Welcome to the next round in our fest!! The theme?

Back To School!

It’s that time of year. School is back in session (good luck!). Let’s write about it. There’s so many opportunities surrounding school settings. Go wild and crazy under the bleachers, on stage, in the principal’s office. 

I D.A.R.E. you. (Get it? Or are you too young for that reference? At least the boys understand it. Drug Abuse Resistance Education. It was terrible and probably not effective.)

High School Ideas:

These are just common tropes. Write whatever comes to mind, as long as it relates to the school setting.

Sign ups are open! You have until August 31 to sign up.

Posting week: September 24 - 30. 

We will assign out posting dates mid month via email.

RULES

#1. You can sign up for one fic or multiple. It’s up to you, just make sure you have the time to complete them all by posting date. If you need to drop a fic or drop out completely, please email us. 

#2. What’s the word count? A minimum of 2,000 words per fic. There is no max word count for this round.

#3. One of the JATP characters must be the main focus. That includes side characters like Dirty Candy members, Ms. Harrison, Principal Lesser, etc. Let us know who the fic focuses on.

#4. Any rating goes. Please tag appropriately. For detailed guidelines on rating and tagging content, please see this post.

#5. Respect fan creators. Tag your work appropriately. Don’t like, don’t read. Don’t like, don’t join. And if you can’t play by the rules, sit this out.

they had lights inside their eyes

the one where Julie Molina recently has picked up some rather strange and terrifying new friends that haven’t quite figured out how to interact with people; a fact that several people at her school are about to discover against their will. 

The two boys look back at each other with unreadable expressions, and Fiona becomes certain that approaching them while on her own is a bad idea. A sort of creeping unease that she can’t quite explain makes her stop entirely, still a good few feet away from the somehow already looming figure of the blond boy. It’s then that Fiona notices the third one, standing between the other two with what she thinks is a smile. Fiona blinks.

She swears he wasn’t there when she started walking. Her eyes wander, and Fiona can’t quite figure out how to focus on the third in the bunch. It feels as if she is trying to grab onto a reflection in water rather than making eye contact with a teenager. Her skin crawls. “These are school grounds,” she finally says, her voice thin. Her heart is pounding like she’s run a marathon, a sudden wish to run making her take a step back.

And yet, she can’t figure out why. The blond boy’s face is apologetic when she looks at him again, while the brunet sends a charming smile her way. They can’t be older than eighteen. Their clothes are ill-fitting and, for two of them, a few sizes too big. They look lost; like they need help. All Fiona can think is that she really, really needs to get away from them.

“We’re looking for Julie.” The voice is boyish, a now unmistakable smile swinging in the words. There is an odd lilt to it, like an accent she has never heard before. Fiona assumes the third has spoken, even though her eyes still can’t manage to take him in. Her vision blurs, and she takes another step back.

Everyone seems to think Luke is the one Alex would crush on the second he comes out, but he’s just not Alex type. No, Alex’s type was more goofy guys with a leather fixation, who unironically listened to country music. Hearts of gold with less than bright heads. Basically, Alex’s type was Reggie Peters.

heya! i was wondering something: i know in the rules it says it has to center on a jatp character, does that mean it has to be their pov? or could we pick an outsider perspective so to speak, as long as the jatp character are still the center of the story?

Thanks for your question - it's a good one! We love the creativity of using an outsider's perspective to tell the story! Go for it! Like you said, as long as the story itself centers around a JATP character, anyone can tell that story. Happy writing!

Willie comes out to Alex and Alex finds a word that he’s been missing for all of his life so far.

“I think…” He trails off, breathes again, catches the smell of car fumes, of the food vendor nearby, of someone smoking. He doesn’t look at Willie, but lifts his head, leaning back into the bench and no longer folded over himself. The words are on his tongue. He mouths it to himself and feels it settle in his bones. It falls over his shoulders and feels right.
