A recent reddit post has woken up my sleeping will to brainstorm about the lands from Frontier’s Digiworld we have never seen in the anime, without getting any info about the writers, which makes me MAD, I agree with Op wholeheartedly. Yet, I admit it’s just incredible to let your fantasy run wild and just start from scratch, add to the utter nothingness whatever you want to add, create your own lore, do whatever you want also to satisfy some wishes Frontier never satisfied (mostly about the treatment of the Ancients).
The lands/areas in question are ironically the ones belonging to the types I love the most: Thunder, Wind, Water and, yeah, Earth. Just to mess around with other concepts I wanted to work on, I stopped thinking about the way I want them to look like for while, but now I’m so ready to jump into this, slowly but surely. My ideas are vague at the moment , but I do know I want them all to have something to do with their element.
Long post about me rambling about trash I could put in my stuff someday. Headcanons all thrown in the air. DO NOT TAKE ME SERIOUSLY. YOU NEVER SHOULD.
•I do know I want the Earth area, or whatever we want to call it, to own a desert, because one appeared in the movie and we have no idea where it could be lol. Moreover, we know Ancientwisemon’s library temple is located in the middle of a desert and it would be cool to put it in there, no matter if his type is Steel. In truth, it works like some kind of mirage and can appear in many places at once canonically, but since deserts and mirage are a synolon…Yeah, I will go with this concept.
I don’t like thinking every area has got type restrictions. Indeed, it would be amazing to connect some elements together. Like, if you based it on Egypt or Mesopotamia, you could give some lore to Shutumon, AncientSphinxmon and even Bolgmon since he was found in a pyramid. On the contrary, taking in account the way the Fire Area looks in the anime, it comes easy to picture it owning a volcano somewhere that would link it to the Ancient Vulcanusmon.
When it comes to this area, I’d love imagining it as a very tough zone placed at the extreme East in Digiworld, in which only specific digital creatures managed to get used to. Since they didn’t give such characteristics to the Fire Area, let’s make Earth a sort of Dark Area but in an opposite fashion: scorching Sun, terrible temperatures, bare signs of vegetation. Those who couldn’t do it either vanished in datas in the past or braced themselves for a travel to the North in search of healthy air and body of water. Of course the Earth Area would also have a patch of forest because earth is also life.
To be honest, I want to be mostly free with this imagination journey, not following the official map also because many spots have been erased by Lucemon. Yet, the desert idea came from this spot of…Endless nothingness (I can make it endless if want to 🔥), which I can see here, leading to some green and the sea.
I want to mostly base my headcanons on the temples Ravel showed on Twitter. They are so cool and it makes me LIVID Frontier never did something with it because Dark Area was the only thing they could care about after not even half of the series. Do not misunderstand me, Dark Area is cool but the other areas could have been as well….
• So the Water Area might be a lot of things, cool ones, honestly. We know Ancientmermaidmon’s temple is a Parthenon that has plunged in the sea depths. I’m not saying Water has to necessarily be the sea, but I …Kinda wish it was ahahah.
Especially now that we also have got Ryugumon, who protects a castle hidden in the sea depths as well like in the Ryugu-jo legend. I adore Ryugumon, ok, and she can fit in the Water Area very well if I wanted her to be there.
The beach island Frontier showed me is something I won’t settle for. I want a whole region in this world entirely devoted to water. Instead of mere trains, there are trains that can travel above water, there are railways built underwater like in the ending scene where Takuya jumps on those dolphins digimon. And why not??? Let’s imagine Trailmons that are actual boats instead???
Most cities are built near to rivers or on the sea, and you want to bet that I wouldn’t throw in a venetian-like city totally randomly?? Indeed, frankly, I would enjoy dividing this area in two parts: one orientating itself in the direction of the sea, a mix of greek and italian inspos; another that resembles Amazon forest, with a long river tracing the whole path to the ocean, and an extremely rainy weather also reminding Japan’s rain season.
Moreover, since the Athlantis reference is clear in Ancientmermaidmon’s temple (but since I have power I can throw more) .I want to headcanon it being the most ancient Area along with the Earth one, the one with the richest history and the densest amount of myths. Just like the Fire Area seemed to be like in part, the Digimon living here are very “religious “ and superstitious. Since Ancientmermaidmon can destroy whole islands by making them drown, Digimon from here, who don’t know where her temple is, built another one to venerate her, existing in the perpetual fear another Flood will destroy everything again. Mind you, this is the ending Venice risks to experience sooner than you think.
Water area, water area…Ranamon…To complete water in all its forms, there should be a swamp too, similar to the one from Princess Tutu. Swamps look like that in my mind at this point ahaha. I drew a swamp once tbh, no twice, in truth, but I placed it in an Amazon-like environment, what a coincidence, so maybe it would just be a big primordial soup and that’s it ahahahh.
• When I think about the Thunder Area, I can’t help thinking about a single scenario and this said scenario is Valhalla, or Finland or Norway. You get me. A zone in Digiworld Digimon had to seriously grit their teeth to live in, refining their technology thanks to Earth area’s Digimon, who might actually be into craft…? Grottemon is into craft like a mix of Hephestus and nordic dwarves. They had to come up with special building structures to protect not only themselves but also the land from continuous lightnings falling everywhere and making this place inhospitable. Since in a legendary past Ancientbeatmon noticed there could be a healthy, cooperative balance between technology and nature, observing how these digimon managed to turn a waste land into a paradise of green, He turned high mountains into the guards of this place. They say some have tried escalating the highest mountains to never return, as there still are some limits you shouldn’t challenge.
Taking in account Ancientbeatmon rests in a big hole lost in a forest, one thriving with bug digimon can’t be missing. Nordic forests are magnificent, but show their beauty only to those who venture in them with good intentions.
This tunnel is so pretty, I’m so in love ,oh my God
• Lastly, Wind Area. Ok, listen this is hard. Ancient Irismon’s temple is said to be hidden in the clouds and ,seriously, I think it’s amazing and could have played so well with a Laputa-like plot. Fantasizing some Digimon used to live in the Thunder Area but used their technology to reach that sky lightnings came from. A Babele tower reference is tempting me here.!Thunder Area sounds like a disaster and I don’t mind it actually being the most problematic region of them all, with a past even more thraumatic than the one of rhe Water are, because technology will also be exploited in wrong ways by those who learn how to refine it, no matter what. Some are said to build a tower challenging the height of those mountains and grab lightnings and the voice of thunders; others, after having assisted to that punishment but still being fascinated by the perspective and tales from Bird Digimon made their technological skills evolve to build an island in the sky, whether it’s Laputa or Aristophanes’ birds island called Utopia.
But the fact is that a Laputa does exist in Frontier and it’s in the movie. So…I’m not against making the Wind area exist in a differet way from wyhat we imagine. It’s not something stable. It’s in the sky it represents and it constantly moves like the clouds, the turmoils, the winds, the flying digimon that are part of its’.
If my trash had been a rewrite, I would have gladly changed all the other Areas, also to fit the dominant mythologies present in their respective element’s line. An indian Fire land would have driven me crazy…With Shambala wanting to make Susanoomon resurrect, I do not have hope for anything but if a Digimon Story game ever ends up giving FLESH to the other areas and the Frontier Digiworld in general, just like they are doing for Ilyad, I would be so happy tbh.
For now, I will play with my favourite elements by giving them love in the most random ways. I find it sad my favourite elements were left out, but it’s probably better because I’m sure they would have lacked flavour. Frontier’s worldbuilding is AMAZING, but the way it just ignored the Ancients and their veneration, the history behind this wonder is unforgivable.
PSA Do not take me seriously. Again, I’m just playing.
