The author must have been eating woodland salad, candied acorns, turnip pie, plum-cakes, bilberry tarts, arrowroot shortbread, and glazed maple shoots, and drinking flagons of October ale and raspberry cordial when they wrote this
fool for love switchblade
In honor of the hundredth anniversary of The Blue Castle, @dustpileofherown sent out a call for a hundred new TBC fan works. So here's Valancy and her beloved cat Good Luck.
And sometimes he and Roaring Abel smoked fiercely the whole evening and never said a word, while Cissy lay in the hammock swung between the verandah posts and Valancy sat idly on the steps, her hands clasped over her knees, and wondered dreamily if she were really Valancy Stirling and if it were only three weeks since she had left the ugly old house on Elm Street.
🏰HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY TO THE BLUE CASTLE!
For the 100th birthday of one of my favorite books, I commissioned @sparemoon to do an art piece of Valancy, Barney, Cissy, and Roaring Abel. There were certain elements from the book that I wanted in the piece, and @sparemoon combined them all so skillfully and with the beauty and wonder that the book evokes, I could cry looking at this. I'm particularly thrilled that we now have art with Cissy and Roaring Abel, and more of Valancy and Barney.
The Blue Castle may sometimes be an overlooked little book, but it certainly now has a @dustpileofherown thanks to the fandom we've found here. 🩵

I haven’t said anything interesting in a long while. this will continue
was inspired by @mercheriie to share some playlists i made while HEAVILY brainrotting tcomc this summer + some of my many many thoughts
"red damask, seawater, opium"
made with the grotto on monte cristo in mind while sweating through may and june and going out dancing more nights than not. i was looking for songs that feel as overwhelmingly lush and opulent as the cave, heady and hungry with an edge of menace hinting that all is not as it seems. this playlist is the nonchalance and hedonism that monte cristo wraps around himself as mise-en-scène for destruction, and as a barrier between him and the shame of his past, too fantastical to be real because it isn’t. it is also the attachments carried from that past and echoed in the new generation, which become an undercurrent of wanting through the story and persist after destruction is achieved.
“courage boarding the ship”
this was made from albert’s decision to leave paris and earn a name under his own terms. an arrogant, pampered boy about to become a soldier, spoiled and soft but just a boy nonetheless, who has only recently learned to set his pride aside for the sake of those he loves. at the same time, it is edmond watching the catalans pass on his way to the chateau d’if, furious and terrified but above all resolved to see mercedes again. it is the feeling of being thrust into the unknown, by the force of circumstance or the force of your own mind, and knowing nothing except that you will make it out, and make it out better.
“at the end of the odyssey we mourn what once was”
the ending of tcomc is the conclusion of one hero’s journey – edmond’s – and the beginning of a new one – albert’s. neither of them had any choice in the matter of leaving; one way or another, circumstances and people forced them out of the comfortable present and into the fog of uncertain future. this playlist is about coming to after a violent loss of innocence, edmond on the tail end of a lifetime spent avenging it, albert just setting out to get it back. it’s an answer to “courage” from the perspective of those left behind when the hero’s journey begins.

im a simple man i like when things are shaped like other things. stool shaped like a mushroom. pillows shaped like fruit. salt and pepper shaker shaped like two friends hugging. in my ideal world i will have a house stocked entirely with novelty objects shaped like other objects and it will be beautiful.
Everything is friend shaped
Well, you can't never let anything happen to him. Then nothing would ever happen to him. Not much fun for little Harpo.
FINDING NEMO (2003) dir. Andrew Stanton
I think the purest form of love is just wanting someone to notice life with you. "taste this. look at that. hear this song." again and again. until you can't imagine noticing life without them.
