I’ve been purposely avoiding/neglecting writing this post. Even my family asked why I haven’t posted anything on my FB wall or my IG feed about it. Truth is, posting about it just feels like I’ve come to one more step to accepting it. I haven’t really accepted it just yet, but with my grandpa’s viewing(s) happening this weekend & his funeral on Monday, it’s becoming more of a reality. My grandpa passed away on a quiet Wednesday, July 13th 2022. The way I had found out was not ideal. I was driving to get lunch on my lunch break when I had gotten a random FB msg saying, “hey hate to be the bearer of bad news but there are a lot of police and paramedics in front of your grandparents house right now…” As soon as I read that, I left work instantly and drove to Union City as fast as I could. Though I didn’t make it in time, I stayed with my Grandpa until the coroners arrived 2 hours later. Yup. *Breathe* It’s been tough since. 2022 has already a rough year for me as I am going through a personal loss since the beginning of the year. My Grandpa was like a 2nd dad to me, and we were very close. He was the heart of my Basuel family. If my Grandpa hadn’t made the decision to join the US Navy a little after WWII, I probably wouldn’t be here right now. The first few photos posted here were of the last time I saw my Grandpa. It was Father’s Day, and I had gotten him a bunch of Navy veteran gear from my trip to the USS Midway in SD. (Side note: My Grandpa & entire Basuel family were stationed on Midway Island). I have a lot of peace knowing that my Grandpa lived a long, healthy, & happy life. He was 98. Though my Grandpa didn’t live passed 100, and didn’t get to see me walk down the isle and get married (like we joked about)… he lived such a fulfilled life. He was still driving his car, walking, doing yard work still & cooking with my Grandma. He was able to spend time with his children, grandchildren & his great grandchildren. ♥️ I will love and miss you forever Grandpa. Thank you for raising me. Every good thing about me I got and learned from you. I already know you’re having a great time up in heaven. Please watch over us, especially Grandma. We love you! Spelunking is one of my favorite hobbies, and Gold Mining Country has a lot of caverns to explore. My second time at Mercer Caverns and it never gets old. It was raining on this day, and we were all greeted with a tornado warning as soon we got out of the caves. I also got a lucky, cave’s kiss (a water drop fell on me while in the cave). These caves have only been partially explored. They still left the rover that the engineering student had left behind. There’s so much history with each rock formation having a name & a story. These caves were first discovered by gold miner prospect Walter J Mercer on Sept. 1, 1885. He started exploring these caves with just a rope & a candle. Til this day they still shut off the lights, light a candle & then blow out the candles to get a feel of how dark it is deep under the earth. The caverns have a large number of speleothems, stalactites, and stalagmites. They’ve also discovered skeleton remains belonging to the Mi-Wuk tribe there. The canvern temperature is 55 degrees year-round, and you descend about 160 vertical feet below the entrance. That time of the year where Highway 84/Niles Canyon Road is closed to vehicular traffic and opens up for cyclists, hikers & runners in an effort to create a Class 1 Trail through Niles Canyon. Being a Fremont local & hiker, I’m all for creating & implementing more trails into the trail system within the East Bay Regional Park District. Especially through the historic and beautiful Niles, Fremont. Had a good time exploring the canyon & walking 6.4 miles, and checking out the booths and food trucks after. Walked into Columbia with my Birkenstocks, walked out of Columbia with my 4th pair of cowgirl boots. 🤠 I’ve always had a thing for small, historic towns. Any town that makes me feel like I’m walking through Mark Twain’s, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” I’ve always been fascinated with. Not my first time at Columbia, and I can never get tired of Gold Mining Country & the Sierras. ——————- Gold was discovered in Columbia on March 27, 1850. By 1870, the “Gem of the Southern Mines” produced more than $1 billion (in today’s figures). Today this town, which is also a California State Historic Park still bustles with shops, exhibits and the lively activity of the 1850’s. Recycle, dispose wastes properly, reduce the use of plastics, plant more trees, leave no trace while enjoying the outdoors and wear sustainable clothing brands that are carbon neutral. ♻️ - Had the pleasure of walking through the Calaveras North Grove trail at the Calaveras Big Trees State Park in Gold Country. First photo is of me inside a giant sequoia tree named, “The Father of the Forest” tree that fell to earth long before Euro-Americans discovered the grove. It’s always a humbling experience being among these ancient, giant sequoia trees. 🌲 - The last photo is a sad one. It’s a picture of the “Mother of the Forest” tree. It’s a symbol of greed and thoughtlessness. Named for its beauty and size, she was stripped of its bark in 1854. Promoters shipped the bark strips back east for exhibitions in New York and London. A crew of men worked at the tree's systematic destruction for ninety days. Though many were eager to see evidence of this Sierra Nevada big tree, the act of the tree's ruin also sparked outrage. Through the Mother of the Forest's great sacrifice it heightened an awareness about the need to protect these trees.
