One issue with long term franchises that you can't explain well to annoying nerds is, they're a known market share. You are, like it or not, presumed to be buying anything that comes out from a certain franchise you like. They presume that, no matter how much you'll complain, you'll still buy into this. You're not a potential, you're expected, and as such they don't market to you. They market to the potential outliers on the grand board of media options and focus groups, and know that you'll return eventually. No amount of crying about Halo lore will save you, 'cause you'll come back anyway. Explaining this to a Marvel nerd steeped in comic book drama is redundant.
I'm a humble pirate, they were never getting my money.
