My mum was watching a baking show where a 20 year old Muslim woman was a contestant. They had to make an alcoholic dessert. She nailed it despite not being able to taste it. When she mentioned that she couldnt (not as a complaint or excuse) everyone gawked at her and someone said “how old are you???”. Like, really?

Shane Madej really is the funniest possible co-host of a mystery show because he's just like. some things will remain a mystery forever and that's fine. but like who started the idea that fanfiction writers are somehow bothered by enthusiasm for their work???? cause i see posts all the time like “do writers really want to talk with us about their fics? Do writers really want long comments? I dont want to bother them” and i just think its absolutely ridiculous????

ofc i want to talk to you about it, and would love to hear you go on about it. i took time out of my real life to write this stuff down so we could all share these characters!!! the idea that you’re bothering a fanfiction writer, a fellow nerd, is absolutely crazy

Personally I attribute at least part of this to the shift of fandom onto Tumblr platform. Because of the way Tumblr works, multiple replies and reactions can get cluttered and overwhelming really fast, so leaving replies and feedback can be awkward. I have actually seen ‘tumblr etiquette’ posts going around scolding people for adding commentary onto posts when they reblog it! Actually discouraging  people from reacting and adding their own words!  If any of this attitude spills over onto fanfic posts and reblogs, no wonder readers are shy about adding their own words to an author’s posts.

WE, THE AUTHORS, REALLY WANT TO HEAR YOUR COMMENTS.

Also, what gives with most comments on AO3 drying up like 72hrs after posting a chapter or a fic? Idk if it’s the whole social media thing of it not being cool to interact with posts or tweets that are ‘old’. But let me just say, categorically, that it does not apply to fics. 

If you’re reading my story weeks or months after I’ve posted it, I would still love to hear from you. 

I leave comments on stories that are YEars old, but they’re new for me. And the authors who reply are thrilled to get a ping about an old fic, and love to share about how their writing style or their HCs have evolved since then. 

So, dear Reader, I’ll love you for:

1) commenting 

2) commenting enthusiastically and at length 

3) commenting on every chapter 

4) commenting on ‘old’ work.

And even if you don’t do any of that, and you just enjoy my fic silently lurking in the shadows, I’ll still love you.
