@lizziemeg
Itās in times like this that I go back to Briarās BookĀ by Tamora Pierce, since itās incredibly soothing to me. Itās basically a YA/Middle Grades book about an epidemic in a fantasy world, where we see the entire processāthe diseaseās origins and spread, the effect of social class and public infrastructure, attempts at containment, prevention, and treatment, and the struggle to achieve a diagnosis and cure, through the eyes of an 11-year-old plant mage whose teachers are the herbalists, healers, and administrators who tackle these tasks head-on.
Also a really great reminder that fantasy plots donāt need to be based around war and battle. The whole series is good for thatāthe characters are students in a temple based around education and public service; the troubles they encounter are usually natural disasters, cultural conflicts, or basic human ills, and violence isnāt glorified.
I just reread it for this reason. Itās an amazing book, if particularly haunting right now. And its rage against a class system that dispassionately kills the poor is astounding in a J fiction novel from 1999
I just got to the part where Frostpine is grousing because someone remembered that he can make charms to protect the ducal guard from a rain of rocks and chamberpots when they go from house to house checking for any cases of disease. He doesnāt want to make them.Ā āA proper fear of such things keeps soldiers polite. Otherwise they might be tempted to push common folk around. Orders to enter peopleās homes uninvited are a sore temptation to peacekeepers, Iāve found.āĀ
Crane, the aristocrat, asks him if he has any respect for proper order, and Frostpine says,Ā āDepends on whose idea of order it is.ā
DAMN STRAIGHT.
This book has one of my favorite passages of all time, about what makes sickness work tough to live through, when Rosethorn is talking about why she hates plagues:
āMost disasters are fast, and big. You can see everyoneās life got overturned when yours did. Houses are smashed, livestockās dead. But plagues isolate people. They shut themselves inside while disease takes a life at a time, day after day. It adds up. Whole cities break under the load of what was lost. People stop trusting each other because you donāt know whoās sick.ā
Is there a possibility/room for another "Origins" set in the next 5 years?
Thereās a possibility. What character would you all like to see in another Origins set?
Angrath, Tamyio, Garruk, Kaya, The WandererĀ
Do you have a topic you'd like to takk about or get feedback on?
What existing supplemental product would you most like to see another one of?
Unset 4, followed closely by more brawl (I know the 1st brawl decks arenāt even out yet, but Iām excited for them) and battlebond 2.

Yo..
Can i get a step by step on how to do this?
So far for me itās been something like:
1. Become aware of how and when you tearing yourself down.
2. Now that you can catch yourself doing it. Offer counters to the negative self talk. A really useful thing I read was to talk to yourself almost the way you would child. Gentle and patient. Even when they fuck up.
3. Take time to celebrate your small accomplishments. Youāve been attacking yourself for every little mistake. Apply that same fervor to the positive things in your life. Did the dishes even though you didnāt want to? Fuck yeah! Got up and took shower? YES!!! You are taking positive steps to feeling better. Celebrate it.
4. Make lists of things youāre good at/ like about yourself. The first time I did this the only two things in my list weāre that I liked my hair and I had good friends. It was start.
5. Donāt beat yourself up if you screw up steps 1-4. Itās counter productive. When I catch myself calling my self stupid for some mistake or other my response now is,āWe donāt talk to ourselves like that anymore. Whatās something constructive that could actually help solve the problem.ā
Most of the time that seems to work. Not always. But more and more Everytime.
I hope any of that made sense.
oh my goodness there are instructions!!
Omg I was doing this without knowing
Australia has started to test a network of drainage with mesh so that plastics and other pollutants do not reach rivers or sea.Ā
LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE U.S.
the funniest thing in the entire pirates of the caribbean series is definitely that one scene in At Worldās End where they have parlay but davy jones is part of it, and rather than have him stand in the shallows or something they get a big bucket of water and have in stand on it on shore
who thought of that idea? who thought āput davy jones in a bucket of waterā and had the guts to suggest it aloud? and then who wentĀ āhey that sounds like a great idea!ā
at some point someone told davy jones their idea was for him to stand in a bucket of water and he agreed to it
*stands majestically in a bucket*
ok but notice the trail of buckets behind him meaning he walked from the ocean through three other buckets of water before he got into the one hes standing in
Itās even funnier when you consider how he must have figured all this out in the first place.
Some folks are asking āwell, if he can avoid the no-dry-land curse simply by standing in a bucket, doesnāt that ruin his whole motivation?ā, but heās not on dry land here.
The parley takes place on a sandbar - which, for the unfamiliar, is a temporaryĀ āislandā of sand deposited by breaking waves, unconnected with the shore, that spends most of its time submerged, being exposed only at low tide.
What Jones is doing here is rules-lawyering his curse. Can you imagine the trial and error he must have gone through in order to determine that this would actually work?
āOkay, do islands count as dry land? How about parts of the shore below the high tide mark? Reefs? Shoals? What if I stand in a pool of water on a shoal? Does it have to be seawater, or will any water do? Does it have to be a natural tidepool, or can it be something artificial, like a bucket?ā
What I am saying is that there must have been a process.
Pretty sure that this implies that the reverse - a bucket of sand, floating on the water (big bucket with just a bit of sand), would qualify as dry land. Thatās absurd, so Iām pretty sure that his lawyer pulled a fast one over the curse governor.
It may be absurd, but the text of the film bears it out. Davy Jones can sense the presence of his heart while itās at sea, but not while itās on land (indeed, thatās why he buried it on land in the first place: to break his connection with it) - yet placing the heart in a simple jar of dirt conceals it from Jonesā awareness just as surely as burial on land does, even if the jar is on a boat at the time. Suitably prepared vessels filled with dirt absolutely count as dry land for the purpose of Jonesā curse.
Then the reverse should also be true. If he buried it in a jar of water, no matter how far inland it is, he would be able to sense it. So by this logic, any container of seawater counts as not dry land, ergo, the bucket is a perfectly viable loophole.
Not necessarily. Itās traditionally a lot easier to accidentally get whammied by a curse than it is to weasel around it - I figure thatās why heās using multiple layers of indirection here. Heās forbidden to set foot on dry land, but itās technically not dry land (itās a sandbar, a non-permanent landform exposed only at low tide) and he technically didnāt set foot on it (heās standing in a bucket of water). Itās entirely possible that either one of those things alone wouldnāt make the grade.
okay but this all raises one further, very important question: if itās specifically ādry landā heās forbidden from, what about wetlands. can Davy Jones fight you in salt marshes? can he throw down in a peat bog?Swamp Battle?
This is the quality content I come to Tumblr for.
could he step on land if his shoes are wet?
No matter how ridiculous PotC gets I will love it. Especially when it results in conversations like this
What if he crawls around on his hands and knees, with his feet raised slightly into the air? Can he walk on his hands? Can he ride around in a litter or a wheelchair?
can he be in a wheelbarrow?
What if he flies over dry land? Like in a hot air balloon, or in the claws of a giant bird?
What if heās carried by two swallows using a strand of creeper?
European swallows or African swallows?
this whole thread reads like a conversation between these two:
In fact im not entirely sure that it wasnāt their idea in the first place
Reblog to have something good happen at 1:42 tomorrow
I saw this before I left work last night and had a quiet hope, and today I checked my phone at about quarter to two, while I was still on my lunch break, and Iāve just got a job interview with the BBC next week
Iām not a big believer in anything much but Iām so happy holy shit. So like unrelated note but something real good happened to me at 1.42 today lol
fyi there is no such thing as āgetting back on trackā after the holidays because you were never āoff trackā you were simply living life because you are a human being and you deserve that

You have to admire her audacity, if nothing else.
Literally my favourite thing about Rogue One is that it makes the opening of New Hope so funny. Like, Vader has followed Leia from a planet he just blew up seconds ago and pursued her across the galaxy and then sheās just like:Ā āIām on a diplomatic mission to Alderaanā
Vader: Youāre a rebel. I just had a fight with your entire rebel fleet and followed you here. Straight from the rebels. Of which you are a part
Leia: *dramatic gasp* rebel? Me??? Ā I was just passing through. Diplomatically. Thought it was a five-space-ship pile-up or something going on thereā¦Ā
death star plans? on my alderaanian diplomatic mission? itās more likely than you think

Girls Scouts encounter Bigfoot the most frequently. Part of their oath is to keep him a secret because heās very kind and makes up 30% of their revenue due to his fervent love for thin mints.
As a Girl Scout leader, I am telling you that this is NOT true, and any former girl scout that says it is, should think about what they are saying and what oaths they may have sworn in the past
a Christmas movie I want to see
Itās very relaxed up at the North Pole ever since the top demands for toys changed from handcrafted to mass produced. Most of the elves are inĀ āqualify controlā these days (very important to check those video games for violence, yāknow), and Santa and Mrs. Claus are basically reindeer farmers most of the year.Ā
Then, in late autumn, Santa checks his list.Ā
He checks it twice.Ā
He checks it a third time, and then he calls Mrs. Claus over to the computer, because clearly heās messed something up and deleted something he shouldnāt have. Mrs. Claus waves him out of the chair, sits down, and starts checking the settings.Ā
She goes very, very still.Ā
