What I want from Unrivalled is to see Shane's pure, unadulterated disgust at how content the Centaurs are with losing. I want him peripherally aware that they're happy with the fact that they lose less now than they ever have but repulsed that no one seems to be shooting for excellence, besides him and Ilya. I want an internal tally on the shots on goal that missed. I want overt frustration at teammates, regardless of whether they lack commitment or talent. I want someone missing a pass from him and Shane quietly seething. I want him internally attributing blame. I want him to be cataloguing his own teammates weaknesses. I want him angry. I want him fucking done. I want him to know his own excellence and I want him furious at the fact that even with the best two players in the league on their team, people do not seem to be stepping the fuck up. I want him running himself into the ground to try and pick up other people's slack. I want him expecting blood sweat and tears from everyone in return. I want him expecting sacrifice. Honestly, it bothers me so much that the whole “Jacob needs to fix Shane’s character because Rachel ruined him in The Long Game” argument always comes from people who say they love Shane, but then turn around and want to completely rewrite who he is just so they can enjoy him.

If you think Shane needs Jacob to “fix” him, that’s because you think there’s something wrong with him. You need Jacob to change his character so you can like him without having to deal with the parts of Shane you don’t agree with.

“Shane in The Long Game is out of character” — no, he isn’t. You just don’t like that he isn’t acting like the idealized version of him you created in your head. Characters don’t have to be perfect, make the choices you would make, or fit your idea of who they should be just so you can like them.

It makes no sense to say a character is “hated and misunderstood” while also needing to erase his canon personality in order to enjoy him. Like… do you actually like Shane, or do you just like the version of him you created?
