While the ending is certainly a tragic denouement, I think it's a mistake to interpret it as without hope or as pure nihilism. Part of my reasoning is because the bookshop at the end of the universe was initially a scene in GO2; it's in the concept art, so it seems to have been removed relatively late in the writing process. This is where the story has been going since at least 2021. The other part of this is: Dickens.
Dickens is a master of finding hope and humor in the absurd cruelty and ambivalent bureaucracy of humanity. It's not a random choice that he's called out in the script, both in GO2 and the finale.
There are two books mentioned - A Tale of Two Cities and Bleak House. Both end with a redemptive death, and hope, and with the deceased character's legacy being honored by a child with his name getting to live a good and happy life, the life he should have had.
In the former, Sydney Carton goes to the guillotine in the place of another man, and muses on his sacrifice:
"I see Barsad, and Cly, Defarge, The Vengeance [a lieutenant of Madame Defarge], the Juryman, the Judge, long ranks of the new oppressors who have risen on the destruction of the old, perishing by this retributive instrument, before it shall cease out of its present use. I see a beautiful city and a brilliant people rising from this abyss, and, in their struggles to be truly free, in their triumphs and defeats, through long years to come, I see the evil of this time and of the previous time of which this is the natural birth, gradually making expiation for itself and wearing out. I see the lives for which I lay down my life, peaceful, useful, prosperous and happy, in that England which I shall see no more. [...] It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known."
Bleak House is more explicitly relevant to the finale: the antepenultimate chapter is literally titled "Beginning the World," which is used as a metaphor for redemption, forgiveness, and death:
“I have to begin the world. [...] I will not begin it in the old way now,” said Richard with a sad smile. “I have learned a lesson now, sir. It was a hard one, but you shall be assured, indeed, that I have learned it." [...] “I have done you many wrongs, my own. [...] You will forgive me all this, my Ada, before I begin the world?” A smile irradiated his face as she bent to kiss him. He slowly laid his face down upon her bosom, drew his arms closer round her neck, and with one parting sob began the world. Not this world, oh, not this! The world that sets this right.
While I don't totally agree with the terminus of the television story within the context of the message of Good Omens: The Book, we've been on this road a long time. The philosophy of Dickens is part of the DNA of Good Omens: TV Edition. And that's simply not a philosophy of nihilism.
coming online as someone who liked the finale
A missing scene. Thanks for all the fanart and fic throughout the years, you guys
I just. They survive the destruction of the book of life. They survive the end of the universe. The universe ends and they persist and become unified in the backbone of a new one. And even when God says they will vanish too they persist again and again and again. Every lifetime is theirs. Every story. They have so many blank pages to fill. I have a hard time viewing that as a death. And even if it was. They got to choose what they wanted. They got to make a world and an existence for the people they loved without having to manage the weight of either side pulling on each other. They were truly given free will and they used that to give that gift to others. And I just. Can't be sad about that.

this is by far not the most important thing about good omens or aziraphale and Crowley to me but holy SHIT has it done wonders for my body image. I was talking to my mom about body issues and it got me wondering what I even do when I feel bad about my looks and my brain went oh right. I think of aziraphale. Who incredibly loved by crowley just for who he is and what he looks like.
Like I said I love these two for many reasons but realizing that they managed to almost kill the voice in my head that tells me I’m ugly and unlovable was just. Ugh. It makes me love them even more.
(and the fandom, tbh. So many people are so positive about azis body in fics and fanart and it is so fucking GOOD to see)
also, to quote the book,
"For those of angel stock or demon breed, size, and shape, and composition, are simply options."
so, aziraphale most likely chooses to continue to look the way he does (even if his corporation was assigned to him the way it is now), and therefore probably enjoys it
Fanfiction Jargon Study
Hey y'all! So I know I haven't posted much lately BUT college has been crazy. And related to that, for one of my classes I'm doing a study on the relationship between time within the greater fandom community and understanding of fanfiction-related jargon. Below I have the link to the survey which will just have three multiple choice questions relating to your relationship to fandom and then a list of 15 terms to define if you know them.
Please reblog this or otherwise share the survey link with anyone you think might be interested so I can have as large of a sample size as possible for this. The form will be open until April 24th.
Thank you all so much!
(and yes, I will post the data when I get it all collected for all you fellow nerds)
A survey to determine the relationship between the understanding of fandom jargon and the time one has been in the fandom community

in superman adventures #19, there’s a villain named multi-face who can convincingly disguise himself as anyone, even tricking dna tests and x-ray vision. Superman initially can’t stop him
and the only reason he gets caught is because multiface decides to disguise himself as, of all people, CLARK KENT i’m screaming
why do villains always mess up so badly

This bullshit needs to get into the movies, not edgy-grimdark shit
I especially love the fact that, in many depictions, Bruce Wayne somehow ended up looking similar enough to the one Kryptonian on Earth that they can Parent Trap people
*Deathstroke bursts into the Legion of Doom headquarters* “Guys, you won’t believe this, but I think Bruce Wayne is Superman!“
today I learned that Clark Kent is sloppy drunk and I am in eternal gratitude for that

This coming out just days after it was revealed in the Jeffrey Epstein email dump that powerful people manipulated American and British news, political figures and forums to push transphobia to distract from people looking at their child abuse ring.
This includes chief anti-Corbyn-ite in Labour Peter Mandelson, directly feeding anti-trans stories to UK and US newspapers, actively bullshiting "biological studies" that trans people are idk ontologically evil (we have proof of Epstein pitching this exact thing), and creating /pol/ and then feeding anti-trans conspiracy theories for years until it all boiled over.
And over and over we found out each plank of this argument was rotten from the start but people are choosing to keep the bigotry.
Findings suggest physical performance in trans women converges toward that of cis women over time
