I really, really adore that Dante and Vergil are canonically the Sons of Sparda, because if we actually stop and take the reference more seriously, it becomes very interesting.

Sparta is historically remembered for producing some of the greatest warriors ever, but one of the most fascinating military concepts from ancient Greece was the Sacred Band of Thebes: an elite military unit formed, according to historical sources, by 150 pairs of male lovers (300 soldiers in total). The idea behind it was simple: a warrior would fight more fiercely and never retreat if the person he loved was fighting beside him and watching him. For the Greeks, emotional bonds, honor, shame, and devotion were real military strengths.

So yeah… hahaha, it’s actually really funny once you start connecting the dots. The “Sons of Sparda” are portrayed as practically unbeatable when they fight side by side, almost like a single unit rather than two separate people, and it makes me wonder how many little subtextual details people completely overlook.

I have to admit, the very first thing that came to my mind when I heard “Sons of Sparda” years ago was the movie 300, but looking deeper into Greek military symbolism and warrior culture honestly makes the whole thing even more interesting.
