Al-Idrisi's world map made for Roger II of Sicily in 1154 CE (Kitab Rujar or Tabula Rogeriana), from 'Alî ibn Hasan al-Hûfî al-Qâsimî's 1456 copy. Note: South is at the top of the map.
Al-Idrīsī—also rendered as Al Idrissi, Edrisi, or Sharif Al Idrissi Sebti—whose full name was Abu ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs al-Qurṭubī al-Ḥasanī al-Sabtī (Arabic: أبو عبد الله محمد ابن محمد ابن عبد الله ابن ادريس القرطبي الحسني), and also known as Dreses, sometimes nicknamed “the Arab of Nubia,” was an Andalusian Arab explorer, geographer, botanist, and physician, born around the year 1100 in Ceuta, then part of the Almoravid Empire.
He was raised in Morocco and al-Andalus, studied in Córdoba under Almoravid rule, explored much of the Mediterranean, and also travelled in Europe. He is believed to have died around 1165 or 1175, either in Sicily or in Ceuta. He belonged to the Idrisid sharifian lineage.
Al-Idrīsī owes his renown to the creation of one of the earliest known geographical maps and planispheres of the world, as well as to his authorship of a descriptive geographical work entitled Kitāb Nuzhat al-Mushtāq (“The Book of Pleasant Journeys for Those Who Long to Traverse the World”), also known as Kitāb Rujār (“The Book of Roger”). Composed at the request of Roger II, the Norman king of Sicily, this work illustrates and comments upon a great silver planisphere constructed by al-Idrīsī. It was commissioned by Roger II, who sought a comprehensive representation of the known world of his time.
i can understand the trials but were the tribulations really necessary
The thing about how you will talk like a tumblr user for the rest of your life is that usually people won’t clock it but sometimes you’ll meet someone and you’ll actually be able to see a look of painful recognition in their eyes when you say some tumblypoo bullshit while everyone else just thinks you had an epic original thought. And it’s gonna make you a little bit sorry you were born
Why does my dad text like this??? Who taught him this??
*puts you in a situation*
this cannot keep happening
i think i tend to forget how good boredom is for creativity because we're all so addicted to numbing ourselves with screens and stimulation. but standing in the shower or going for a walk with no music or just sitting in your bedroom without being allowed to touch any screens & all of a sudden i have multiple new projects to start, a solution to a months-long plot problem & 4 new original characters
