Everyone is messy and complicated and ends up hurting each other. Ilya's niece feels like a real teenager. And of course getting saddled with a teenager completely derails Shane and Ilya's Ottawa plan. Realistic consequences make for great conflict and storytelling. Lovely structure (non-linear narration with different intertwined storylines).

Also does a good job of showing the less nice side of Yuna Hollander, momager. This author has a superb handle on Shane's characterisation, imo.

And nobody knows if Shane Hollander is going to survive another mediocre season with the Boston Raiders. Isn’t it funny how a single nick in the ice can change the entire game?| My note for this fic simply says "mental health AU" which probably is very indicative of the gibbering mess I was when I was done reading. Take this as a warning, ok? In this AU both Ilya and Shane have mental health issues, everything is handled very well, as far as I can tell, but I also must say this story hit too close to home for me, so I can't be very objective about it. I also gathered this is inspired by a book, but I've never read it and was able to enjoy this without any prior knowledge, FYI.

Fantastic Hayden and Jackie as supportive friends. Love the story structure too and the way therapy is portrayed here. I really hope the author will write more because there's a few threads that could be explored more.

So much fun and perfectly in character for that time in the situationship and the internet era, so to speak. The author had such a stroke of genius.
Unnecessary Roughness | 16K | The problem with Happily Ever After is, well, the After.| Future fic. Ilya and Shane are retired, they have a three-year-old and work full-time on the Irina Foundation (which they have expanded). If I had to sun up the plot, it would be '"Shane has a very bad day". What this fic accomplishes in only 16K is amazing. This has immediately shot up to the top of the best post-retirement focus out there! This is so nuanced and full of details, the characterisation is obviously fantastic, but I just can't get over how much research and world-building had to go into this (world-building is probably the wrong word here but hopefully you can still understand what I mean). And it also tackled hockey culture and hazing so organically in the story.

everybody leaving tags on my letterboxd roundup like "they didn't do the nobody scene??" we're so fucking past that i need you to catch up. i went into the movie knowing they wouldn't do the nobody scene and frankly i had made peace with it like okay if you don't want odysseus calling himself outis because you don't feel like the joke translates well enough WHATEVER you dont need to film every line of the poem. what i was NOT prepared for is that THEY DON'T SPEAK TO POLYPHEMUS AT ALL. they don't steal a giant wheel of cheese, they don't get him drunk, odysseus doesn't taunt him after their escape, AND he doesn't cry out to poseidon or the other cyclopes on the shore. it's "revealed" that he can speak in the cave before their escape as he prays to poseidon. someone asks odysseus "should we try to reason with him?" and ODYSSEUS says "we're past that." resulting in an adaptation where odysseus does not use wit or trickery to escape polyphemus at all-- which is the case with every single obstacle he meets. this guy does not lie and he does not play tricks. his intelligence is restricted to battlefield tactics, the administration and direction of his men as units. You have to poke polyphemus so he opens his eye before you can stab it! I am very smart. the only point at which he could be described as "tricking" polyphemus is when-- because the movie is allergic to making odysseus look stupid or silly in any way-- they tie straw to their backs to be mistaken for sheep instead of riding the undersides of the sheep, and we are presented with an action sequence of trousered and armored soldiers somersaulting and army crawling under polyphemus' gently dangling hand. which i hate because it is a less clever solution that only works if polyphemus is extremely stupid (shepherd who doesn't know how many sheep he has) -- and more importantly because it removes IMO the most emotionally efficient moment in the odyssey, which is polyphemus talking to the one sheep that's walking slow because it has odysseus on its belly like "oh no are you feeling okay today? you're moving so slow, maybe you're upset because i'm in pain? you're the best sheep in the world and i love all of you my sheeps" like that scene is supposed to instantly retroactively humanize polyphemus and make you realize odysseus has been torturing a person with feelings who basically just wants to be left alone with his pet sheep and it's extremely good at that in every translation i've ever read. but not one of odysseus' enemies are allowed an inch of humanity in this entire adaptation which seems to be a veiled metaphor for the vietnam war so what can you expect. and yes because odysseus never does anything wrong or stupid or silly, OF COURSE he would never reveal his name and allow polyphemus to curse him, and his crew only "believes" that he's been cursed by poseidon thereafter, which removes the ENTIRE MAIN ANTAGONIST of the story and changes the central conflict from man vs. god to man vs. ????
rewatching ep 2 and i truly do not know how anyone genuinely thinks shane was a bad or not well-liked captain. jackie says "cap's here!" and they all start chanting "cap". they're immediately asking him for the final say on whether that one guy's playoff beard stays or goes. when shane says ilya's the best, they immediately rush to correct him and assure him he's the best. they love him. they respect him. he's clearly good at what he does to command that kind of respect.

spun out so far explicit, 78k, ongoing. shane breaks down in his first year as a centaur, gets an autism assessment, and then has to keep on going. i really love the dynamic between him and ilya in this fic; there's a genuinely fantastic development of how they communicate and how good they are about supporting each other emotionally through things.
the end of all roads teen, 55k, ongoing. shane hollander has a heart attack and retires from hockey before he ever plays his first game. no-hockey aus are So heart-wrenching (LITERALLY) and this one is absolutely incredible, especially in terms of how this changes his relationship with ilya, who gets to stay on the ice.
shipping up in boston mature, 33k, oneshot. shane hollander comes out and is sent up to boston, where he is So Very Normal about ilya rozanov in public. so normal, in fact, that the fans start shipping him- and cliff marleau. loud wheezing. yeah. so fun.

people have so little imagination in this fandom when it comes to shane beyond sex (and inventing ways for him to be a gay republican lmfao). he can't be into movies. he's only allowed to read hockey books. he has no other hobbies. he plays hockey and he and ilya fuck and that's it. he doesn't do social media. he runs, maybe, but it's only conditioning for hockey, nothing more. he was a bad student and hated school, all he wanted do was play hockey. nothing about a favorite subject or topic he loved learning about. it's so..... why can't he be a film buff? why can't he be really into indie films and film festivals? he likes to read canonically, why can't we expand his taste beyond books about hockey? where's the imagination? why aren't people inventing new hobbies for him? ilya calling him boring means something totally different than him..... having nothing to him except liking hockey and sex.

Suicide attempt hc discussion but Sat here staring at the wall for a full hour doing nothing but thinking about Shane finding ilya after a suicide attempt and having to try to help and calling 911 just living such a bad nightmare he didn’t even realize he should be scared for it. Thinking the whole time if Ilya dies he’s next. He’s next. Ilya dying in his arms Shane covered in his blood as he tries to stop the flow as they wait for an ambulance to arrive (Ilya did not have it in him to go the same as his mama) and he’s just screaming and crying that he lost his baby :( most crucial to this is that Shane then lies to ilya and says the dog walker found him and called 911 then Shane. Shane didn’t see a thing. Don’t worry about Shane this is not a Shane moment Ilya there’s no reason to feel guilty trust me I love you . You are everything to me I just want you to feel better. I love you. You left me. But that’s okay! I’m okay! Let’s go for a walk. You were going to leave me forever. What do you want for breakfast? I love you! I saw you dying. You are the only thing that matters to me. There was so much blood. I saw you dying.
