Supergirl VS Captain Marvel (DC VS Marvel)
It's the duel between two super-strong, flying, blonde superheroes that will rock this world! Who's the better Danvers?
The connections between Supergirl and Captain Marvel are that they are both from rival comic book companies (DC and Marvel) and are blonde superheroines whose names are derived from their male predecessors (Superman and Captain Marvel). They both have alien physiology, have similar powers (enhanced strength, speed, and durability), and absorb some kind of energy to get stronger (specifically for Supergirl it's the sun's energy). Their alter egos also have the same last name of Danvers.
Both of them have also been a part of a variety of superhero teams, most notably the Justice League and the Avengers.
Anne VS Luz (Amphibia VS The Owl House)
"Boiling Calamity"
As we grow older and begin to accept the responsibilities of what is anticipated of us as an adult, it is always an important lesson to stay in touch with what makes us “us” and surround ourselves with the people who bring out our full potential. But in the case of these two Disney Channel protagonists, they learned these lessons by being isekai’d into entirely new lands.
Connection:
Both are animated main female protagonists from Disney Channel, who are notable for their diversity (Anne is Thai and Luz is Latina).
Both were trouble making students who would pull extravagant stuff in their school, and the day before they were transported to the unworldly realm, they were called into the principal’s office for their bad grades and overall troublemaker ability, and were given a chance to rethink themselves (Luz being sent to camp and Anne’s principal giving her an essay to right about rethinking herself).
Both on a special day, (Luz going to camp and Anne’s birthday), we’re sent to another dimension with other worldly creatures and monsters (The Demon Realm for Luz and Amphibia for Anne).
Both would be found by an extravagant person (Eda and Sprig) and would help them out (Luz helping Eda with her business and Anne saving Sprig from a giant Mantis).
Both would end up staying with them at their house that contained stuff from the past, and would have a found family, an old adult with a mysterious past (Eda and Hop Pop), an 8-10 year old kid that would form a sibling bond with despite not getting along first (King and Sprig), and an immobile “for now” loud mouth that were annoying at first but after a while people really started to like them (Hooty and Polly), that would form an unlikely friendship with a rogue person from the villain's side (Lilith and Frobo).
Most of the first season was just exploring the new world and meeting new friends, but near the end of it, they would fight a person that had betrayed someone (Lilith cursing Eda and Sasha betraying Anne) and this would happen because of an influential person (Emperor Belos and Grime), but both would realize their mistake and help them escape.
Both would try and find a way home in their second season, and would find a way to that were sacred to this realm (Titan’s Blood and the Calamity gems), and it would take a long time to find them, but would be betrayed by an at first nice fellow but would turn out to be the main big bad that ruled over the land and tricked them into helping them open a portal to the human realm, but during the finale, both of their villains would be easily defeated by an other worldly force (Anne activating her Blue powers and beating the shit out of Andrias, and The Collector being freed and no diffing Belos), but these powers were foreshadowed in the first episode (Tinella Nosa stating their is an omnipotent god that rules over them and Anne’s eyes glowing blue when she was saving Sprig).
And while both were trying to leave to the human realm, their friends were seemingly killed by the villains, (King being taken by The Collector and Marcy being stabbed by Andrias), and before they could react, they and their friends were sent to the human realm with no way back, and by then both were mentally drained and exhausted.
Both with their friends would travel to they’re parents house and emotionally reunite, and would spend the next few months going on adventures but most importantly trying to find a way back to the realms and save their friends, but would find trouble with people that traveled to the human realm to stop them (Belos and Andrias/the Frobot), and a human that would try and expose their friend’s identities (Jacob and Agent X) and would almost succeed.
Both would succeed in making it back to the realm, but would find it very different than before, and would spend time trying to find out what was happening.
Both would end up fighting some familiar villains that had teamed up to stop them, with one of them donning a giant robot suit (Boscha with Kikimora and Andrias with Darcy), but one of their friends (Amity and Sprig) reminded one of them (Boscha and Andrias) about their lost friends and would end up helping the heroes in stopping the other threat).
Both would end up realizing something about themselves in their second to last episode (Luz realizing she just wanted to be understood and Anne not loving herself before), but would overcome them and try and better themselves, but it would also help them unleash a giant power boost (Anne activating her incomplete Blue form and Luz’s palisman hatching).
Both of the main villains would be usurped by a much more powerful moon moving villain that would use their other worldly power to try and defeat the heroes (The Collector and The Core).
In their final battle against their main villain’s final gambit, and the villain had possessed a giant body so they could destroy the entire place (Belos possessing the Titan and trying to destroy the Boiling Isles from the inside and The Core taking over the moon to crash it into Amphibia) they sacrificed themselves to save their friends, and would tell their friends that they love them before they faded away into tiny particles that reflected their character into the wind.
But then both would be revived by the god of the world (The Titan and The 3 Stones Deity), and they would have a long conversation about themselves and realize all the good they had done and the deity sent them back so they could reunite with their friends.
Both would receive a substantial powerup thanks to the god of their world, and their new found powers gave them the ability to create any magic that they could think of, and they used that to reduce the main villain to dust (Luz’s Titan Form and Anne’s Full Blue Form).
Both would use another worldly source for their magic despite being powerless (Luz’s Glyphs and The Calamity Gems).
Both we’re given these powers and clues on how to control them by the god of the realm, and throughout the series it would help them in many ways through the series, and we’re given to them cause they were pure hearted unlike the others who used them for evil (The many users of the stones and Andrias and his father, and Belos using glyphs and the Titan trying to hide them , but our heroes were the most pure hearted to use them (The Titan showing Luz how to make and use the glyphs to stop Belos and the 3 stones deity giving Anne her powers to use for good).
Both would befriend (and befriend) a snobby and dickish short haired person (Amity and Sasha), and after beating them in a duel, they would grow a much closer and less toxic friendship and would become very close friends with them, and they would also befriend (and befriend) a traumatized but eccentric person (Hunter and Marcy), who loved to read books and learn about stuff but was never able to express that and became the right hand man for the evil leader of the world, and both would be possessed by the main villain but would be saved by their friends (The Core possessing Marcy and Belos possessing Hunter).
Jim Lake Vs Ladybug (Marinette) (TrollHunters VS Miraculous Ladybug)
“Hunter’s Luck”
Connections/Thematics:
When I first started pushing this matchup, I had trouble finding pre-made connections for it. Thus, I tried starting them on my own. They were small connections at first, nothing much to look at, but as I kept pushing the matchup, I found myself revising the connections often. They evolved, until what was once a few insignificant looking sentences became 694 words worth of connections, and that's excluding the Core Theme I eventually wrote and the contrasts. Within those hundreds of words, I have done my best to fit as much meaningful content as I could without fluffy nonsense. These are my results:
Core Themes:
Average high schoolers who were chosen to be the latest in a long line to wield magical artifacts (The Amulet of Daylight and The Ladybug Miraculous) that would allow them to transform into powerful heroes. They notably struggle with balancing their two lives along with their own insecurities and they happen to have notable selflessness.
Extended Connections:
They are average high schoolers who were chosen to be the latest in a long line to wield magical artifacts (The Amulet of Daylight and The Ladybug Miraculous) that would allow them to transform, summoning a suit and weapons.
Both would initially try to refuse the call out of the belief that they weren't good enough before they embraced their roles. However, they would still continue to face and overcome insecurities and lack of self confidence.
They are both inherently selfless, not only caring for others but doing their best not to burden others and instead take their burdens upon them. This can sometimes go so far as to be a fault.
A significant struggle for each is that they must balance being their hero lives and their normal lives, keeping their roles as heroes a secret.
In their normal lives, both aren't very popular, being somewhat socially awkward, clumsy, and generally unassuming, and are consistently accompanied by only a single best friend (Tobias Domzalski and Alya Cesaire) who tends to be more outgoing and energetic. These friends would each be the first person to know their secrets.
They would also have a significant crush on a more popular student (Claire Nunez and Adrien Agreste) with highly protective and important parents (Claire's mother being a councilwoman and Adrien's father being an influential fashion designer). Both of their crushes fight alongside them, wielding staffs and darkness related powers (Shadow Magic and Cataclysm/destruction).
The difference here is that Jim and Claire end up together in the first season while Marinette and Adrien have yet to do so.
Both would be forced to deal with a somewhat obsessive and self-absorbed blonde bully (Steve Palchuk and Chloe Bourgeois) who also doubled as unsuccessful love rivals. However, both bullies would at some point reform and become valuable allies, but the following character development for them would be handled poorly (Steve was flanderized while Chloe's arc was undone).
Both would face villains who wanted to steal and use their artifacts for their own purposes and were hidden behind well respected public guises whom even they personally respected (Strickler and Hawk Moth/Gabriel Agreste). The difference here is that Strickler redeemed himself while Hawk Moth is still the big bad.
At some point, their main romances would be somewhat complicated by blue-haired musicians (Douxie, who initially seemed to be gaining Claire's affection, and Luka, who would actually date Marinette) but this would end up being resolved and things would pretty much go back to normal (nothing even happened in Jim's case aside from Jim being a little bit jealous at times).
Their artifacts each have a similar function in that they can unlock new functions through outside sources (The Amulet can have properly cut gemstones inserted while feeding Magicaroons to the Kwami of the Miraculous is similar).
Both heroes generally defend a single area (Arcadia/Trollmarket and Paris) against a specific threat (Trolls/other magic creatures and Akumatized villains/Sentimonsters) which their weapons are specially designed to combat (Jim's sword is made of daylight, the weakness of trolls and the Ladybug Miraculous can purify Akumas and Amoks).
At the end of the day, they are the only ones who are equipped to properly defeat their series' big bads (Eclipse is the only weapon that can kill Gunmar and it can only be unlocked through the Amulet of Daylight which can only be wielded by the Trollhunter and the Ladybug Miraculous is the only thing that can purify Akumas and Amoks).
Each has an artistic talent that notably helps them operate better (Jim's cooking gave him a good foundation for bladework and Marinette's interests in fashion and design help her use Lucky Charm).
Both characters are the protagonists of the 3D animated series that started in the mid 2010's (2016 for Trollhunters and 2015 for Miraculous).
Both have had their goodness and heroism recognized by legends of European folklore (Jim was chosen by Merlin and worthy to wield Excalibur and Marinette has been complimented by Santa Claus).
Both are notably very creative and agile fighters (Jim has implemented many unique strategies with his armor while Lucky Charm actively encourages Ladybug's creativity).
Contrasts:
Jim is very often willing to kill his enemies (Rule 2 of being a Trollhunter encourages it) while Ladybug typically just disarms her foes (though this is usually enough to defeat them).
Ladybug is a well known superhero internationally since her exploits are so high profile while Jim's work is intentionally done in secret, meaning he's only really known in Trollmarket (and later Arcadia Oaks).
Albert Wesker Vs King Bradley (Fullmetal Alchemist VS Resident Evil)
"Wrathful Saturation"
The connections between Albert Wesker and King Bradley is that they're both evil, human hating villains who cover their eyes. They are both incredibly fast warriors who were trained by a secret organization since childhood and where given an element that gave them inhuman powers. They also both worked with the protagonists of their series before revealing their true nature and becoming a main villain. They both have also worked with things with similar names. (Wesker's Uroboros virus and Bradley working with the Ouroboros group).
Star-Lord vs Cayde-6 (Marvel vs Destiny)
Connections:
Gunslinging space guardian leaders of their respective sci-fi verses.
Both hail from Earth and are part human, part something else in some way (Star-Lord is a half-human, half-alien hybrid while Cayde-6 is an Exo, former humans turned into robots while still acting mostly human).
Skilled with their shots as they primarily wield an exotic firearms as their main weapons of choice (Element Guns and Ace of Spades).
Can manipulate a solar cosmic energy that they received from extraterrestrial beings (Star-Lord's Master of the Sun powers being unlocked by Ragnar and Cayde-6's Solar Light being granted to him by the Traveller).
They can use this solar cosmic energy and channel it through their guns for powerful and devastating blasts (Star-Lord utilizing his Master of the Sun powers through his Element Guns and Cayde-6 using his Light to enhance his Ace of Spades revolver by creating the Golden Gun).
Both are members of a heroic space-fairing team dedicated into fighting off cosmic threats and protecting lives (the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Guardians).
They also serving as leading figures of their respective guardian teams (Star-Lord being the group's leader and Cayde-6 serving as the Hunter Vanguard).
Both fought many challenging battles facing off dangerous cosmic threats and as they experienced many hardships and horrors, it has taken on a toll on their psyches and weighed them down.
Snarky, gruff, roughish, and charming heroes with a humorous edge to their tongues but when the situation calls for it, both can get rather serious and determined, willing to lay down their lives necessary at a moment's notice and fight great evils beyond the stars to the best of their abilities for the sake of keeping their cosmic neighborhoods safe.
Squall Leonhart VS Tatsuya Suou (Final Fantasy VIII VS Persona 2)
Connections:
Moody, standoffish, and antisocial JRPG teenage protagonists of the PS1 era.
Share an association with a lion motif.
Have a preference for swords in battle.
Possess a myriad of power that possess its unique set of abilities (Magic/Summons and Personas).
Both have a reputation as the residential "bad boys" of their schools, which earns them a lot of unwanted popularity from their peers.
Their strong values in rebellion and independence stem from their own hardships that they had endured from their complicated pasts (Squall believes he can't rely on people so as to not feel sadness when he inevitably loses them and Tatsuya wants to be financially independent so that he won't rely on the family he has a strained relationship with).
Beneath their harsh exteriors, they have a heart of gold and are genuinely noble individuals who eventually came to cherish the bonds they have with their friends on their supernatural journeys across space and time.
Both fall in love with a cheerful and optimistic black haired girls who helped them open up to others and become a better person (Rinoa Heartilly and Maya Amano).
Because of their traumatic experiences that totally disconnected them from their pasts it ultimately led them to develop their seemingly cold-hearted personalities to mask their emotional vulnerability in fear of losing friends and becoming isolated, but over time would come to terms with their insecurities and cherish the friendships they formed along the way to the point where they were willing to give their life for their friends and protect the universe that is at stake.
Azrael VS Scarlet Spider (Kaine) (DC VS Marvel)
"Seeing Red"
The connections between Azrael and Kaine are that they are both antiheroic counterparts to famous comic book superheroes and vigilantes (Batman and Spider-Man, respectively) where they made their debuts in the 1990s.
Both were originally antagonistic towards their heroic counterparts in their initial storylines before developing a more "friendlier" relationship with them and going independent.
Both are violent, dangerous, edgy, and mentally troubled characters who had suffered from physical degeneration before and are named after Biblical figures where they are unabashed to using lethal force against their foes unlike their heroic counterparts and serve as a dark reflection as them.
Both are the secretive engineered products of supervillains (Azrael is an artificially enhanced and brainwashed assassin raised by the Order of St. Dumas while Kaine is a Spider-Man clone created by the Jackal).
Both belong to a notable superhero family and at some points in their histories, they adopted the mantles of superheroes who were put out of commission (Batman and Ben Reilly, respectively).
Both have the ability to inflict harm against their victims through just their touch (Wrath of God and Mark of Kaine, respectively).
Both have donned various costumes and suits throughout their histories but have ultimately settled on wearing a black-and-red suit with sophisticated technologies integrated into its design (Suit of Sorrows and Stealth Suit, respectively).
Kizuna Red VS Red Keeper (Isekai Red VS Ranger Reject)
"Red Freedom"
Two red leaders with their teams managed to defeat an evil invasion and save their world. However the legendary red warrior lost his life to save his friends and the other rejected neo-ranger became obsessed with the popularity he received during the battles.
The connections between these two are both inspired by Super Sentai.
Both have a team of five with each team having the same coloured suits.
Both have a twist on the regular Sentai genre Kizuna Red being an Isekai and Red Keeper being in a The Boys type world.
Fantastic Four Battle Royale!
The Fantastic Four is a great superhero team, one of the very best in my opinion. But what would happen if the team members ever split up? What would happen if they all had a constant feud that seemingly could not be resolved? What would happen if the members of Marvel's first family fought each other in a four way battle to the death (Mr. Fantastic vs Invisible Woman vs Human Torch vs The Thing)? Who is the strongest Fantastic Four member and who would win among the rest?
The Hunter vs The Arisen (Monster Hunter vs Dragon's Dogma)
Heroic medieval protagonists of beloved high fantasy JRPG series created by Capcom, representing the sum of multiple warriors that have fought across countless generations and being specialized in doing battle with and bringing down colossal beasts. Starting out as mere town folk and nobodies, they would take up arms once opportunity had revealed itself in order to defend humanity from monsters, assisted in battle by loyal companions, crafting their massive arsenals from their fallen foes and relying on both sheer might and cunning strategy to win the day.
Their legends would culminate in decisive battles against larger than life, fire breathing dragons, as well as a white clad, godly foe with ethereal powers. (More digestible versions of the full connections, there are still more).
