this fanfic shit is easy
At some point after the cottage but before the public outing TMZ does an article on “Ilya Rozanov’s most high-profile hookups” which is essentially just a list of Instagram models with paparazzi shots and blurry cellphone pics of Ilya at the club. Shane scrolls through it, absolutely seething, because he is Ilya’s most high-profile hookup - maybe not by their metric, which seems to be Instagram followers, but Shane hasn’t heard about a single one of these women, apart from Svetlana whom he wouldn’t have recognised if not for Ilya talking about her. The guys are talking about it in the locker room, as if Ilya’s a legend for getting with all of these supposedly very desirable women (although that is decidedly not the way the guys phrase it) and Shane is absolutely furious because he can’t tell anyone that none of these women got to keep him. He is the only one who’s gotten to call Ilya his. He is the only person Ilya’s been in love with.
Anyway, after the next Boston/Montreal game Ilya shows up to practice genuinely looking like he’s been mauled. His entire body is covered in hickeys and bruises that look suspiciously like bite marks - his neck is basically covered in purpling marks with a fair few centred on his chest but a couple of the bruises trail further down, one on his pubic bone, a couple on his thighs, and the darkest one on his hip, a large circle of clear teeth marks - not only that but his back has been practically scratched to ribbons. Ilya is basically a walking sign spelling out “TAKEN - BACK OFF” and when the gossip of Ilya Rozanov apparently having been locked down by a wild animal reaches the Montreal locker room Shane can’t help the proud little smile that blooms on his face because, yes, that’s his man.

Hollanov via Yuna's Meddling
Ilya never went to the NHL AU. It's summer of 2017: Scott Hunter came out publicly, Shane dated Rose and has confirmed his suspicions that he's gay and, without Ilya in the picture, has come out to his parents. He's single and planning to keep pretending he's not gay until he retires. Then Ilya Rozanov, star KHL player, gets outed. He manages to find out before the news drops and flees to Canada, where the Ottawa Centaurs is more than willing to help him secure refugee status and a job as their new star center.
Ilya doesn't want to be anyone's gay - bisexual - idol. He's not Scott Hunter; he just fucks pretty people and plays better hockey than nearly anyone else in the world. To the media and public, he's sarcastic and cutting and unaffected. Alone, he's depressed and isolated and exhausted. Yuna Hollander looks at him and sees a young queer man the same age as her son who has lost his connection to his language and culture, and can never go home again. She knows he very likely has no one in his corner backing him up, making sure that he's not getting shitty contracts and sponsors. And Yuna decides the person to fix that is going to be her.
Shane is immediately mortified to find out his mom is intervening in Ilya's life, but Yuna throws herself into it: She finds him queer-friendly sponsors (which she tells Shane is to his benefit too if he ever wants to come out as well), cheers him on at home games, and gives Ilya a space in her and David's home. At Christmas, Shane is awkwardly sharing his childhood bedroom with a very attractive, openly-into-men Ilya, who clocks Shane's attraction and riles him up where his parents can't see. They exchange numbers and Shane vows he won't text Ilya, except suddenly that's what he's doing all the time.
Yuna encourages Shane to be publicly friendly to Ilya, both to counter Ilya's slutty bad boy reputation and to show that Ilya has support from a top player. At All-Stars, Shane makes the "mistake" of sleeping with Ilya and tells Ilya that it can't happen again and he can tell no one this happened, especially not his mom. It happens again when Ilya plays Montreal.
It comes to a head when Yuna invites Ilya to spend some of the off-season up at their cottages and Shane says Ilya can stay with him. Cue a very hot sex marathon where we are totally not into each other beyond the sex, nuh-uh.
David walks in on them and the parents are jointly raising their eyebrows at Shane for thinking he was successfully making eyes at Ilya without them noticing. And now, a year after his life fell apart, Ilya has a new family who cares about him and a boyfriend who loves him.
ilya not even being aware that he's a dom before he meets shane he just throws out get on your knees because it's hot and he's horny and he's expecting shane to tell him to fuck off or something but then quickly realizes oh okay so i guess this is what we're doing
who knows what we might have in common?
Heated Rivalry S1 (2025)
Love thinking about an AU where the relationship reveal with Yuna and David happens because something overwhelms Shane into a panic attack/breakdown, maybe they're at some NHL show or event, maybe it's just been a really long fucking day, maybe suddenly Shane feels just completely overwhelmed by the lights and the noise and all the fucking people wanting to shake his hand or slap his back or tell him how much they like his fucking play.
Yuna notices something is wrong because of course she does and together with David they herd Shane into some private empty side room hoping it will help him calm down. But it doesn't. He wont stop shaking and his breathing is too fast and he flinches at their voices even tho nobody is speaking loudly. Won't let Yuna come close to hug him or rub his arm.
Maybe Yuna is starting to panic a little herself, her heart aching as she watches Shane wrap his own arms around himself, hates that she cant do anything when her son is so clearly in distress, hates that she can't seem to think of anything that will work-
When suddenly the door bangs open and Ilya Fucking Rozanov??? strides into the room with quick steps, makes a beeline directly for her son, eyes locked on him like he doesnt even register her and David in the room as well and Yuna opens her mouth to cuss him out, tell him to fuck off and not bother Shane right now, she can feel her body moving already to stand in front of Shane protectively when David grabs her arm because-
Because Rozanov is pulling Shane into his arms, one hand on the back of Shane's neck, guiding his head to press into the crook of Rozanov's neck and Shane isn't fighting it, doesn't flinch from his touch. He goes where Rozanov arranges him and let's himself be held and rocked back and forth gently as Rozanov presses his mouth to Shane's ear and starts whispering something so quietly that Yuna can't really make out the words but what she can see is Shane's shaking subsiding, hands fisting tightly into Rozanov's shirt, his breathing going slowly back to normal because - oh. oh - her son is syncing his breaths with Rozanov who, Yuna realises, is taking very exaggerated deep slow breaths of his own so Shane can match them. And then Rozanov turns slightly while still rocking them both back and forth and Yuna sees Shane's face where it's smushed into Rozanov's neck. Sees the look there.
And that's how Yuna realises her son is in love and the man - his years-long rival - he loves must have left in the middle of his award-winning show to come here and pull her son out of a panic attack like there was no place he'd rather be than right here with Yuna's overwhelmed panicked boy in his arms, soothing him until Shane's body relaxes completely into that hold, mumbling that he's fine yet not pulling away and Rozanov makes no move to let go either.
Oh, Yuna thinks again, gripping David's hand tightly. It's not just Shane. My baby is in love. And he's loved back.
im seeing a lot of confusion about rachel reid's discord comments, because how can she assert that her major notes for TLG were about shane's selfishness and stupidity and inattentiveness to his sad boyfriend, when shane is the one who reaches out to ilya, gently suggests he's mentally struggling and could talk to a professional, and ilya is the one who rudely shuts him down?
meanwhile, when shane is the one going through it—he's anxious about being outed and doesnt want to come out due to the league's homophobia, he's personally threatened by the commissioner, he struggles with disordered eating, if not an outright eating disorder (outright saying he diets for a sense of control, feeling guilty about tasting lemonade on his boyfriend's lips, his low point is eating one singular snicker's bar)—ilya fails to reciprocate empathy. shane tells ilya about the commissioner threatening him and ilya basically goes great now my bitch bf will never want to come out 🙄 (compare this with how he reacts when his reformed bigot white bestie troy was threatened by the commissioner: ilya is automatically protective of him.) shane starts an unhealthily restrictive diet due to his fears of aging (read: being pushed) out of the sport, and ilya looks down on him for it and mocks his diet to his face. shane, who is a hypervisible athlete of color in an extremely white sport, looks uncomfortable in a room full of white people talking about the league's issues, and ilya deduces that this is because shane doesnt know "the dark side of hockey" the way he does. this is a ridiculous assumption that should reveal a worrying lack of empathy for his partner of color, especially since throughout the series there is a pattern of other hockey players targeting shane with homophobic language, which ilya has been present for. except rachel herself states shane has no trauma from the sport and shane's own pov asserts that hockey has never made him sad.
do you guys get where im going with this? the elephant in the room is race. rachel narratively blames shane, hyperscrutinizes his flaws and justifies or provides excuses for ilya's, because she has implicit racist biases and subconsciously sees empathy as a one-way obligation in their relationship. ilya lacks empathy for shane because she lacks empathy for shane and thinks ilya is right. she monopolizes empathy for ilya because he is white and because she doesnt see characters of color as fully people and capable of having their own interiority or struggles to explore. if you've read tough guy or role model, you can see this same exact thing play out in ryan price and fabian salah's relationship or with troy barrett and his ex adrian dela cruz.
and remember how i said that there's a pattern of other hockey players being homophobic to shane? this is never brought up in shane's pov, not even hinted at. we only see these instances through the pov of white characters and are only given explorations of how they feel, not shane. shane is completely absent except as a prop to make her sadboy white characters feel tormented and angry, and rachel never connects his "self-absorbed" anxieties about wanting to stay closeted to the disproportionate homophobia he already faces, because rachel is uninterested in giving shane grace.
so when rachel says ilya's biggest flaw is his fear of being hurt (note how the language centers his hurt, not how his actions cause hurt), while shane's is his supposed selfishness (is shane not also afraid of being hurt? isnt that where his food issues and unwillingness to come out come from)? when she said shane is too focused on his "ridiculous" diet and not on "actually important things" like his depressed boyfriend? when she said in a reddit AMA that she only gave shane food issues to give ilya something to poke fun at? when that one interviewer asked her about the criticisms of how she wrote her asian character and she pivoted to talking about ilya's childhood trauma? her fetishistic descriptions of shane and fabian, to the point you can tell she wanted to call them exotic and her editor probably told her to tone it down? the way she contrasts adrian's appearance and supposed shortcomings with harris? her insistence that her books are challenging hockey culture while completely dismissing how hostile and dehumanizing it can be to people of color?
it's racism all the way down guys
somehow it comes up that troy had a crush on shane and was going to ask for his number. and after troy gets ribbed by his teammates and ilya makes a big scene, shane is like, “well i never would’ve gone out with you lol.”
and troy smiles, “right, because you were with roz the whole time.”
“i mean, yes, but also because you and dallas kent spent years calling me and jj ‘rush hour’ and asking hayden if his wife was his beard to cover up his big gay relationship with me.”
the rest of the centaurs blink. harris puts his head in his hands and groans.
and troy’s like, “oh. right. sorry about that :/“
"you and dallas kent spent years calling me and jj ‘rush hour’"
GOD. 💀
And what's sad is that I feel it in my spirit that if Game Changers had been written by a better author who actually took the realities of Shane's Asian race seriously (and not just for her fetishizing exotic long-haired twunks but I digress), we would actually have a much more believable depiction of Troy Barrett as the kind of bigot who'd legit say that crap.
Like, ain't no way you're standing idly by as your BFF rapes scores of helpless women and lies about it; as the two of you bully everyone in the locker rooms AND on the ice dropping f-slurs like candy; as you terrorize everyone within hearing range openly mocking & disrespecting their (alleged) sexualities (cuz he's also spreading nasty rumors about players)--and then suddenly expect me to believe you're not also being racist towards them as well.
Especially since this is THEE Shane Hollander, the Asian phenom in the white-dominated sport of wonder-bread hockey; who's been singlehandedly embarrassing the entire league with how amazing he plays. On top of how polite & kind Canada's "Golden Boy of Hockey" is, in an environment stuffed to the gills with toxic masculinity & crass chirping to publicly demean fellow players--especially rival players.
And you mean to tell me the National Caucasian League wouldn't smart at having some Asian guy beat them at their own game? When the exact same people get PISSED at Asian Exceptionalism even outside of sports--"oh, they're taking our jobs; they're taking our kids' seats in ivy league schools, etc etc!" Now they're taking our Stanley Cups?! In the ONE (1) major white sport we still had left?! 😭😩 You mean to tell me Dallas & Troy & their goons weren't dropping racist slurs on top of the homophobia we already KNOW Troy & Dallas used on Shane in CANON?
Yeeeeeaaaahhhhh--I'm not buying it, Rachel! 😅
I need someone to write a fic where
1) Shane is moving to the Cens and it actually IS very awkward and the Cens are not lovely and wholesome right off the bat because
2) there is a widespread misunderstanding when Shane and Ilya get outed where the Cens, missing ALL of the context, are assuming that Shane must’ve been a shit partner with how rough Ilya was doing this past season and assume that Shane was *forcing* Ilya to stay closeted because he’s *ashamed* of Ilya and their relationship
3) Shane is actually pretty hurt by the Cens being cold and distant with him but doesn’t complain about it because literally everyone else ever has behaved like that towards him in his life except for Ilya, Rose, and the Pikes. He’s very much like “well well look who’s inside again” about it.
4) Ilya doesn’t realize the Cens are thinking Shane is BadTM because he’s wrapped up in how happy he is to have Shane around now. He actually does not realize any of this is happening until their first week of practice as a new team and he sees his team icing his husband out
5) Ilya tries to talk to Shane about it but Shane is very much like “don’t worry Ilya this is normal and I’m fine cause I have you” and it makes Ilya want to kill the Metros three times over
6) Shane also agrees with the Cens about himself being a shitty husband when he hears the reasoning behind their behavior. So he just decides to work hard at being a husband and a teammate and keep his head down.
7) Ilya doesn’t know what to do. Shane is adamant that he doesn’t want Ilya to confront the team and that he can’t control what others think about him and he doesn’t want it to be a big deal. But Ilya is also seeing Shane be as sad and withdrawn as he was last season and is actively getting worse- being more strict than ever about his diet, constantly working out and straining himself, being first on the ice and last to leave
8) some of the Cens slowly start realizing that they have Shane wrong over more time with him- mainly Luca, Troy, Harris, Wyatt, and Bood. But they have put walls up that they don’t know how to tear down without spooking Shane.
9) The rest of the team don’t realize how shitty this must be for Shane until the Cens go up against the Metros and they realize that they’ve been treating Shane the same way his old and terrible teams did- they watch as Shane takes scathing insults with a blank face, gets back up without a word after being smashed against the boards, gives a polite smile (the same smile he’s given them when they’re being passive aggressive) when receiving glares and threats from his ex teammates.
10) idk it can go many ways from here- Shane gets hurt and has to leave the ice and the teams finds him genuinely upset and they all have a confrontation- or the Metros target Ilya and the Cens see Shane lose his shit and how in love and protective he is- or the Cens stop icing him out after this and slowly start to actually get to know him and maybe apologize. Idk. The world is your oyster or whatever. I just want Protective Cens but it Backfires Pretty Badly.
11) Bonus points if Ilya eventually confronts them and then, when he hears their reasoning, is very much like “you??? Hurt my husband??? For me??? He wasn’t a bad partner??? I have depression??? Is chemical imbalance not abuse???????” And is absolutely pissed lmao
somehow it comes up that troy had a crush on shane and was going to ask for his number. and after troy gets ribbed by his teammates and ilya makes a big scene, shane is like, “well i never would’ve gone out with you lol.”
and troy smiles, “right, because you were with roz the whole time.”
“i mean, yes, but also because you and dallas kent spent years calling me and jj ‘rush hour’ and asking hayden if his wife was his beard to cover up his big gay relationship with me.”
the rest of the centaurs blink. harris puts his head in his hands and groans.
and troy’s like, “oh. right. sorry about that :/“
some amazing additions from the tags
Hey! I love your Shane blowing up at Troy post - thoughts on the Bood of it all? I can’t remember if he’s the only PoC on the Cens pre-Shane but I think it would be interesting if he’s like. Perfectly Pleasant to Troy but in a coworker way and then Shane joins and Ilya’s been hoping that Shane would make friends with Troy because he thinks they’d get on (and if Troy didn’t have History they probably would have!) and then — it’s not like, immediate, but at some point during preseason/early season, someone says something in the locker room (not badly intentioned or anything truly bad at all! just Very White) and Shane and Bood both like, sigh quietly and then clock the other doing the same. And then before anyone knows it Shane and Bood are - not besties but they’re definitely closer than Shane is to anyone else on the team except Ilya (and maybe Luca)
i'm sorry if this goes on a tangent about racism in game changers (or lack thereof). let it be known that this was originally twice as long but i felt your question was getting lost at that point lol.
i just want to say that i love this question but it's hard to answer because troy and bood have actual interaction in role model, whereas troy does not interact with shane hardly at all in the books. it's easier for me to make up scenarios with troy and shane because they don't have much of an established canonical relationship.
it's also a difficult question to answer using the parameters set in the books. rachel reid addressed the toxic parts of hockey culture without really acknowledging racism as a part of it. i understand that she may have felt this was outside her purview, but it feels like a huge blind spot in the books. troy was not canonically racist, nor was dallas kent. as far as i know the only canonically racist people in the gcu are troy’s father and roger crowell. but I don’t think it’s at all a stretch to suppose that the homophobic, misogynistic, r*pist was also racist. and that troy was, at the very least, a lacky to laugh at the racist things kent said.
so in a world where hockey has all the real-world problems (racism, homophobia, sexual assault, etc), i unfortunately think dallas kent and troy were probably just a drop in the bucket of the racist stuff bood and shane heard on the ice and in locker rooms. remember too, these are millennial men who grew up on 'the office' humor. like they were also hearing this stuff normalized on TV, movies, etc. bood is canonically fairly friendly to troy, as opposed to shane who has minimal to no interaction with troy in the books. so supposing troy was at least complicit in some racism, while also trying not to ignore canon, bood’s either not too affected by troy’s part in it or very forgiving. or a combination of both.
and for the record, i don’t think shane is that affected by troy’s past either, at least that he’s consciously aware of. he actually commends troy for standing up to kent and expresses hatred for only kent in the long game. however, just because shane may not hate troy for his past words and may even forgive him before he joins the centaurs, does not mean he would forget. and it definitely does not mean that he would ever entertain going out with troy, making it sorta WILD for troy to even THINK about asking for shane's number. like yeah you're out of the closet now but did you forget that you sucked?? that’s what i was getting at in my original post. others added fascinating ideas to explore about the possible dynamic between troy and shane. i don’t know if canon supports their ideas, but then again, canon doesn’t necessarily support my original post either.
ANYWAY all this to say that i don’t think that bood would be strictly professional with troy as perhaps shane would (as explored in the tags and comments of my post). BUT i adore the idea of shane and bood finding camaraderie with one another as, at least as described, the only two poc on the centaurs. i think it would be inevitable for them to hear Very White TM things said by their teammates, and i would love to see shane in a place where he can commiserate and complain about it. i would also love to see them bond over both being in interracial relationships, as that is not really explored in canon. i personally think that shane would be closest to wyatt bc he's kinda weird and possibly neurodivergent, but would love to see bood as a close second.
i loved your take on it too though! hope this answered your great question. sorry for all the yaps!
I am already bracing myself for the part of the fandom that I know is going to love and adore Troy Barrett in season two, without any regard for his years of simply deplorable behaviour, because he's gay and sad about it now,
while simultaneously painting Shane as the literal antichrist because he (checks notes) wasn't aware of the true state of his boyfriend's mental health when they were a) living in different cities, b) he was dealing with his own issues at the time, and c) the boyfriend was actively hiding it from him
Can't wait to deal with that
