There are only around 600,000 Native Hawaiians left. Only around 200,000 of them live in Hawai’i.

Hawai’i has the second largest homeless population in the nation, falling just behind New York. There are 19 million people in New York. Hawaii only has 1.4 million people. Yet their homeless rates are neck and neck. A majority of those experiencing homelessness in Hawai’i are Native Hawaiian.

Tourism destroys sacred land. Mountains are moved to make room for telescopes. People live in tiny concrete apartments that cost $2k a month because the rich move to the islands to carve their own paradise. My people spend every night praying we can afford to eat the next day

The Navy poisons the water over and over. They lie and say it’s safe. People fall ill. Then they dump the waste into the ocean and promise to do better. They lie.

End the romanization of Hawai’i. There is no paradise under American occupation.

Regarding some things that have happened, I have a radical suggestion for 2022:

Any time you are about to pay a white creator for something, stop and see if there’s a person if color doing the same thing you can (stretch outside of your comfort zone and) support.

Any time you are about to reward a white creator with thousands of supporters by adding your money on the pile, stop and question whether they really need it, your motivations for supporting their work, and how whiteness and privilege might affect your attraction to their work, the visibility and prominence they have by which you noticed them, and how society may have influenced your impulse to buy into whatever they are selling.

People of color struggle for visibility and also suffer from it when we have to deal with the ubiquity of white audiences who do not properly value or understand our work.

People of color still make cents on the white dollar.

There are things we can do to help- one is perhaps taking attention away from ppl who have more than enough and redistributing it where it is needed.

He wasn’t just into copper trading. There are letters complaining about Ea-nasir’s business practices with respect to everything from kitchenwares to real estate speculation to second-hand clothing. The guy was everywhere.

The majority of the surviving correspondences regarding Ea-nasir were recovered from one particular room in a building that is believed to have been Ea-nasir’s own house.

Like, these are clay tablets. They’re bulky, fragile, and difficult to store. They typically weren’t kept long-term unless they contained financial records or other vital information (which is why we have huge reams of financial data about ancient Babylon in spite of how little we know about the actual culture: most of the surviving tablets are commercial inventories, bills of sale, etc.).

But this guy, this Ea-nasir, he kept all of his angry letters - hundreds of them - and meticulously filed and preserved them in a dedicated room in his house. What kind of guy does that?
