Gentrification creates a stifling homogeneity in urban areas that makes it less suited for the everyday lives of the lower class and more suited towards the leisure and tourism of those with expendable income.
An old, decrepit laundromat gets replaced by an upscale bakery? And people are mad? Itâs not that the poor hate organic vegan cupcakes, itâs that most of us donât have a way to do laundry in our own home.
Run-down corner stores replaced by hand-made designer clothing boutiques? We donât hate your eco-fabric shawl, but I canât eat that for dinner after work like I could have a can of beans I grabbed from that corner store when I donât have time to take the bus to the real grocery store after work.
What gentrification brings in and of itself is not typically bad, itâs that gentrification brings institutions of leisure and pleasure and makes it so that the poor have to go farther out of their way for basic necessities. It turns low-income living spaces into local tourist attractions. It can even create food deserts by putting restaurants, grocery stores, etc. in that the majority of the lower class cannot afford.
Imagine if someone totally renovated your house and turned it into a mini theme park - they took away your sleeping space, where you prepare food, where you clean yourself and get ready for your day, and replaced it with things that will please people who are visiting, who have their own homes they can go back to, who are here not for their entire life but just as a distraction from their otherwise mundane existence. Itâs not that you hate theme parks, itâs not like youâve never been to a theme park and vow to never visit one again. Itâs just that you need to live! To survive! And the leisure of those who have more than you should not invalidate your existence.
I am glad this has made the rounds. Some people feel a dense misunderstanding or misinterpretation concerning gentrification, and I think it helps to hear a description/explanation of what gentrification is from those who are both affected by it and educated by the culture from which it hails. I and many others enjoy some of the delights of gentrification while simultaneously having their livelihoods threatened by it.Â
-- Ted Chiang, from "Why A.I. Isn't Going to Make Art"
I'm so glad they got Ted Chiang -- a wonderful writer of science fiction and thinker about technology, in my opinion -- to write this essay. My favorite line was this:
Generative A.I. appeals to people who think they can express themselves in a medium without actually working in that medium.
âThis is a tapestry I made myself! I just finished it!âÂ
ââŠ. this isâŠ. big.â
âEighty feet long, ten high, in forty panels! It was originally going to be sixty feet, but then the Thomas Malory Arthuriana got big and I had to put more stuff in.âÂ
â⊠Malory published in the fifteenth century.âÂ
âDo you have any idea how long it takes one person to embroider eight thousand square feet of tapestry?âÂ
âYouâve had a lot of free time in the last eight hundred years, havenât you?âÂ
âNot once I took up embroidery as a hobby, no!âÂ
âWant to see my stalagmite cultivation work?â
More Elves should be portrayed like that too.
Like, seriously, youâre telling me the elves in your story live for thousands of years, and yet their only hobby seems to be being smug assholes and running around woods with bows and arrows?
one of the hardest things to learn as a depressed former Gifted Kidâą is that half-assed is better than nothing. take the 50%, 40%, even 20% job. scrubbing your face is better than not taking a shower at all. picking up your clothes is better than never cleaning. nibbling on some bread is better than starving.
DO THINGS HALFWAY. NOW YOUâRE 100% BETTER OFF THAN YOU WERE BEFORE.
One of my college professors used to say âanything worth doing is worth doing poorly.â I didnât understand that for years because I didnât do anything poorly, I couldnât do anything poorly, I had to Do Everything Perfectly.
But brushing your teeth for 30 seconds is better than not brushing them at all when that 2 minutes seems exhausting. Doing ten minutes of yoga is better than 10 minutes of sitting when 30 minutes of cardio sounds impossible. Changing my clothes is good when a whole shower is impossible. Standing on the porch for a few minutes is worth it after being in the house for three straight days because I donât have the energy to go anywhere.
Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly⊠because doing it poorly is better than not doing it.
someone please hit me over the head with this post every day for like the next week thanks. a mention, a reblog with text, a message, something.
You must understand that perfectionism isnât striving for excellence, itâs a crippling fear of being flawed and therefore worth abandonment or punishment. Itâs a kind of psychological avoidance. Youâre avoiding fear and failure , not embracing the thing you want to do bc if it was about the thing you want to do youâd be fine with partial victory.
Growing up is actually all about realizing people donât inherently dislike you and itâs a bit odd to assume they do

there are more tweets in this thread
fucking SLAY
this isnt even the full thread, there are even MORE tweets to this thread that i think are really necessary to read if you do what op is talking about! it is not enough to know that feeling this way hurts the people you love, we already know that.
this rest of the thread continues after the third tweet from the reblog.
like THE FULL THREAD is genuinely so reassuring.
sometimes, it is not enough to just know, sometimes you might need that reassurance of "do you really think of me when i'm away?" and someone reassuring you that yeah, they do. and evaluate that! trust that! just like op did.
and then learning that ykw, it's NOT any of my business really. and finding comfort in that trust that like. whether they are or aren't thinking of me, they really do love me.
this full thread changed my life and i am ALWAYS going to give the full thread because the parts people cut out aren't enough for the people experiencing these things, speaking as someone who does. it, really it just makes us, made me, feel bad about my own capabilities when i saw the unfinished thread.
some iconic dialogue that sounds like its from the great canon of literature but are actually from memes
I will face God and walk backwards into Hell
âIâll do whatever you wantâ âthen perishâ
I have been through hell and come out singing
feel free to add more!
There are no gods here
Do I look like the kind of man who dies
Godâs dead and soon we will be too
I thought there were no heroes left in this worldÂ
âą you kneel before my throne unaware that it was built on lies
Impudent of you to assume I will meet a mortal end
This is hellâs territory and I am beholden to no gods
Bury me shallow, Iâll be back
- take this gift, for the gods surely wonât
God wishes he were me
One day, you will be face to face with whatever saw fit to let you exist in the universe, and you will have to justify the space youâve filled
Violence for Violence is the Rule of Beasts
I am a testament of your failures
You cannot kill me in a way that matters
Every last one of these matches an ego

One more joke hate: You may claim to be a woman but biologically you are a featherless biped and thus a man.
Finally a good argument for why I'm actually a man
if you told diogenes the cynic about being trans he'd be like "lol that's a sick troll you're epic" and you'd be like "diogenes no i'm serious" and he'd be like "lol that's even better lmao those guys are so mad about it" and then he'd start going by new original neopronouns every single day specifically to piss off the whole symposium
I just had an idea for a really dumb comedy sketch where a transphobe starts ranting about what really makes a women a woman, and diogenes returns each time with a different cis woman or outwardly femme intersex person that doesn't meet the criteria saying "behold, a man!"
"a woman has XX chromosomes"
*Diogenes with an androgen insensitive XY cis woman*: behold, a man!
"Nono, a woman can bear children!"
*Diogenes with someone who has medical complications associated with pregnancy*: "behold, a man!"
"nono, a woman produces the large gamete"
*Diogenes with a postmenopausal cis woman* "behold, a man!"
Trans Rights With Diogenes! coming to PBS
Some idiot: only women can produce eggs!
*Diogenes holds up a chicken* Behold! A woman!

karkat really is great. a fantastic, kind person who extends a ton of grace and works to reach out to even the most abrasive people he knows, who is considerate and has this increasingly transparent harsh personality on top of it which no one is hurt by. except when it comes to himself. who he hates. a lot.
the thing about being a homeschool abolition hardliner is that people always want to come to you with some bullshit sob story about how you hate disabled people because they were bullied for being autistic and homeschooling was so amazing for them. and it's just like well unfortunately homeschooling is also a widespread tool of coercive control in child abuse used by christofascists to raise kids without the tools they need to function in the world so that they will always be afraid, dependent, and unable to think critically and discern right from wrong and truth from lies. so unfortunately i do think this is a situation where in order to prevent enormous harm to untold numbers of children those bullied kids who just don't wanna go to school are going to have to suck it up. (and in reality what i always propose is a more robust system of alternative/magnet public schooling set up for kids who are basically on grade level but who DO struggle to thrive in a mainstream setting, but nobody ever wants to hear that, they just want to guilt you for not thinking anyone who ever gets picked on should just get to stay home and play vidya and do all their lessons on zoom. and it's like honestly i don't think you're having this argument in good faith bc you are very much centering hypothetical discomfort you MIGHT HYPOTHETICALLY have experienced over, again, widespread child abuse and neglect. so.)
so i watched the netflix documentary about piper rockelle yesterday and i would like to once again humbly suggest that homeschooling be permanently abolished and perhaps even criminalized
You learn that the homeschool lobby is literally the reason the USA is one of a single-digit number of countries that never ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and you just arenât the same since
Goddamit i hate this fucking post. I hate it because obviously if âtwelveâ followed the same pattern as the other teen numbers it wouldnât be âtwoteenâ it would be âseconteenâ. Think about it. Itâs not âthreeteenâ itâs âthirteenâ as in âthirdâ. Itâs not âfiveteenâ itâs âfifteenâ as in fifth. So with that in mind, you count âfirst, second, third, fourth, fifth,â and so on, so eleven would be âfirsteenâ and twelve would be âsecondteenâ or âseconteenâ. âFirsteen, seconteen, thirteen, fourteen, fifteenâŠ.â It just drives me absolutely mad everytime i see this post that this obvious pattern was overlooked and i cant hold in my rage anymore.
This would have had me crucified on tumblr 10 years ago but maybe we are ready for this conversation now:
If you are a socially anxious person, you have to socialize. Your panic/anxiety attacks will only get worse and trigger more frequently if you constantly avoid contact with The Public. Not saying that you need to be a social butterfly- but there is a genuine problem with not being able to order your own meal at a restaurant. And it cannot be solved by always having someone else do it for you.
This is a PSA to about 3/4s of the Portland Youth populace
everyone who reblogs this and is like "I ordered my own tea this week" or "I only barfed once when I had to give a presentation'- you are doing amazing sweetie. Have patience with yourself, you are relearning a skill so difficult that people get 4 year degrees to do it professionally.
