“Anxiety is your body’s response to perceived danger and mine is so strong you would have to call it a superpower.”
— Brenna Twohy, from Swallowtail
Read Debord.
Vox actually did a pretty nice article about it, and in case you were wondering what charities it is supposed to be benefiting
https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2018/10/30/18043054/ben-jerrys-political-pecan-resist
Ben and Jerry’s isn’t making an empty advertising gesture. They company has supported Bernie Sanders, and made an ice cream flavor to raise awareness of global warming. They run progressive news stories on their websites and social media. They pay their workers a living wage. Even their brownies are sourced from a company that specializes in hiring people out of jail to help them get their lives back on track. They’re open supporters of socialism. I understand the idea of “no ethical consumption” but Ben and Jerry’s isn’t just adopting a political message for nothing.
Blind cynicism will make friends look like enemies.
They are a pretty fresh company in Poland (their ice cream showed up in stores less than two years ago), but they already are very strong financial supporters of our LGBT organizations, especially in Warsaw. They were one of the sponsors of the Warsaw Pride, they also gave 6000 zł (~1600$) to two important LGBT organizations so they could renovate their shared, first real office (the organizations are Miłość nie Wyklucza, who are fighting mainly for marriage equality, and Parada Równości, organizers of Warsaw Pride), and right before the Pride this year they sponsored us a fireproof rainbow in the former spot of an art installation - a rainbow made of flowers - that was burned down seven times. Click for a short english video on the story of this rainbow!
And let me tell you, this is not good PR for them here. It would be better for them and their sales here if they didn’t openly show us any support. Their local fanpage is filled with people raging about their “leftist ideology”. But they still do, which shows they are true to the values they talk about.
Take a look through the comments and you’ll see a lot of things like this, whether it’s refusing to sell two scoops of the same flavor ice cream in Australia until citizens voted in favor of gay marriage, one of the founders showing up personally to a trans rally to hand out ice cream and hugs, or both owners getting arrested at protest rallys.
Then just normal shit like “paying their workers a living wage” and “ethically sourcing ingredients” that seem like should be bare minimums for companies but somehow isn’t.
They’re also just flat out giving money to these charities regardless of sales, the artist is one of the co-founders of CultureStrike & Presente.org (also a queer WOC), and regardless of whether you buy the ice cream the very fact that we’re talking about it and the names of the charities are visible means that the marketing campaign was successful.
I think one of the most interesting comments I’ve seen on this thread was something like: if there truly is no such thing as ethical consumption under capitalism then we also have to accept there is no such thing as ethical production. And at that point I think it makes more sense to look at both through a filter of context and intent.
They were big supporters of Amendment 4 here in Florida, the largest expansion of voting rights in the country since the Civil Rights Movement. Florida permanently banned folks with felony convictions from ever voting again, leaving roughly 1 in 10 Floridians over the age of 18 without access to the ballot box. Ben & Jerry’s didn’t just support financially—they led a statewide ice cream truck tour to help get out the vote during the final weeks of the election, educating voters on the impact of Amendment 4 passing and giving out free scoops, swag, and info sheets. Like, even when capitalism is overthrown, there’s still a place for Ben & Jerry’s in the socialist future, I hope.

I can’t get over this cat on a watermelon
even spicier take: “non-binary” means a thousand different things to a thousand different people and therefore anyone of any sexuality could theoretically be attracted to a non-binary person in some capacity, so if you’re gay and someone you’re attracted to says, “i’m non-binary,” you don’t actually have to redefine your entire identity, you can just drink a cup of sleepytime tea and go right on being gay and into non-binary people.
From Rudy Francisco’s book, HELIUM.
“the gay community was never racist”
shit y’all still are to this day
I’m glad my post got around.. ppl need to see some history
In 1984, both African American and Asian American groups fought discriminatory door policies at bars across the city. Henry Chappell reported a double-carding incident at theWatering Hole on Folsom. Wearing a dress, heels, and a shawl, Chappell, an African-American self-identified transvestite, was asked for two forms of picture IDs as a means of excluding him from attendance. BWMT hoped that San Francisco would adopt a regulatory model for admittance based on Atlanta’s carding ordinance, which mandated that no bar could demand more than one valid ID per person.3 In part due to pressure from such actions, the City eventually passed a similar ordinance.
Around the same time, the Asian Lesbian and Gay Alliance (ALGA) conducted an informal study of various S.F. gay bars. One of the organizers later recalled, “White guys could sail through with no restrictions, but once color was added to the mix, the barriers went up.” The Midnight Sun and Castro Station were Castro bars particularly notable for their anti-Asian discriminatory practices. When confronted, the owners rationalized their multiple ID policies by claiming that it was difficult to visually discern Asian men’s age.ALGA picketed the Midnight Sun, attracting media coverage with placards such as“Discrimination in the Gay Community Demeans Us All.” During a KPFA radio debate, one participant recalled a bar owner claiming, “Your people don’t drink,” and “It’s a cruise bar; we would lose other clientele because they don’t want to cruise your type.”

@why-animals-do-the-thing ??? Is this safe???
For the duration of a photo shoot, sure. It looks like the helmet just sits on the guinea pig’s head without being secured, and would fall off if it moved quickly. It might be minority stressful for the animal, but if it’s a well socialized guinea pig that’s used to handling and novel stimulus, I don’t think it would be so stressful (for a short duration of wear time) that it’s a welfare concern.
The thing I would say is most important for this situation is to make sure it doesn’t have any chance to chew on the piece, since ingesting bits of plastic filament would be really bad for the pig.
This has been edited to reflect the fact that I apparently can’t identify guinea pigs when I can’t see their skull shape - my original statement that it was a hamster was incorrect.
this wins over other pro-gay commercials because you had no idea he was gay and then you can’t tell which one is his husband
they are showing them as people
not as gays and straights
fuckin love this commercial
can we just talk abotu the fact that the husbands arent even bringing the drinks over theyre just standing there next to the drinks and chatting
fuckin useless husbands
they are showing anyone can be useless. Even gay people
they are saying that it doesn’t matter if you are gay or straight. You can still be a useless person
this post got better
There needs to be a phrase for “I acknowledge your apology and appreciate it but it does not make things better.” instead of just saying “It’s okay.” all the time.
I recognize the council has made an apology, but given that it is a stupid ass apology, I have elected to ignore it.
thank you director fury
The Lesbrary Amazon Storefront
The Lesbrary now has an Amazon storefront! I’m going through my Recommendation Master List and adding them all into the storefront, so if you like to browse by cover, you can check out all my favourites there! If you hover over each cover, you’ll see about a sentence of why I recommend each book, and a bitly link to the review. (You won’t be able to click on it, unfortunately, so you’ll have to type it in. Or, of course, you can check out the Master List.)
So far I have all the sapphic books that I’ve rated 5 stars in a list, as well as the genres Historical Fiction, Mystery/Thrillers, and Literary Fiction, but I will add all the genre categories soon.
If you buy anything through the storefront, I will get a small percentage of the sale.

hot take: hrt, gender therapy and trans surgeries should be free
if cis people don’t have to pay to have a body that doesn’t make them dysphoric, neither should trans people
So by that logic does that mean that I should get anti-depressants and all the other pills for my mental issues for free because the people who don’t suffer from them don’t have to pay to have them?
And does that mean that corrective lenses should also be free, because people with good vision don’t need to pay to see clearly, and that devices to aid in mobility for people with limited mobility (from crutches to (practical) canes to wheelchairs to prosthetics) should also be free, because people who don’t have limited mobility don’t need to pay for them?
yes? why does everyone in the notes keep trying to come up with gotchas lmao everything to do with healthcare should be free
Then by that logic, healthy food and clean water should be free because without food and water we will die. Also, without water, hygiene will be minimal therefore increasing the chances of disease.
Yes. People should have access to a healthy happy life and the whole point of a society is to support eachother and work together. how brainwashed by capitalism are you to think food and water shouldn’t be free in an ideal world.
this post is such a wild ride every time. ‘so by this logic, people should have free access to the things they need to live and survive?????????’ like yes bitch, all of it !!!
i don’t want to achieve equality by sinking to men’s level, i want them to get on ours! why should i have to unlearn the conversational art of waiting my turn, unlearn sexual self-restraint, unlearn trust in others’ good intentions, unlearn the impulse to cater to others’ needs, just to have a chance at success among savages? why can’t the men learn some fucking manners so we can all conduct our affairs in a civilized manner? i shouldn’t have to stop saying sorry, you say sorry!
In the 80s when I was in my freshman year in college, they still had entirely separate mens and women’s dorms. I was in class waiting for a final to start and one of the guys was telling someone about how he had had to go into a women’s dorm to drop something off, and he was startled to see posters on the walls, flowers, curtains, etc. He said his men’s dorm had holes in the walls, things on fire, fights, guys walking around with open wounds and he just didn’t understand why they had to live like this. He said, “I want to live with the women, in civilization.”
Am reading Sisterhood of Spies, about women working for the OSS during WWII. One of the stories mentions that the women in London had a male visitor who would eat in their mess hall once a month. He was married and wasn’t interested in hitting on any of the women; he just wanted to eat in an atmosphere where people said “Please pass the butter,” instead of “PASS THE GODDAMNED GREASE”
I dated a guy who brought me along on group activities (movies, video game night, etc.) with four or five other male friends. Once I mentioned to one of the other guys that I hoped I wasn’t intruding on their “guy time” or some such. He got this sort of rueful look and said, “The truth is, I really like it when you’re here because it gives us a reason to act better. When it’s just guys, we all have to try to outdo each other with how vile we are.”
So the moral of these stories are men don’t even treat each other like human beings.
Many years ago I joined a D&D group that had been going for several years and, until I arrived, was all men. The first session was awkward but I was very shy at the time and so assumed it was just because I was being oversensitive, but many months later, one of them took me asied and asked if I was happy in the group. I said yes, and asked why he wanted to know particularly.
“I don’t want you to leave,” he said. “Having you around means we have better conversations, in and out of character, because we’re not just trying to gross each other out or one up each other. I didn’t know Ryan could even speak in full sentences until you showed up and asked everyone how they are at the start of each session. I didn’t even know he had kids!”
They’d just been showing up, arguing, killing some kobolds or whatever, and going home, and at least two of them hadn’t really been enjoying it until they actually started socialising with it.
Society enables Toxic Masculinity so much that for too many men, the elements of toxic masculinity are the only form of masculinity they know.
society encourages and drives toxic masculinity to concentrate power in a small group of male people and leave everyone else hyperfocused on attaining ideals no one can live up to, regardless of gender, because the desire to conform and gain social capital are core monkey instincts: belonging = surviving. and they got warped and abused into this self-perpetuating bullshit that benefits almost no one
