One thing I like in ALBW is how both Link and Zelda seem like the picture perfect depictions of a Ruler and a Hero, Wisdom and Courage, yet their relationship with one another is very distant. Link gets to know Hilda more than he gets to know Zelda.
In turn Ravio and Hilda look much less perfect, but they are much closer with one another prior to the main events of the game, and I like how personal everything feels with those two. There’s a lot more emotions involved, which makes it more messy, but makes them feel less like idealistic fairytale roles and more like people. I really like it
also jumping off from that last post and the symbolism of the sages + zelda being turned into paintings specifically. the way this is such a juicy detail for those cutscenes with hilda musing to the painting of zelda and her characterisation overall
you have hilda, in a dark room, the grief of a dying kingdom that's been dying since before she was alive to watch it crumble upon her shoulders. talking over her plans, watching link's progress and ruminating. and she is literally standing there and staring at the representation of everything she is not. this bright, beautiful painting of a princess from a prosperous kingdom of light and joy and happiness. has never faced hardship, has always had whatever she needed. impa stays strong by her side, her sages happy, her soldiers devout. and she stands there and asks this image of zelda questions. how nice it must be, how lucky she is. how cruel it is, that hyrule gets all this amazing power, and lorule is left to crumble
and i think, it's quite significant that this is hilda's view of her. all she sees is her own pain contrasted with the image of someone who seemingly has never faced anything like it. and zelda is privileged, and hyrule peaceful - but there is no king nor queen, no mother or father, just young zelda alone in the castle with impa and her soldiers. and the zora attack on sight, regardless of link's personal kindness to their queen - there is something that they are afraid of, and must fight on instinct to defend from
but zelda being this static, unfree presentation of herself does not allow her to do anything to change hilda's opinion. she is an unwilling participant in this conversation about her, hilda projecting all of her feelings, her view of things, onto her.
now we the audience, know, as the ending clearly shows, were she free she would meet hilda in all of her colours, all of her actions, and she'd take one of kindness herself. she would offer the opportunity for change. but hilda doesn't know that. all she sees is this picture she's painted herself of the perfect princess
and thus, hilda remains ruminating. alone, in the dark, counting down the dungeons until her evil plan can be finally enacted, and her kingdom saved with the dooming of another. staring at everything she could never be
i think one of my favourite things about zelda and hilda's potential dynamic is that i think hilda wishes zelda were a person she is not. hilda wants to hate her, but she is kind. wants to spit in the face of her pity, but knows she needed it. wants to dig her heels in and say this is my kingdom and i wouldve saved it, but she didnt save it, she couldnt. it was zelda that did, even when she didnt have to. even when she couldve felt the same anger hilda did, the same grief for what transpired hilda did, and taken that anger and directed it to her. that's what hilda wanted. thats what she expected. its why they trapped her in a painting - to stop her from interfering. but she didnt - she helped. gave hilda what she really wanted: lorule healing
but that also means that if zelda, not a painting, not a static image of privilege and (perceived) selfishness, but a person, has the power to change or do things you didnt expect, that means hilda does too. and that means she must face her mistakes, and the mistakes of those that came before her, that which defines her - and she must grow from that too. something that is more difficult and scarier than any plot to kill another kingdom for your own
it's terrifying to look in the mirror and see the ways youve fucked up. its terrifying to make that first step to do so. and i think it would be so much worse if the hypothetical better-from-the-start version of you was watching you do it. ever so kindly. ever so understanding. itd be easier if zelda wasnt so kind. itd be easier if hilda didnt have to change in the first place
but i think hilda wouldnt be able to stop herself from wanting to bask in zelda's light

anything u think about YOUR life after 10pm is bs to be ignored. anything u think about a character’s life after 10pm should be posted about online and expanded on for paragraphs. :)
Hey dude. Couldn't help but notice that the peaceful backing music cut out when you fixed me with a glare uncharacteristic of the traits we've seen you display so far. What was that all about.

(some guy on the internet voice) it's so unrealistic and forced when women win fights against men in stories. of course, when a young boy defeats a huge man I'm cheering and screaming because it is so badass, and when a frail old man defeats a cocky young warrior I feel nothing but satisfaction. I love these power fantasies about easily dispatching people who underestimate you, a thing I desire despite the fact that I will likely never have the skill to achieve it in real life, but I'm pretty sure women don't have that same desire, and even if they do, they shouldn't get to see it in media. because it's so unrealistic, you see. I mean I'm smart enough to know I can't take down a big man in a fight but the women, you know, they'll get ideas. I could probably do it if I trained hard enough, but the women??? for some reason I can't see it happening, and who can say why that is.
