all things food and not-food? Here's a few tips to help avoid a foreign object becoming lodged in your pet's intestines (resulting in surgery 😷) 1. Train them from a young age to only chew things that are appropriate. Have plenty of safe dog toys on hand and if your pup starts chewing foreign objects (sticks, socks, rocks etc), immediately stop the behaviour and divert their attention to toys instead. ⚽️ 2. Teach them to eat on command. Have them wait for their dinner and not eat until a command is given to help prevent ingestion of things like baits, wildlife, animal poo, and other exotic doggy-snacks. 🍖 3. Remove access to unsuitable materials, especially for puppies. Puppies will chew everything in sight for the first 6 months or so while they are teething, so manage this risk as much as possible by checking your house and yard for any dangers. 🐶 4. Invest in a behaviourist, especially for adult dogs that can't shake the scavenging habit. There may be a reason e.g. boredom or under-stimulation that they are more inclined to seek out treats to chew. 🤷‍♀️ 5. If your pet is especially high risk and cheeky, you can use a basket muzzle which still allows them to drink but prevents swallowing of larger objects. 🐾 Some of the most common obstructions we see are chunks of bone, toys that are too small or breakable, nuts and seeds (nectarines seeds, whole macadamias), rope and string. . . . This is something I got asked quite a few times just this week. So what better way to explain it than making a post here. 🐾 Some breeds are more prone to snoring than other breeds (brachycephalic breeds). 🐾 What are brachycephalic breeds? It mainly refers to the shape of the skull. These breeds have a much smaller and sometimes broader skull compared to other breeds. This reduces the space for their normal airways and leads to higher chances of snoring and other respiratory issues. 🐾 This includes breeds like pug, shihtzu, boxer, bulldog, chowchow, pekingese among other breeds. 🐾 For such breeds, snoring may be a normal phenomenon if it's something you've always noticed in them. 🐾 Snoring can also be noticed if your dog is sleeping on his back or in a different position. In such cases, you may try changing his position slightly and this should resolve the issue. 🐾 Some old dogs also tend to snore a little when they sleep in a certain position. 🐾 If the snoring is a new and sudden development which you have never noticed before, you may want to talk to your vet about it. 🐾 Obesity is another reason for your dog to start snoring. 🐾 If your dog is suddenly snoring, try and observe other signs too. Like his/her breathing/respiration, the activity level, any sneezing or coughing, any exercise intolerance, etc. Your vet will want to know all these things at the time of examination. 🐾 To diagnose the cause of the snoring, your vet may conduct a few common tests like blood tests (including thyroid), ECG, x-ray, etc. 🐾 Remember, choke chains and too much pulling on the collar can also cause issues like tracheal collapse. 🐾 The tick season is back again and with it, so are the cases of tick fever. 🐾 This post is more about prevention of ticks than about tick fever (will be discussed in a later post). 🐾 Many owners get really flustered when they see ticks on their pets. It's more to do with the way a tick makes you feel (that weird feeling of seeing a tick crawl) than how the tick effects the pet. 🐾 If your pet has a bad tick infestation, there's every chance you've noticed ticks crawling on your walls or bed too (yes it definitely is creepy) 🐾 Many owners opt for drastic measures like shaving the pet down completely. THIS DOESN'T REALLY HELP. It may help you see the ticks better, but it in no way increases the effectiveness of any of the medication. 🐾 There are many options available to treat as well as prevent ticks. 🐾 TABLETS: right now there is only one tablet available in India but it is extremely effective and a single dose works for upto 3 months. This not only prevents ticks but also takes care of all the ticks your pet may have. 🐾 SPOT-ONS: there are various options and compositions available in the market. You can talk to your vet to find the most suitable option for your pet. The effect of the spot-on lasts for a month. Most spot-ons (in my experience) are better are preventing ticks than treating them (specially in heavy infestations). 🐾 COLLARS: collars work for upto 4-5 months as long as they don't get wet when you bathe your dog. 🐾 TOPICAL SOLUTIONS: solutions like amitraz (have to be used only if your vet advices it, and at the recommended concentration only) are effective to treat tick infestations but can be a hassle. These solutions are also good to take care of the ticks around your house. 🐾 It is important to remember that all these options have to be repeated regularly (based on their efficacy period) for best results. . Being a first time puppy parent can be scary. But if you know what to do, it gets easy and fun. 🐾 Most important thing to remember, do not get a pup less than 45 days old. Their immunity will not be well developed and they'll be more prone to infections and diseases if separated from the mother at an early age. 🐾 I generally advice ny clients not to bring the pup to the clinic immediately. Let him/her settle into the new house first to reduce stress. 🐾 Once your pup has adjusted in the new home, take him to the vet to get him dewormed and then start the vaccines after 1-2 days (it is spaced out to reduce stress). 🐾 Till your pup is completely vaccinated (till he/she is about 4 months old), don't take him/her out for walks (avoid contact with unvaccinated dogs or areas where unvaccinated dogs are present at anytime of the day). 🐾 Give your pup dry baths and wipe downs instead of giving baths to keep them from getting scared or stressed. 🐾 Remember, stress can further reduce your pup's immunity and make him/her more prone to infections and diseases. 🐾 If your pup vomits or has any loose motions, take him to the vet immediately. Do not wait. 🐾 I am personally not a big fan of crate training (to each their own) but it is a good idea to start basic training for your pup at home rather than waiting for his/her professional training to start. 🐾 Do not change your pup's food suddenly. It can cause a tummy upset. I had another post planned for today but I just couldn't go ahead with it. I had to post this instead and discuss this because of certain recent events. ✨ I cannot emphasize enough on the importance of mental health. We all have good days and bad. But it is important to understand and recognise the signs of depression as compared to a one off bad day. ✨ There is absolutely nothing wrong in asking for help or talking about it. ✨ While it is important to ask for help, it is just as important to be there for others who need it. It can be something as simple as not judging or belittling someone. You don't know what effect your words or support can have on a person. ✨ Having said this, I want to talk a little about depression in veterinarians as it is personal for me. ✨ According to studies and research, veterinarians have the highest rate (around 3.5x more than the general population) of suicide and depression (women more than males). ✨ Most of us join this profession to help animals and to put our love for animals to good use. But what our education doesn't teach us is the toll this profession takes on us. We can't save them all. Treatment and surgeries are expensive and many owners don't account for these expenses when they buy/adopt a pet. They end up opting for euthanasia or let the pet die through the natural course. This is very emotionally draining for vets. ✨ We also have to go through a hoard of insults and bad online reviews because we cannot offer our services at a lower rate (we have our own bills to pay and expenses to meet). Many owners refuse important tests and blame vets for "pushing unnecessary tests" on them just to make money. ✨ We also get a lot of backlash when a case dies. Owners don't realise that many factors have a play in this and it's not always the vet's fault. Sometimes owners don't recognise the signs early on and it's too late by the time the pet is brought in, or important tests are refused and this delays proper diagnosis. ✨ I am finally at a place where I can openly talk about my depression and am here to help and talk to anyone who needs help and support. Even with 24/7 emergency care, 2 out of 10 parvo cases die. 🐾Parvo is a very expensive, time-consuming and life threatening disease. 🐾Parvo is a viral infection that mostly affects only pups and kittens. It is rarely ever seen in adult dogs or a pet older than 8-9 months. 🐾This particular viral infection mainly affects the gastrointestinal tract but certain strains of the virus can affect the cardiac system and this is the more dangerous strain. 🐾The infected pet takes about 2-4 days to show symptoms (in most cases). 🐾An affected pet shows symptoms like weakness, loss of appetite, vomitings, nausea, loose motions (mostly blood motions), etc. The vomitings and loose motions cause dehydration which is the main cause for complications. 🐾The pet can also get secondary bacterial infections because of a weakened immune system. 🐾In the cardiac form, the pet may have shortness of breath among other symptoms. 🐾 Untreated cases have a death rate of upto 91%. 🐾Parvo is best treated on an inpatient basis by admitting the pet in the clinic for regular fluid administration and treatment. 🐾 Treatment includes anti-nausea and anti emetics (for vomitings), anti diarrhoea meds, antibiotics and IV fluids. 🐾Parvo may cause a reduction in the blood count and some cases can need blood transfusion. 🐾The most important thing to remember is, this virus is highly contagious and resilient. It can survive for upto 1 year in feces and soil and it can survive extremely high and low temperatures. NEVER SHAVEDOWN YOUR HUSKY. 1. Double coat: A husky's double coat acts as insulation from the cold and the heat. This is absolutely necessary for the husky to maintain proper insulation and body temperature. 2. Skin cancer: Dogs do not have skin pigmentation. Direct exposure of the husky's skin to sunlight can lead to skin cancer. 3. Sweating: Dogs don't sweat to lose heat. Shaving the husky's hair will not help it maintain the body temperature. They lose heat through panting and losing heat through their paws. 4. Post Shavedown hair: Once you shave your husky's hair, it will never regrow the same. The top and bottom coat will never look the same post a shavedown. 5. Hairfall and allergies: If you are worried about your husky shedding too much or being allergic to his hair, a shavedown WILL NOT HELP. The hairfall or the allergy (which is because of dander on hair and not the hair itself) is more because of underlying causes like a bad diet or an infection. It doesn't take much to cause toxicity in a small pet. 🐾 Hard liquors in particular can cause toxicity in small quantities too. 🐾 Most beers use something called hops. This is what causes more of an intoxication in pets. 🐾 Alcohol can affect the central nervous system of dogs, just like in humans. 🐾 It can cause vomitings, incoordination, drooling, panting, increased heart rate, hypoglycemia, etc. 🐾 It can also lead to organ failure if it crosses the tolerable levels. 🐾 Remember, it isn't just the type of alcohol that matters. It is also your pet's size and weight that plays a role. 🐾 If you want to give your pet something to drink, there are many alcohol free beers available for pets. 🐾 Do not give human alternatives as they may contain artificial sweeteners which can cause more harm. 🐾 If your pet drinks alcohol, contact your vet immediately. . 🐾 Raw diets are something which are very well marketed. Almost all raw diet companies try and point out that dogs are descendants of wolves and need raw diets as normal diet 🐾 What you should remember is, wolves are not domesticated. Dogs are. And generations of breeding has led to genetic adaptations to diets having meat and starch. 🐾 Dogs need a well balanced diet which the pet food industry meets. This is based on a lot of scientific research and backing. 🐾 While raw diets are becoming popularity in the recent times, there isn't enough scientific and long term data to back it up. 🐾 Raw food diets not only fail to meet the nutrient requirements of pets (calcium, phosphorus and essential vitamins); they also lead to high chances of bacterial infections like salmonellosis. 🐾 Salmonella is zoonotic and can affect humans who handle raw food too. 🐾 Recent studies have shown that most of the salmonella infections caused through raw diets are resistant to most antibiotics. 🐾 Along with this, raw diets may also include bobes which can cause internal injuries and obstruction. 🐾 If you still want to feed your pet raw diets (NOT RECOMMENDED), freeze the meat and thaw it in a microwave when you're feeding it to your pet.
