My response to recent developments
#and all of your black friends

Something that I get chills about is the fact that the oldest story told made by the oldest civilization opens with "In those days, in those distant days, in those ancient nights."
This confirms that there is a civilization older than the Sumerians that we have yet to find
Some people get existential dread from this
Me? I think it's fucking awesome it shows just how much of this world we have yet to discover and that is just fascinating
@makaeru peer review cos this made me check when the Sumerians happened and I forget how recent history is for every other continent. 7000 - 8000 years ago just isn't that long when you're in Australia, and the amount of detailed history we have access to here is wonderful and should be recognised more internationally
Source (non Aboriginal)
And a quote I picked out from a longer interview with an Aboriginal local elder about the area where he touched on the history
Source (the rest of the interview is really interesting and all transcribed, have a look if you're curious)
This is part of my Ancient Civilizations class that I teach, which does a whole week about Australia and the Torres Strait Islands because I was sick of never seeing them represented in USAmerican history contexts. With the help of @micewithknives and @acearchaeologist I've learned so many incredible things about Australia's past and it's been incredibly rewarding to share them with students.
My favorite fact about Aboriginal oral history is the fact that we pretty recently discovered that the Aboriginal myth of the 7 Sisters, an origin story for the Pleiades star cluster, accurately reflects a point TEN THOUSAND YEARS AGO when two stars in the constellation got close enough together to no longer be distinguishable by the naked eye.
The story? 6 sisters running from something that took their 7th sister.
as a gilgar gunditj woman, i was not expecting to see my culture on my dash.
thank you for spreading our words and treating our culture with respect.
Boosting signal.
Echoes from the ancient human past, wonderful.
Their oral history also contains stories about hunting prehistoric megafauna too. Native Australians are the oldest existing culture on earth, which is even more amazing considering how hard the british tried to wipe it out.
Budji Bim volcano.
I actually looked up the story of The Seven Sisters / Pleiades on Wikipedia, the other day, 'cause I woke up from a dream that mentioned how ancient that story was. And I wanted to check how much of that was invented in-dream, and how much I was remembering something I learned while I was awake.
According to that article, some astronomers think that story is not ten thousand years old; they believe it to be a Hundred Thousand years old.
in the Haudenosaunee stories, we have the same 7 sisters, they danced without eating until they started to rise into the sky. One looked back to their parents and she became a falling star.
Independently we have almost the same story, even though we lived on the complete opposite of Earth
I sat way to long on this stupid joke. It was worth it for the opportunity to draw Elrond alone, he is so beautiful to draw. I also want to point out that Elrond is wearing one of Maedhros old bracelets. The blonde lady is my sister's OC Ancaladis, she is a friend of Celebrían an mother of Legolas.
Ancaladis (OC), Celebrían, Lemyarë (OC), Celebrimbor, Gil-Galad and of course Elrond.
MAY YOU NEVER LOSE YOUR HYPERFIXATION
Im making art again
Rereading actual Silm and the narrator (and also JRRT basically every other time he wrote about the character anywhere else) is more or less dotting little hearts over Fëanor's name.
Fëanor, losing his mind because Morgoth has just killed his father and running into the dark mad with grief:
The Narrator: 'His father was dearer to him than the Light of Valinor or the peerless works of his hands; and 💞😭 who among sons, of Elves or of Men, have held their fathers of greater worth?!!!'💕😖😭
Fëanor, still full of grief, rage and paranoia, about to invent elf-on-elf murder in his hurry to get out of Valinor: i hate the valar so much it's unreal. Viva la revolución.💣
The narrator: And they mourned not more for the death of the Trees than for the 😭marring of Feanor😭: of the works of Melkor one of the most evil. For 💞😌 Fëanor was made the mightiest in all parts of body 🍆 and mind✨, in valour, in endurance,💪 in beauty,😍 in understanding,💭 in skill,🙏 in strength and in subtlety alike, of all the Children of Iluvatar, and a bright flame was in him.🔥The works of wonder for the glory of Arda that he might otherwise have wrought only Manwe might in some measure conceive. 🔥💞🙏
And it was told by the Vanyar who held vigil with the Valar that when the messengers declared to Manwe the answers of Feanor to his heralds, Manwe wept and bowed his head.😭☠️
Me: h-hello?!!! Am I interrupting something?
JRRT through his spokesperson Gandalf several centuries after Fëanor invented kinslaying and cursed Oaths: oh to 😌💞perceive the unimaginable hand and mind of Feanor at their work...."🙏💞
alright then.
Tolkien any time he wrote about this character;
Its me.
More Tumblr x AO3 art. Anyone else remember when the archive was in the hospital for like 3 days? Yeahahahah that was scary
...also AO3 would get stabbed and then say 'im sorry for the mess' dksflakdfj;as
I was not prepared for Tumblr/AO3 hurt/comfort
you guys are so annoying. why do i have to see discourse every year that's like "was tolkien really a woke king or was he your conservative uncle?" the guy was a devout catholic and a genteel misogynist who maintained lifelong friendships with queer people and women, and this isn't even paradoxical because that was part of the upper-class oxford culture he was immersed in. tolkien told the nazis to fuck off (and in doing so demonstrated a real understanding of what racism is and why it's harmful, beyond simply "these guys are bad news because they're who my country is at war with right now") but his inner life was marked by internalized racism that is deeply and inextricably woven into the art that he made. he foolishly described himself as an anarcho-monarchist, and it's kind of crazy to see people on this website passionately arguing that he likely never meaningfully engaged with anarchist theory, because...yeah, no shit, of course he didn't. tolkien didn't have to engage with most sociopolitical theory because as an upper-class englishman of his position, he was never affected by any of the issues that this theory is concerned with. what is plainly obvious from reading both his fiction and letters is that tolkien's ideal political system was that the divinely ordained god-king would rise up and rule in perfect justice and humility; he didn't want a government, he wanted a king arthur, even though (obviously) he was aware that outcome was impossible. why is it so hard for people to accept that he was just some guy! his letters aren't a code you have to crack. no amount of arguing or tumblr-level analysis is going to one day reveal a rhetorically airtight internally consistent worldview spanning jrrt's fiction, academic work, and personal writings, thereby "solving" the question of whether he was a woke king or your conservative uncle. his ideology was extremely inconsistent because, at the end of the day, he was just some guy.
#but i love him your honour
