Had a liveblog forgotten in my drafts from I watched season 1 of Ted Lasso back when the final episodes of the series was airing. The tldr was I liked season 1 but what I found the most engaging was the Rebecca and Keeley relationship, so hearing the drama of how the show ended I didn’t bother continuing.

But I did screenshot one of my favorite shots of season 1 (1x06) is when Ted is upset and to add emphasis to this not being the norm the camera does this great Dutch angle to show the tension and unease.

Doing a free trial of Apple TV for the household currently, so I’ve been seeing parts of season 2 and 3, the only episode I sat all the way through was the s2 Coach Beard bottle ep which was a great episode especially the cinematography.

The romantic triangle between Keeley, Jamie, and Roy bored me: it’s mostly healthy relationships that communicate (compared to Jane/Beard), about them growing as people so they can be independent and not need 1 person to be emotionally vulnerable to. A triangle poly relationship would have been fun to watch, but I think the show would have fucked it up in the same way Keeley’s s3 job plot was a mess.

RIP Anthony Head I didnt realize the first time I watched s1 that Giles from Buffy was Rupert the “villain” of the show but him and Nate (sorta) being basically the villains of s3 didnt quite land for me. I think its down to the difference between the show’s optimistic tone vs irl some people are just shit and will exploit people’s mental health or weaponize personal info but theres no nice and neat redemption arcs assuming they even think they did something wrong. It’s been interesting seeing the discussion of it online though.

I guess I’ll watch s4 like I watched the other seasons when it comes out since it’s during my free trial but idk why it’s being made other than money, by the end of s3 it seemed like the writers had run out of interesting things for the characters.

Things have gotten so P.C. nowadays that you can't even call a forklift a forklift. Suddenly, every piece of "power lifting equipment" in your shop needs a special name. Even the mutant bullshit like telehandlers don't want to be called something cool like zoom-booms anymore.

The other day, the intern and I are out at Subway. Van saying "lift trucks" comes by. Picture on the side? You guessed it. Forklift.

"Skip," my intern explains - I don't like to be called boss, and he's nice and doesn't do that - "that's what the manufacturers want us to call them now. A forklift is too reductive, obscures nuance. Imagine if you had a huge shop full of these things, you'd need to know the difference between a reach truck and a stacker."

He makes an excellent point, which I admit by silently chewing on my Mesquite Chicken Power Bowl. I have ordered it meticulously, in order to accommodate my unique dietary needs. Some people think that's unimportant, and I should just get one of the combos and not explain myself to the Sandwich Artist every time. They're wrong, it's critical that I be recognized for who I am. Safer for everyone, too.

Even though it draws so much embarrassment when I misname the things, I just can't get over how every forklift insists on its own special name. My grandfather never had to put up with that kind of nonsense. He'd just get out there in the morning, lift up a car with whatever he had on the jobsite, and steal the catalytic converter. Then he'd go to the bar, and sob in the bathroom for a couple of hours at home by himself without ever explaining to any of us what was going on. Probably saw all this coming.

there’s a specific kind of stupidity to the deception arc when you remember that obi-wan’s the commanding officer of the open circle fleet, which is apparently the majority of the republic’s navy and includes the task forces of most major jedi generals including yoda, like obi-wan’s not just the jedi general of the 212th, he’s everyone else’s commanding officer. in terms of the GAR he’s supposed to outrank most jedi generals we see on the show, including several other jedi masters on the council, it’s a position that’s a lot closer to darth vader’s supreme commander of the imperial military bullshit than it is, like, anakin just being the general of the 501st legion.

obi-wan, for all intents and purposes, is their war. he’s the dude organizing what’s clearly their most powerful forces, and they intentionally let him be the one to very publicly die, like that wouldn’t be a major opportunity for the separatists to take advantage of the confusion? my going theory about the clone wars is that almost no one knew what they were doing if they couldn’t email obi-wan about it, but obi-wan can’t answer 5,000 emails in a day, and that’s why every decision everyone made is garbage cans

As fond as I am of TCW, this is why I have never viewed it as canon and never will. To me, it’s clear that SO many of the episodes and arcs are intended more as ‘what if’ scenarios or as meta commentary on the saga. While there are some aspects I love and find entertaining (even the arc in question contains some of my top fave Snips and Skyguy moments), there’s also far too much that is just plain ridiculous, and often in a way that breaks the fourth wall. I honestly have no idea how people can just accept the entirety of it as 100% canon. In fact, the only reason I was ever able to enjoy the series at all was because it never even occurred to me to see it as canon in the first place.

yknow I'm feeling a bit brave so I will venture to say what this blighted essay's pitch actually is: reading project hail mary (novel and film) as a ravishment fantasy. in both main threads of the narrative grace is brought wildly out of his element and pulled into the orbit of a mysterious foreign stranger who is significantly stronger / richer / more powerful than him, forced to accept unsolicited lavish gifts and personal praise despite protests and discomfort, and made to live in isolated locations in extremely close proximity to these people with no say in the matter, all of which are common motifs in ravishment fantasies. on her own, stratt also brings in other common motifs of restraints, drugging, being above the law, multiple kidnappings (I'm doing crazy things with the classical definition of "rape" as in "abduction" and its shared etymology with "rapture" as in "being taken to the heavens"), and the very specific yet still common motif of "otherwise trustworthy partner goes too far and doesn't take 'no' for an answer." rocky on his own brings in the overprotective flavor common to a lot of dark romance novel heroes, i.e. "I make sure you sleep and I like to watch you while you do it, I make sure you eat enough even if you've got baggage about it, I make inhuman displays of strength when you're injured, and as long as I'm around I'll make sure nothing bad ever happens to you ever again."

the issue I was running into with researching this a few weeks ago is that almost all of the scholarly writing on the content of people's forced-sex fantasies focuses solely on women's fantasies and starts with the research question of "why would women enjoy imagining such a horrible misogynistic thing?" despite surveys often showing that men have force-fantasies (where they are the one being forced) at very comparable rates to women. my hypothesis for a bit was "either men's fantasies are exactly the same as women's or they're completely different in [x] way," which was disproven interestingly when I did finally find something about men's force-fantasies: in content they are almost exactly the same as women's fantasies but the emotional motivations are often different in [y] way, which I hadn't expected. and [y] also super applies to my buddy ryland, perhaps even more than my original [x] hypothesis.

my hopes for writing this are twofold: a) to address the question I sometimes see phm audience members come away with of "if grace likes his life by the end and doesn't seem that mad about all of that, is the message supposed to be 'violation of bodily autonomy is good, actually?'", and b) to lightly resist one of the prevailing notions in the study of forced-sex fantasies, that ravishment fantasies are solely abstracted and fantastical and pleasurable and are completely 100% separate from fearful paranoid imaginings of / flashbacks to realistic sexual violence.

oh also: the most common interpretation of why people have ravishment fantasies is that it allows the fantasist to disavow a desire they feel ashamed of because, in the fiction of the forcing, they don't *want* it at all, they're being made to do whatever it is and can't be considered at fault. as I allude to in my final paragraph of the original post, I think it's a tad more nuanced, but there's definitely a lot of truth to that. grace can tell stratt that he's not smart or important or capable or brave or selfless enough to do what she wants, but she'll ignore it, make him do it anyway, and kit him out with skilled staff members and expensive lab equipment and coffee just the way he likes it. it's a fantasy of being respected and heroic and good whether he likes it or not.

with rocky, the fantasy is of being forced to be loved and protected. rocky decides to initiate contact, he decides that he's moving into the hail mary, he decides that he's always going to watch grace sleep even if grace says he doesn't need it, he decides to gift grace the fuel to get home even when grace pretends he doesn't want it, and he decides he's not going to let grace die to save him even when grace says he's made his choice. the two scenarios allow grace to experience the rewards of being selfless without needing to be so gauche as to ever say he thinks he's that good of a person AND to experience the rewards of being selfish without saying he thinks he deserves to be cared for.

The 6 Stages of Villain Grief

Villains die. this is a natural part of writing fiction. However, sometimes a large or long-running media franchise kills off one of their big name, popular villains and then regrets it. These are the stages such a franchise might go through in the aftermath, a kind of writer's grief, mourning the loss of a great storytelling element.

There is no real progression here. These stages may appear in any order or even simultaneously.

Stage 1: A Clone in All But Name

A new villain appears with a suspiciously familiar personality, powers, and goals to the dead villain, but with a different name and backstory. As they do not have the same history as the dead villain they often don't get any traction and are killed off quickly.

Stage 2: The Vengeful Sibling*

A brother or sister to the dead villain who was never mentioned previous to their death appears to take vengeance on whoever killed them, and/or they didn't actually care all that much and are just here to take over as the next big threat.

*Sometimes a different family member or an exceptionally faithful lackey instead

Stage 3: The Long-Lost Offspring

A son or daughter of the villain who was estranged from/hidden by/ kept secret from the dead villain shows up and becomes a major plot point. Often not evil, and likely to take a more anti-hero role, but if a villain may follow the same path as stage 2. Often used for either angst potential about their unwanted connection to their infamous parent or as an exploration of the nurture vs nature debate.

Stage 4: A Clone but Literally This Time

Someone has cloned the dead villain. The clone may or may not have the same personality or goals as the original, but they will have their appearance and powers. May be used as a lead up to stage 6.

Stage 5: The Pawn Swap

A new villain or villainous organization appears, and in order to take advantage of the dead villain's history and influence in the series a series of retcons are made to establish the new villains were really behind everything all along and the dead villain was just one of their pawns.

Stage 6: Fuck It Bring Them Back!

Somehow, the villain has returned.

my petty gripe about anachronism in historical/fantasy/spec-fic worlds is attraction language.

We’ve all heard the “should you use modern queer labels or not” argument but honestly even when people go “true, they wouldn’t use the labels ‘aromantic’ or ‘asexual,’” so often the characters describe their experiences as “I never felt romantic attraction” or “I don’t feel attracted to anyone” in ways that makes me go. You are stilllllll thinking about this in an extraordinarily modern online way. That 19th century steampunk detective man will NOT be angsting about having never felt romantic attraction, he would be angsting about being unable to feel moved by the beauty or charm of a woman, or something. And I do think that “attractiveness” language is different from the identity-level idea of experiencing attraction—Sherlock Holmes does not talk about not experiencing attraction, but when Watson says “What a very attractive woman!” Holmes responds “Is she? I did not observe.” (And then Watson calls him an inhuman automaton and calculating-machine and Holmes calls Watson’s judgement biased). Never swayed by the attractiveness of a man or woman, never desirous of marriage, never charmed by the delights of love, all of these feel like some of the variety of ways that someone in this milieu might describe an ace- or aro-spectrum identity more than “never felt attraction” does. Mostly because, like the terms for aromantic and asexual themselves, nailing down an exclusively attraction-based definition of a-spec identities is a relatively new and extremely post-AVEN thing. And yet in fiction everybody knows to articulate their experience as feeling sexual/romantic attraction. And I always want to go nooo how would THIS character think about it?? Not how you think this character SHOULD think about it, how would THIS person in THIS context articulate their feelings?
