So I've been MIA for a while because I've been working/travelling in the US! I've had the amazing opportunity to see some beautiful shows and even go backstage on a few 😊 message me if you have questions!

Does anyone know if the adrenaline high you get after calling a really difficult show flawlessly is addicting?
Asking for a friend.
it’s an addiction I would self profess any day
I got this book today and I *LOVE* it. She has the same reason for my love of being on the crew
I need this book!
Children learning about technical theatre warms my heart.
eeeeee!!!!
HOW TO: Prep For A New Show
Things to have with you before you walk through that stage door; Mostly for us crew members.
Deodorant - Spray, and lots of it.
Gum - For all of that coffee.
A huge bottle of water - Let’s be real here.
Jeans - Comms do not stay on leggings, hear it from the leggings expert. Invest in some high quality black jeans or cargo pants for all of your theatre endeavours!
Torch - Trust me, you’re gonna need it.
Leatherman - Or any multitool. Helpful in every single possible way.
Tape - In all of its varieties, spike, electric, gaff. It will save you a whole lot of time.
Leather, enclosed shoes - I’ve found black Doc Martens to be the perfect show shoe. Others prefer black sneakers, work shoes or school shoes. People also love their steel capped boots. It’s all about personal preference, just have some good enclosed shoes.
A day diary - To pencil in all of those techs and performances. So helpful on the spot if people are speculating about the schedule.
A separate journal - I have a personal black moleskin notebook that I like to call my crew journal, a place to write down everything I’m learning. Tips, problems, printed out emails and schedules, photos and considerations. It’s my bible, ok.
Be prepared and hydrated, and enjoy your next show! xxx

I saw a “shoutout to the theatre kids” post that was only about actors and I felt left out so this is for everyone else (please add to this if you feel you haven’t been represented!!):
shoutout to the theatre kids that aren’t actors
to the stage managers who manage to balance friendships and being authoritative in rehearsals
to the technicians that do extra training in welding and access equipment and so many other things to make themselves more hireable
to the techs and stage management who just sometimes want to wear colour but are instead in show blacks all the time
to the stage managers who get stuck mediating the tension between directors and designers who are older and supposed to be more mature than you
to the techs who injure themselves, deal with it, and keep working (or are told they aren’t allowed and are so annoyed about it)
to the designers that have to compromise what they want because the director doesn’t like it or there isn’t enough time/budget/equipment
to the casual crew members who just like theatre and want to be involved but aren’t trying to make a career of it
to everyone who tries (and sometimes fails) to fit in friends and healthy eating during tech week
to everyone who has ever done a year-long unpaid (or barely paid) internship in the hopes that it will lead to a job opportunity
to everyone who has ever worked really hard on making/finding a prop only to have it cut in tech or dress
to the design assistants that have to figure out when and how to become designers in their own right
to anyone who has ever managed to avert a crisis backstage where there’s barely any light and you can’t talk
to anyone who has ever had to make the decision to stop the show because some crises just can’t be averted
to everyone who struggles to understand unions
and the list goes on and on
you’re all fucking amazing
Life 👌
hey! So I'm just starting to ASM and all that jazz, but I'm unfortunately starting this at the same time my dyslexia is starting to kick me in the face. Any suggestions on how I can read a (modified) script and know it like the back of my hand?
Hiya!! That’s so awesome (the ASMing part), the dyslexia is just a minor challenge that you’ll learn to overcome :DPossibly recording the script and listening to it? I used to use this technique in high school when I was learning lines - rather than having to rely always on the script. Alternatively try an app that reads it out to you?Going to rehearsals is always a good way to learn the script as well. You will be constantly hearing the dialogue which may help you follow along with the script. You will also be able to correlate dialogue to specific actions/gestures etc. an actor does when delivering the lines.
It depends on how much the dyslexia affects your reading ability,
It also depends on whether you do straight plays or musicals, with musicals it would possibly be a bit easier as you’d have a little bit of ease with the recordings.
You’re welcome to message me privately if you want to chat more, hopefully this advice is a little helpful? :)
Advice to actors - how to get management/designers to like you:
Actors take note.
Respect your Stage Managers because Stage Managers mean business.
A kid in the show I’m currently SMing was blatantly rude to me. He swore, refused to go into a small group rehearsal and has been reported to have been just as awful to other cast members.
Now I understand that you can be in a bad mood sometimes but never, and I repeat, NEVER, disrespect your Stage Manager. You shouldn’t be rude to anyone, but be aware that your SM has links to literally everyone who is working with you and has a great influence over who gets kept and who gets kicked. We know all of you, we know how you work, we know how you act and we sure as hell know how a rehearsal room is supposed to be run.
And if you do dare to be rude to the SM, be prepared to either be:
1) asked to pack up your crap and leave or 2) taste humble pie and be told to apologise to everyone you disrespected with the threat of being kicked out ever looming (luckily for the kid he had these options and chose this one!)
SMs don’t take crap from anyone. Heaven forbid you test one of us.
Summer Camp!!
Sooooooooo, I’m going on a summer camp in America this year to be one of the drama techs! eeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!!!! I cannot wait!!
An inside look at how set designer Mimi Lien created the set for The Great Comet of 1812 (x).
What a beautiful model box!
One of my favorite little backstage things is when people recognize someone else’s job as more important than their own and move the fuck out of the way.
Anticipated or not, we’ve all been there. You’ll be meandering back to the dressing rooms to rest your feet before the next scene when you see the prop runner bolting toward you. Turning, you instinctively hug the wall just as they fly past. You go on your way.
Or you have just descended the stairs when, “Fuck!” Before you know it you’ve turned around and every actor ascending to make their entrance pins themselves to the rail while you pound up the stairs. You accidentally bump into a guy on the way, but you both forget the encounter.
Or that moment every show when you step to the side with your arms out. Seconds later, an actress drops her prop in your hands as she dashes to her quick change.
It’s (usually) wordless, instead relying on bounding feet and focused eyes to communicate that their job is more important than yours in that moment. Knowing theatre is full of mishaps, we rarely follow up or know what it was about, but trust that it was all to serve the show.
Finding my voice
I’ve always struggled to show confidence in social situations, in particular within a large group of people. As I continue to work in theatre, I am slowly learning to be louder and present, however, still struggle with it.
If anyone has any advice, I would love some tips/pointers?
Opening night of The Dorwsy Chaperone and I’m so excited!!!!
Doing line notes for the first time and i just…. i ju- they’re terrible.
I am capable!
Don’t underestimate my strength! I may be a female; a small one at that and I do not have the strongest of muscles, however, that doesn’t mean I’m weak or incapable of doing physical labour.
I have had so many people question my strength in this last year and it disappoints me that we are still stuck in a place where females are considered weaker than males.
