The FF7 Exchange works are out!
And mine amongst them. You might be surprised to find out I chose a Barret prompt, but I really did enjoy it. The prompt was basically Barret and hydroelectric power -- taking things post meteor and being a bit more in character than having the man who bought the story that mako was clean energy and pushed a whole community in for it... and sending him searching for oil.
Hopefully my recipient likes it. Here we go:
After the World Didn't End (a FF7 fanfic)
Summary: What do you do, when the world you knew is over and you’re still there?
EXCERPT:
Barret considered that, then came over to kneel with Marlene. “You okay with that, baby? If I go for a little while?”
Marlene took his hand, little hand curling around a finger as she considered it. “Okay. Do you want to take a cookie to the kitty’s person? Mr. Reeve wasn’t scary.”
Barret was pretty sure that if the Turks had told Reeve to scare her, little girl or not, he’d have done it because it was his neck on the line and she wasn’t his baby. Just like Barret would have done anything he could and some things he shouldn’t to protect her.
He was… not at peace with it, but he understood the nuances better. He got it. He didn’t have to like it.
“Alright, sweetie, I’ll take a cookie to Mr. Reeve,” Barret said, and when she scampered off he knelt by Cait Sith. “Now what’s this about, Cat?”
“In Reeve’s old job, he did a lot of infrastructure,” Cait Sith said. “While everyone else was tearing things down, he was building things and managing the power grid. O’course, there’s not the same resources now… but he’ll make do, he always does. And!”
Cait Sith hopped and spun in the air, pointing at Barret when he landed neatly in front of him. “You can help!”
“Really.” Barret felt himself smile despite his misgivings. “And what help do you want of ol’ Barret?”
“Reeve can run a board room,” Cait Sith said. “But a city hall is different, ye ken?”
I'm really proud of this one, adding a new character to my repertoire. Do enjoy.
