I tried to give mochi a headscritch while he was on the stairs.

my stairs are basically carpet-covered slabs of wood, with no “backing” so you can see through them.  They’re also directly above the stairs that go down to the basement, so there’s a bit of a drop.

Raised fundie, can attest. A lot of these people seem normal and are some of the nicest (and well-intentioned) people you’ll ever meet. This shit is everywhere in America and really insidious; you’d be surprised. Around 25% of Americans identify as Evangelical, and most Evangelical communities (ESPECIALLY when you get into the homeschooling/Christian education circles) hit at least a couple of these points. 

You are taught that the world could end at any moment. You’re taught that everyone outside of the community is actively being deluded by Satan and you live in a constant state of fear. As Baker said, you do not have access to outside education. This is your world.

Because of this, these kids will say the most stupid, outlandish, backwards shit you’ve ever heard. You might want to lash out. But they expect people on the outside to be cruel. Prove them wrong and be kind. Try to encourage them towards outside information. They are trained to “be rational” and “look at the facts”. They are told that anyone who shows emotion has poor judgement and can’t be trusted. Use their tactics against them: If you are composed and kind, you have a shot at planting a seed.

(Look: More people getting out of the fundiegelical hellscape means less people to get married at 19 and have half a dozen kids they rigorously train to become good right-wing politician/lawyer/missionary Culture Warriors For Christ ™. Everyone benefits, here.)

Sometimes the best thing you can do is merely exist alongside them without being openly hostile. I was fourteen when I learned one of my acquaintances was gay, and suddenly gay people stopped being this nebulous Demonic Force Coming To Take Down Our Families and started being… “Hm, maybe I could ‘hate the sin, love the sinner?’

Then I moved to a larger, more “mainstream” Christian school for high school, got mostly-unmonitored internet access for a few years, and met online fandom friends from very different backgrounds. Those last two points really started the gears turning.

By the time I realized I was trans and Not Straight almost two years later, my beliefs had moved onto “Okay, we’re missing some important historical and linguistic context in the Bible for this, I don’t think it’s a sin” and I’m certain that’s what kept me from putting myself into conversion therapy or worse.

(If you’re in contact with any families like this, I’d recommend getting their kids any kind of e-reader with free 3G internet. Parents don’t suspect a thing and the kids usually find their way to unmonitored education online. Which is… hit or miss but it was instrumental in the beginnings of my own deconstruction.)

It’s possible to get out. (Hi! :D) But it is a process.
