today I found out my mother doesn’t know what dandelions are and now I’m wondering what other strange secrets she’s been quietly harboring
Where do you live that you don’t have dandelions?
we have dandelions EVERYWHERE, they are basically our State Weed, it is absolutely impossible that my mom has never interacted with a dandelion before, this requires further investigation
So after extensive interrogation I have an update:
my mom is in fact aware that dandelions exist. she temporarily forgot the name and there was some miscommunication.
the truth is actually weirder
she’s aware dandelions look like this
she is familiar with this flower. she knows the name of this flower. she declines to believe, however, that these are also dandelions
she does not believe these are the same plant. I tried to explain, and she thought I was either misinformed or lying. so I asked her what exactly did she think the yellow ones were called?
she answered, with complete confidence: Daffodils.
gosh I enjoy this website
For comparison, this is a daffodil
See, folks in the southern US will tell you up and down those are buttercups, actually.
i don’t think so? i’m southern and buttercups are what we call these things (much tinier)
Wait I thought those bigger cup ones were Easter Lillies???
This is an Easter Lily. It is an actual lily and therefore deadly to cats.
They’re marigolds and I know a bitch when I see one!
This is a marigold:
….we need to start taking the phrase “go touch grass” more literally. go outside and examine a flower i beg u
“buttercups” is a name applied to MANY flowers. in my part of the south it was this one:
imo there’s correct identifications of dandelions, daffodils, easter lilies and marigolds in this thread, but buttercups are simply impossible to agree on and the only solution is for everyone to post pictures of their local buttercups
*squints* is that a motherfucking EVENING PRIMROSE?!??

outsiders and boring normal people and fandom newbies always think that buckwild kinky porn fanfiction is the strangest fandom hobby but they are wrong.
the strangest fandom hobby is plotty fanfiction, the kind that requires research, because engaging in this hobby makes no goddamned sense.
it doesn’t even give anybody masturbation material, which is at least a logical and admirable goal that contributes to the betterment of society, or at least society’s solitary orgasms.
in other news i hope the cia spyware monitoring my internet usage understands that i’m googling information about smuggling drugs in thailand because i want the details to be right in a single paragraph in a 10,000 word story about a gay mafia guys.
this post has been making the rounds again and i just want to state for the record that it is a fucking delight to read in the tags all the random things people research for their fanfic and art. fandom, i love you. i love you with your flood maps and medical procedures and tentacle biology and historical fashion and traditional handcrafts and conlangs and urban geography and literally everything else. i am completely sincere about this. the enthusiasm with which people embrace detailed, deep, and often obscure research, just because they want to get it right, because they want to create something rich and interesting, it makes me feel better about the world. i adore it.

🔎Scam Exam(ination)🔍 updated 6/15/26
Seen as: Verify your account / "Lurker Mode" Scam type(s): Phishing / Credit card + info stealer.
Hello everyone! This is a post going over the scam floating around on tumblr where users are receiving DM's, asks, and/or are being @ spammed in comments on a blog post by accounts that look like this: (note: they use around 6-8 numbers but it does vary)
account-update-#### notification-#### system-update-##### system-updates-##### account-bot-reply account-updating-####### <random string of 10-13 numbers> ✨new.. lol ✨
What the scam looks like:
These accounts are pretending to be [tumblr] staff/staff 'bots', often show up in waves making a post with a AI (disgustang) image and a long wall of text below it while @ spamming users in the comments telling them that they need to click the link in the post otherwise their accounts will be terminated/banned within 24/48 hours.
Recent images of this scam can be seen here:
The text description of this post will look like this: (note: I don't want to copy paste it into this post and risk getting banned so the text version will be in the alt text of the images)
The comments will look similar to this, although this image is outdated, with many users spammed in hundreds of comments:
Do note: These accounts are not real staff accounts. Nor has [tumblr] or its staff ever used 'bots', 'automatic operators' or made posts to alert users of account issues like this.
Official [tumblr] accounts will have a badge! It looks like this:
The biggest part of this scam is this, taken from one of their posts:
To safeguard your profile during this process, Lurker Mode has been activated: Your posts remain fully visible to you. Your profile is temporarily hidden from the global dashboard, search results, and discovery feeds.
Lurker Mode is not a real thing on [tumblr]. This is not a mode or 'feature' that exists. It has never existed in the 14 years I've used tumblr.
These posts will also say:
Please complete a secure verification process to confirm your age within the next 48 hours.
This is to imply urgency and to make you feel pressured into going to the link without thinking. Do not go to this website. It is a phishing website made to look like tumblr. Here is how it looks:
🚩Immediate Red flags🚩
Look at the website address. It is not [tumblr] dot com. It's a phishing website made to look like tumblr.
[tumblr] does not have a chat bot that tells you to pay money. It has never had a chat bot like this. That too should tell you it's fake.
[tumblr] does not, nor ever has, had a pop up telling you to verify your account, either. Again, you clicked the same link others have. This website is not unique to you, or your account.
Your account is safe. This is a phishing website. Do not give them your credit card information, or your personal information! It will steal it!
Here are the dangers that come with giving them your information...
The phishing website:
Now you may be asking: okay, what does this website do exactly?
It's really just a simple website made to look like tumblr, have you click a button, and then it takes you to a page where you pay money. There's a fake AI "help bot" that gives you instructions, but, again, [tumblr] has never had that. so that alone should be a massive red flag that this is 100% fake.
Here is the page that appears once you click 'verify your account.'
If you notice- there's nothing here that asks you for anything related to your tumblr account. Nothing at all.
The chat bot will give you instructions saying what to do next, otherwise it's all just.. words and 'give us money.
Pause and think about this:
Did you give tumblr- the real tumblr- your credit card information when signing up? The answer would be no. It's 100% free to sign up for tumblr, and costs users nothing to use the platform. The only time a user has to pay for something is when you buy something from TumblrMart, their official store.
Any account issue [tumblr] may have with your account, is handled via the email that's connected to your account. If you had randomly been terminated, gotten banned, or broke TOS and got a warning, you'd get an email about it.
Not an ask from an account, not a DM, or a comment on a post telling you that 'if you don't go here you'll be gone in 24 hours.'
Again, your account is safe, nothing is wrong. Remember to report these accounts (that make the posts not the ones tagging you!) as:
something else > unlawful use > phishing
Remember to say it's a staff impersonation account, and that you were tagged with others in the comments. :) Everything will be okay.
The DM Method: (outdated..?)
These fake accounts can also send users messages similar to the following via asks or DM's:
Your Tumblr account has been temporarily locked due to security measures. Verify your account within 24 hours to stop permanent suspension.
Suspicious activity has been detected on your account! Our team has begun an investigation. To continue using your account, you must complete user verification.
Visual examples of this can be seen here:
Image 1 taken from this post, image 2 taken from this one.
-----
Take a deep breath, and remember:
[tumblr] staff will not contact users via asks, comments, or direct messages regarding any issues related to your account.
[tumblr] will only contact you on the account you used to register your account with, via their official email account that ends in tumblr.com.
[tumblr] will never ask you for money to 'verify' your account, to reactivate your account, to 'fix an issue', or anything similar to the sort.
[tumblr] staff does not use Discord, telegram, whatsapp, or any other social media account method to handle any kind of issue. Nor do they use any other website. If you need to contact them, use their support page!
[tumblr] staff will never, ever, threaten you that if you don't "pay someone money", your information will be sent to the police, FBI, ect and you will be arrested for xyz reason.
If you are contacted by any user who tries to get you to contact someone who is allegedly a [tumblr] staff member by showing you a report ticket and a 'staff card' showing their discord, whatsapp, telegram, or email, or they tell you to go to a website that isn't tumblr, that is likely the "I accidentally reported your account" scam.
You should report that DM, and go a step further and report a post the hacked account has made* as well for phishing.
(Note: this also works with reblogs, just please make sure you're reporting the hacked accounts reblog, not the original post..)
Providing screenshots is also always a good idea in these situations as well. :)
Final thoughts:
This is a very.. concerning and worrying phishing scam that can do a lot of damage if you're not careful.
This is honestly no different than those "you have a package from the UPS click here" or "you owe money from a toll both click here" scams you get in texts, and I would think people would know that- by looking at the URL alone, this is not owned nor operated by [tumblr] in any regard.
Please make sure to share this and help others become aware of scams, the more people who learn about scams, the less likely they are to fall for them. :)
Take care, stay safe, and keep helping others.

just learned americans have different standard paper sizes than everyone else. what do you MEAN you don’t have A4 as the standard. what do you mean your standard paper size isn’t even the same size as an A4. apparently it’s like. ’letter’ and ’legal’ and whatever else. help!!!
this is so scary
That has to be false. That's misinformation hold on
holy fucking shit
So I work in engineering; and always wondered who used these weird “A” sizes I’d see in large printer settings that I’ve never seen any company even have paper in stock for. Now I know.
And now I have to be one of those obnoxious US Americans because WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU USE THESE WEIRD UNEVEN DIMENSIONS!? Even in metric most of the “A” settings are an annoying ratio! 210x297mm? 594x841mm!? What’s the point of using such small units of measurement if you’re not going to make sensible sizes!?
because the largest standard paper size is A0 which is exactly one square metre of paper with an aspect ratio of the square root of two. this gives us a nice simple measurement of area for the paper as well as allows us to do the halving/doubling magic. A1 is 0.5m², A2 is 0.25m² etc.
The halving/doubling magic that psychaun refers to is the fact that you can get each paper in the series by cutting the previous one in half. I fold some A4 paper in half, I have an A5 booklet. I tape two A4 pieces together along their long side, I have an A3 piece. Each piece of paper is half the area of the previous and half the width of the previous' length with a length the same as the previous' width. The aspect ratio is exactly the same for every size. This makes it very easy to resize things, fold things inside each other, and calculate the size of paper you've never used before based on its name. "I can resize this to fit any other paper size because the aspect ratio is identical," "I can fold a standard size in half to get the next standard size down" and "the area I'm working with can be multiplied up to fit into a metre squared without any messy fractions of leftover paper" are all far more practical considerations for a paper size than "the millimetre length of this paper size isn't a round number".
fyi there are also B sizes in paper, which fit in between the A sizes - less often used but good for book covers and stuff
a Bn size is the mean between An and An-1
and then C sizes for envelopes, such that a C4 envelope fits an unfolded sheet of A4 etc
Reblogging because this is something I find interesting.
Also because it’s another example of how the United States has to do things differently—to its detriment.
This is a bad take, friend.
The US doesn't "have to do things different" for the sake of doing things differently, as your words imply, nor is the sentence above about who uses what paper fully correct, either*.
The reason that the US (and Canada, most of Central America, Chile, and the Philippines) use different standard sizes* from Europe is probably pretty easy to figure out when you think about things like "there's a big fucking ocean between two of those places, but not between all of the countries in Europe."
The standard size of paper, according to the American Forest and Paper Association, comes from the days of manual paper-making, and their assertion that 44" is about the length of the average experienced vatsman's comfortable grasp. So a sheet is 1/4" that length. The US standardized its own paper according to what legacy equipment it had, and keeps those standards because even today, paper tends to not be shipped back and forth between Europe and the US unless it has to be, because paper and books are really fucking heavy, so why should either one of us change our standards? Doing so would require massive amounts of capital investment, and frankly, we like our paper sizes just fine. It's really not to our detriment at all. We don't really import a lot of paper, and in fact, we export a lot of it.
American paper sizes are also half of each previous size, it's just that our base is a rectangle, not a square, uses imperial measurements, and reaches back to measurements based on manual paper-making. Sure, we could spend billions of dollars changing our standards to meet that of countries that don't supply us with this good, creating a massive amount of industrial and consumer waste as everything from paper manufacturing mills and industrial printing presses to plastic binders and hole punches at schools all become garbage, but... why? We also use different standard sizes of snack food bags, based on how our industries developed, but there's no actual reason for those things to be standardized, so why, exactly, should they be? Because it bothers someone who doesn't use our machines and didn't know until today that it was different? That's not a real reason. That's just "haha the US sucks and is dumb and irrational."
No, it's actually super fucking rational when you remember that most European countries are smaller than US states, and we're standardized across the places where paper actually moves back and forth in massive bulk on a regular basis. You know: our own states, and Canada, and not Europe, on account of this being a huge fucking continent and paper being incredibly heavy and expensive to transport across oceans. That's why it's governed by the American National Standards Institute, which also governs or governed stuff like thread standards for nuts and bolts & exposure standards for film. The latter had the ANSI standard become the ISO standard, which is a great example of technology which was developed more recently and more specialized and thus not so deeply rooted and hard to change being much more possible to standardize.
tl;dr: all industrial standards like paper sizes have valid and long-argued reasons why they're like that, and unless you're coughing up the solution for changing something with hundreds of years of built-up infrastructure without breaking all of the industries that depend on that standard, the cash to do it, and the reason why all the old equipment that can't be converted should become garbage... fuck off, man, and leave us alone. There are real problems in the world, go solve those.
*While many Mesoamerican countries have officially adopted ISO standards, ANSI standard paper is most commonly in use day to day.
Thanks (honorific) Spider for the very salient argument.
So, just a small correction. The aspect ratio of A0 paper is not square, but 1:√2. Which will stay in that aspect ratio each time you halve it (√2/2:1 is √2:2 is 1:√2). But yeah, each of them has their specific reasons why they are that length, and the ISO is based less on historical reasons and more on the metric system, but there it is.
Yeah, I was genuinely more focused on explaining why American industry turned out the way it did and misspoke, and also on not caring very much about A paper sizes, bc I fully don't use them or care why they're like they are. They are as irrelevant to me as ANSI should be to everybody else.
I also missed pointing out the obvious as to "why does the Philippines use American paper sizes," bc I thought the answer (colonialism) was obvious (colonialism) and I wouldn't have to explain (it's because of the US) to a supposedly intelligent audience (guys, it's colonialism). But I should have remembered the "piss on the poor" website.
Anyway, it's colonialism. That's why the Philippines uses ANSI paper sizes.
ppl who celebrate fictional character birthdays are annoying pass it on
