This is why I love the “Covid is faked” conspiracies. Like really?? You think the WHOLE WORLD is working together THAT EFFICIENTLY?? Even the countries that hate each other? Wow cheers for the optimism
Look up the manhattan project you dipshits
You mean the project where the only reason there was any secrecy was that none of the people had any part of the wide reaching project (Oppenheimer, Einstein, and all the others were pretty much kept way away from eachother) and was almost brought down as a secret in the group by one of the guys being an amateur safe cracker? That Manhattan Project?
The one where everybody near Los Alamos knew that something big was happening, because they were actively hiring during the War?
The one that had so many close calls to they’re working on some kind of bomb that by the time the war was over you had people involved blabbing, to the point the Rosenbergs happened?
THAT Manhattan Project?
The Manhattan project, the one that the editor of a science fiction magazine (I think it was Astounding) figured out was happening because all the physicists who subscribed suddenly changed their addresses to Los Alamos?
That Manhattan project?
We’re talking about the Manhattan project that Kodak had clearance to know about (and even got advanced warnings about tests) because they figured it out when radioactive fallout from the tests contaminated their x-ray film? That one?
And that was still just one government using the fullest extent of their power to try and keep just one secret in a time before cellular phone cameras or the internet. Imagine thinking multiple, rival governments agreed to fake a virus to fool just some of their citizens into staying home from work, while also agreeing to pay billions of dollars to compensate them for it.
They couldn’t even pull off Goncharov in 1973
Dear Aleve:
Dear Aleve: do you not grok that your 'who do you take it for?' series of ads are The Bleakest And Most Dystopian Thing Ever??
Check out Aleve's 15 second TV commercial, 'Not Yet' from the OTC: Pain Relief industry. Keep an eye on this page to learn about the songs
If the Video's not working, the tagline is "When pain says 'It's time to go home go home' I say 'Not yet' .... "Aleve. who do you take it for?"
...I mean if I'm in pain presumably I'm taking pain killers because I don't want to be in pain. But no, Aleve says that I should be taking it so that I can continue toiling at my second job, to provide for my loved ones. Aleve: take it so you can labor more!
What the fuck… netflix only pay in full once a show reaches season 3? And by rebooting daredevil and restarting it as season 1, Disney+ can get away with not paying the crew in full
uh that literally answers why they have a three season model that literally writers never knew about because netflix alway pulls the rug from under them, their fucking greed has always been their business model, there’s no saving that company
This is true. It’s a product of how screenwriting is negotiated with the writer’s union. The longer you stay on a show, the higher your pay, and the more you have stake/ownership (like getting a producer credit, and the associated benefits/pay). Different networks/streamers negotiate with the unions different ways, but there are some basic standards they can’t get out of.
It’s the same kind of wiggling around these contracts to make sure the good pay and control stays with an elite few (who are often more business than creative) that makes so many breakout original network shows that have a stellar first season get a terrible second season.
They take young new talent and throw a little bit of money at ‘em like investing in a broad array of startups. We’ll try three new lawyer/cop shows, a doctor show, a teen drama, a spooky procedural, a serialized thriller, a wholesome family comedy this season. One of them is a smash hit.
If the show is renewed and that young new talent stays on the show, the union says they get a raise and some level of creative control.
So they fire them, bring in the old guard to take those credits and raises, and the old TV money guys don’t know how to write the premise for shit and don’t understand the show. Cue season 2 of Sleepy Hollow or whatever.
Unions are good but the constant consolidation of power is gonna try find loopholes every time.

They’re the lyrics to the song Dragostea Din Tei by Moldovan pop group O-zone. It was a very popular song in the early 2000s
We’ve finally reached the point where the old memes are too old for today’s generation… Fs in the chat.
For any wretched zoomers…one of the original viral videos aka the finest of vintage memes
We must not despair as long as we are here, we can teach the children about the ancient texts
Listen, kinderlach.
If you want to know how widespread a meme this was, I was in college when it was a thing. I was taking a women’s choir, as required by my major.
MY ENTIRE CHOIR CONVINCED OUR PROFESSOR THIS WAS A “ROMANIAN FOLK SONG” AND WE PERFORMED IT. LIVE.
We literally did it as a joke. Because we knew most of our audience would be students from other classes who were required to attend for a grade.
I will forever treasure the looks on the faces, ranging from outrage to pure unabashed glee, that popped up when we hit that first “maya hii, maya hu …”
This was back when a meme could go on for weeks, if not months or even up to a year. (Caramelldansen was around even longer than that, but Caramelldansen is up there with the Rickroll as the spiders Georg of the meme world.) It was still considered “current” nine weeks after we talked the prof into doing it. EVERYONE KNEW IT. It was the perfect prank.
I kind of wonder how many of the people who attended still remember this.
I am stunned to see this whole thread and not see the original meme video that really introduced this song to US audiences (or at least to everyone I know who was aware of it):
The oldest YouTube upload I can find has 48.8 million views at this time and is dated 2006 is because that’s when someone uploaded this video to YouTube because YouTube is younger than this video. The description to that upload says that a Guardian article FROM 2006 estimated that this video had been seen 700 million times at THAT time.
This video was passed around in emails and hosted on “homepages” and would take MINUTES to load. And it was worth every minute to see this young man, Gary Brolsma just fucking joyfully JAM OUT to this song (his upload of the video is embedded above to give him the views).
But dang, young folks, it took WORK to make something go viral in the Days of the Old Magic. Not just on the part of content producers (no one was a content producer yet, though) but also on the part of people sharing it. It was a wild, untamed time.
I’ve actually never even seen the official video before this thread. I love it. SO MUCH. I hope that John Ralphio knows how much whoever did the little animated segments is in love with him and I hope that the Tiny Twink knows how much whoever did the little animated segments hates him for existing so close to His Beloved John Ralphio. And also the other guy is there.
It’s incredible. Thank you for sharing that and bringing this joy back into my life.
I wish there was an equivalent to the “bitch you live like this?” image for boring minimalist spaces
A Betazoid character who isn't in a nurturing profession, but is a tactical officer.
"Captain, I sense they know they're about to get their asses handed to them"
Also, a Klingon character who is in a nuturing profession instead of tactical.
"You are a true child of Kahless for confronting your fears and I am honoured to have helped you."
Klingon therapist: the battle against mental illness cannot be won decisively. It is a long campaign against an enemy who never tires, whose forces swell to twice their size whenever you look away. Battle against a foe of such magnitude, who occupies your very mind… every moment you survive is a triumph against all odds. There is no more honorable combat.
...I love this.
one of the more valuable things I’ve learned in life as a survivor of a mentally unstable parent is that it is likely that no one has thought through it as much as you have.
no, your friend probably has not noticed they cut you off four times in this conversation.
no, your brother didn’t realize his music was that loud while you were studying.
no, your bff or S.O. doesn’t remember that you’re on a tight deadline right now.
no, no one else is paying attention to the four power dynamics at play in your friend group right now.
a habit of abused kids, especially kids with unstable parents, is the tendency to notice every little detail. We magnify small nuances into major things, largely because small nuances quickly became breaking points for parents. Managing moods, reading the room, perceiving danger in the order of words, the shift of body weight….it’s all a natural outgrowth of trying to manage unstable parents from a young age.
Here’s the thing: most people don’t do that. I’m not saying everyone else is oblivious, I’m saying the over analysis of minor nuances is a habit of abuse.
I have a rule: I do not respond to subtext. This includes guilt tripping, silent treatments, passive aggressive behavior, etc. I see it. I notice it. I even sometimes have to analyze it and take a deep breath and CHOOSE not to respond. Because whether it’s really there or just me over-reading things that actually don’t mean anything, the habit of lending credence to the part of me that sees danger in the wrong shift of body weight…that’s toxic for me. And dangerous to my relationships.
The best thing I ever did for myself and my relationships was insist upon frank communication and a categorical denial of subtext. For some people this is a moral stance. For survivors of mentally unstable parents this is a requirement of recovery.
feeling stuff
“whatever the fuck these two characters had going on” is a vastly underrated character dynamic

may have found the funniest possible thing ever in this essay on medieval sex laws im reading hold on
From Law, Sex, and Christian Society in Medieval Europe by James A. Brundage
I have many important things to do today so of course i spend 20 minutes making this medieval sex calendar
and worked out (very roughly) that your average medieval peasant in the year 1200 would be able to have sex about 73 days of the year. And that's on a LEAP year
Well 73 days of sex in the year 1200 is 73 more days of sex than I had in all of 2020 and half of 2021
@shredsandpatches is this the Medieval Sex Flowchart of Medieval Sex Flowchart Fic Fame!?
That’s the one!
I will say that the flowchart is a composite of a number of penitential manuals from the early middle ages; these rules weren’t really codified anywhere and the penitentials didn’t really have an official status (in fact, the Church tried to ban them a number of times), although penitential questioning was a real thing. By the later Middle Ages the concept of sex being forbidden on certain days of the week seems to have died out, although I think it was still technically banned during Lent and on major holy days, and foreplay was also deemed more or less acceptable. And of course there was no way to enforce any rules about sex unless people confessed to them; indeed, it doesn’t seem like people would generally have access to those rules outside of the confessional.
(In the fic I am gleefully throwing all that out the window because it’s mostly about my own issues)
And really, historical rules about sex do tell us more about the kind of people who wanted to write rules about having sex than they tell us about the people who were… you know… actually having sex.
Just as a very casual rule of thumb, if there’s lots of talk or a rule about not doing a thing, I assume that’s because people were doing it. If not, there’d be little need for a rule.

Two of my 8x10 prints that feature a similar design - both created in 2016. When I painted one, I thought I wanted to edit a couple things, so I painted the other. The mermaids and sharks differ quite a bit! Which one do you like better? (These are both in my shop)
