Noldor Hair Headcanons (4/4)
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | On AO3
There isnโt anyone left who knows how to do Maglorโs Mourning Braids, but they are described in a lament for Fingon thatโs still doing the rounds, so Elrond and Elros make their best try. That style is henceforth known as Elrondโs Mourning Braids (because Elros gets forgotten by the elves a lot after he dies, letโs not lie to ourselves).
A decade of nothing but Mourning Braids really hammers in that Elrond and Elros werenโt just hostages.
It doesnโt do a lot for their reputation, but they donโt particularly care.
Bit by bit, Elros adopts mannish customs after making his Choice, and even goes so far as to cut his hair above the shoulder. Elrond is pre-grieving his brother too much to be properly shocked about this.
(Itโs still long enough to braid. Itโs fine. Itโs not like his brother is leaving him on purpose. Or rejecting him. Elrond knows that.)
Everyone thinks Elrond should wear his hair in the Sindarin custom but he refuses to give up his Noldor braids. Elros braids his brotherโs hair until he leaves for Nรบmenor.
Elrond and Gil-galad do each otherโs hair through the Second Age. Because theyโre the last of their family and the only ones to keep to the old traditions. Not at all because theyโre close. Of course not. Wouldnโt be proper. (They spend two hours at it every morning alone in Gil-galadโs chambers.)
Elrond revives his Mourning Braids on his 500th birthday.
Celebrimbor learns about dwarven hair culture. Itโs Very Different but kind of similar, in that fancy hairstyles are a status thing. (Or really, long hair/beard is a status thing and then you have to do something with it because otherwise it catches everywhere.)
Narvi isnโt in fact the first dwarf to touch elven hair, but thatโs only because Finrod had a very extended concept of family.
Annatar magically braids his own hair, when he even bothers (his hair doesnโt even singe in the forge if it falls into the fire). This hurts Celebrimborโs sensitivities, but he adapts to Annatarโs ways, and adapts again, and adapts, until he really canโt.
Sauron cuts off Celebrimborโs beautiful dark braids full of dwarven beads and ties them to the spears of his personal guard. Elrond never quite manages to get that image out of his head.
At war again, Gil-Galad invents locs. Well, re-invents them really, because Silvan elves have worn them forever, but heโs the first Noldor to do it. (He has Fingonโs hair texture. Does that mean heโs Fingonโs son? Who knows. Heโs not telling.)
Itโs only after Gil-galadโs death that Elrond teaches himself how to braid his own hair.
He hates it.
But he wonโt wear his hair loose.
(The first style he masters is Maglorโs Mourning Braids.) (It really shouldnโt be because itโs Intricate but Elrond is nothing if not stubborn.)
Imladris has a full salon, like the Noldor palaces of old.
It doesnโt get that much use, to be honest.
Erestor learns to braid really tiny braids into Glorfindelโs hair, so that he never wears his hair fully loose but it still looks like itโs loose. Everyone else thinks itโs ridiculous. Glorfindel thinks itโs the best thing. Elrond watches them with a knowing smile.
Celebrรญan wears her hair half-loose in the Sindar style until she marries Elrond. It takes him several years to find the strength to ask her to do his hair, but she lets him do hers and he sneaks in more and more braids until they settle on a mixed-style. When he finally allows her to do his hair, Celebrรญan makes her mother grumpily teach her proper Noldor braids.
Elladan and Elrohir only wear practical Sindarin braids for the day to day, but they delight in doing each otherโs hair in complicated styles for feasts and ceremonies. Elrond cries the first time they accidentally replicate Maglorโs favourite hairstyle.
Arwen is a little gremlin who squirms out of her parentsโ lap when they try to braid her hair. Sheโs also inherited even more of Melianโs hair than Elrond, so even when they manage to do a braid, itโs gone in a few hours.
It takes years after Celebrรญan sails, because theyโre all grieving, but eventually Elrohir offers to do his fatherโs hair, and Elrond lets him. They donโt do it every day, but itโs a large step in their recovery process.
By the way, Thranduilโs thing for flower/leaf crowns isnโt a Sindar or Silvan practice, itโs just that he wanted to be Fancy but Not In a Noldor Way, thank you very much. Heโs also very vain. His servants do his hair.
Little Estel is very cute, has very silky hair for a man, even of his line, and makes a great doll for the twins to play with. He likes his hair touched A Lot.
Arwen learns about that early on. Sheโs a very good silver smith. Aragorn now owns a lot of hair jewellery. He canโt make a braid to save his life, but thatโs fine, because Arwen canโt wear them anyway.
In the North, he wears his hair like Elros, cut above his shoulders. Once he becomes King, he lets it grow to his waist. Heโs the first Man since Tuor to casually wear his hair in elaborate Noldor braids. He accidentally sets a fashion.
Arwen also does รowynโs and Faramirโs hair regularly. The first time is for their wedding. รowyn isnโt a fan of the unpractical Fรซanorian styles, but the Nolofinwรซan battle braids look incredibly good on her.
Wandering on the coast for two ages, Maglor no longer does anything with his hair. It doesnโt enjoy the salt at all.
When Elrond finally finds him, he almost has to cut it all off. Instead, he spends weeks carefully untangling and moisturising Maglorโs hair until he can finally braid it in the old style for him. Maglor cries.
Elrond cries too. He cries even more when Maglor sits them down on the floor and braids his hair like he used to.
They sail together with the other Ring bearers, and thereโs a lot more crying when they find Celebrรญan, Gil-galad and Maedhros waiting for them together.
Celebrรญan is wearing her hair in one of the Fรซanorian styles that can be done one-handed.
Galadriel isnโt entirely happy about that, but she sees Finrod and forgets about it.
Thereโs some more crying.
Fingon is also there (the amount of gold in his hair is a bit blinding, not that Elrond will ever tell him) and also wearing a one-handed braided style.
There are some fights over who gets to do Elrondโs hair in the next few weeks.
Celebrรญan wins most of them, because sheโs inherited Galadrielโs viciousness, but she lets everyone have a turn.
Elrond would like to know why he doesnโt have a say in it.
(He does. They would never touch him if he didnโt want to. Theyโre just very happy to see him.)
He does go to visit Elwing and Eรคrendil in their tower, and he goes with his hair down, because heโs a peace-maker at heart.
But in Tirion, he always sports the most complex hairstyles, just barely coming short of overshadowing the High Kingโs (mostly because his hair is still too silky for it to hold well), because his family all want to outdo each other.
He earns the reputation of being the most beloved of all the Noldor.
Itโs not wrong.
Some visuals & more in my art tag
having some Thoughts N Feelings abt elrond & elros + the historical practice of rulers taking children from the families of their tributaries or even their (nominal) allies as hostages
primarily that (1) the Politics of the Fรซanorions having the heirs of Fingolfin AND Thingol AND All Three of the Three Houses as their hostages is likeโฆ soooo overlooked and underutilized in the fanworks Iโve seen
and (2) i think it would be rlly funny and also fucked-up if most elves are Totally Scandalized And Horrified by this Weird Human Behavior of โhostage-takingโ if/when they see it happening in the second & third ages as human settlements & societies in M-E grow & develop, while Elrond is just like, โthis is Normal, what are you Talking aboutโ
Headcanon that while unequivocally a wise, kind, and forgiving person full of love, hope, and mercy, at some point in post-Fourth Age Aman, Elrond is invited to some event or gathering where the Valar are also going to be present and he just shows up in full Nรบmenorean garb.ย He is perfectly polite, doesnโt bring up Nรบmenor in conversation at all, is every bit as full of grace and generosity as he always is, but he is also very much standing there wearing an original Nรบmenorean collar depicting the Eagles circling over Meneltarma, and the layers of his tunic and mantle resemble great waves overlapping atop each other.
Quick design for Plague Doctor Elrond
inspired by this post by @thesummerestsolstice
Whenever Numenor experienced a plague or outbreak, Elrond came, without fail, to treat the sick and offer the people of the island comfort. He did it for many reasonsโย to honor the legacy of Elros and his descendants, because he sometimes considered the Numenorians more his people than either elves or men, because he was a healer who believed deeply that all life had value.
Of course, treating mortal plagues is a hazardous businessโย especially for a part-human medic who is just as susceptible to the disease as his patients.
Elrond, never one to be dissuaded from trying to save lives, tries to find a way to protect himself from the infection while being able to treat his patients. No one in Middle-Earth knows exactly how mortal diseases spread, but it's clear that it spreads from the healthy to the illโย through bad air, coughing, infected blood, or some other means. So, Elrond has to find a way to not make contact with or breathe the same air as his patients. While treating them.
Eventually, he settles on a set of robes that leaves no inch of his skin uncovered, along with heavy, opaque veils and a mask of his own design for his face. The maskโย full of athelas flowers to purify the airโย is fashioned in the shape of a bird as an homage to Melian, who was said to have healing powers. He made the main piece mask with his own hands, carved it from dragon boneโย sturdy, and thought to have protective powers against against diseases and curses. The eyes are made of dark tinted glass that glows faintlyโย a gift from Celebrimbor.
In all fairness, Elrond did not realize how creepy the bone white mask and fully-black outfit was, especially given his general aura of strangeness ad birdlike mannerisms. He had bigger concerns at the time. That said, his outfit, which kept him from getting sick even during the worst of the outbreak, was soon adopted by many of the Numenorian healers. Over time, the story of the plague doctor shifted became part of Numenor's legendโย that healers dressed in such strange outfits to frighten disease away. In that way, the odd, birdlike appearance of the plague doctors soon became a comfort to the Numenorians, rather than a fright.
As gifts for helping with various outbreaks over the years, Elrond also got several plague doctor masks that were decorated, more for style than for purpose. He wears them at fancy elvish events sometimes, just to mess with everyone. And whenever he heads off to Numenor, he always makes sure to bring his full plague-doctor regalia, just so the people there will know he's always there to protect them from any lurking plagues.
@lotr20ย |ย Day 6 โณ Healing: Aragorn in the Houses of Healing
Aragorn went first to Faramir, and then to the Lady รowyn, and last to Merry. When he had looked on the faces of the sick and seen their hurts he sighed. 'Here I must put forth all such power and skill as is given to me,' he said. 'Would that Elrond were here, for he is the eldest of all our race, and has the greater power.'
you all get it
I cannot believe there's absolutely no way to watch free shows and movies anymore, there are too many paid streaming platforms and pirating websites have viruses and ads preventing you from watching it uninterrupted((.)) id rather follow the rules and purchase media moving forward because it is too inconvenient. Seriously, free and no ads or viruses with 1080p streaming is DEAD.
Exactly! It's freaking annoying when I want to watch movies but I would have to subscribe to like 24 different services . Just to watch the shows that I like.

Silm Headcanon:
Battle braids were common amongst the Noldor when they first arrived in Beleriand. The tradition of braids had transitioned from Valinorian family, friendship or marriage braids into ones for battle. New styles were invented and quickly spread across the Noldorian community.
The length, placement, thickness and beads that were added or not added told stories of survival and hardship throughout time.
The most common ones were the following:
First battle braids, a simple three strand braid with a black bead marking that an elf had spilled their first black blood.
Partaker braids, for different big battles that simply marked a soldier as having been apart of said fight.
Fealty braids, openly showing who oneโs loyalty lies with.
And at last survivors braids, these were worn by those who survived any type of imprisonment by dark creatures, there was also a more complicated version of this braid for former thralls of Angband.
There were also very rare braids which brought the wearer great respect and honor if an elven warrior wore said braid in their hair.
One of the rarest and most admired was the braid marking the survival of an encounter with Sauron, which on its own was feat enough.
It was a complicated four too five thread braid with multiple smaller or larger beads depending on the length or severity of the meeting.
Another was the one worn by Balrog slayers. This braid however only really surfaced after the first age when Glorfindel returned from Valinor since there were no surviving Balrog slayers to wear it.
One of the few braids that stayed the same from Valinor to Beleriand was the braid of the High King. Having only ever been worn by Finwรซ, Fรซanor, Maedhros, Fingolfin, Fingon and Turgon.
Gil-Galad did not continue this tradition due to his decent from the house of Finarfin whoโs braiding traditions, just as many other elven houses, had faded over the years.
But since braids were mainly worn by the first to arrive in Beleriand after the flight of the Noldor, therefore fรซanorians and their loyalists over time battle braids became a symbol of their house which quickly resulted and a fast decline of elven battle braids being seen on daily basis.
After the second and third kinslaying they had nearly completely disappeared in all but those still loyal to the remaining two sonโs of Fรซanor and the sonโs themselves.
There were also unique braid, only ever worn by one person.
One of those was Maedhrosโ side braid.
A simple but elegant side braid on his left with no beads or pearls or any decorations whatsoever.
He wore it always after his rescue from the cliffs of Thangorodrim.
This braid was neatly kept, closly against his skull and tightly braided.
The braid of Maedhros became a symbol for the Lord of Himring and only ever associated with him and his qualities.
His formidable talent as a warlord, his unchallenged title as the greatest and fiercest swordsman of Beleriand, his fรซanorian heritage and his standing as leader of the followers of house Fรซanor.
The orcs, goblins, werewolves and evil men began to fear the braid of the red haired elf and his name became even more devastating to them than it already was.
After Maedhros died none dared ever wear his braid, for it stood for a fury no one dared claim as their own.
The centuries went by and braids got fewer and fewer. The second age was nearly at its end and the war against Sauron in full go.
But then came the day on which Sauronโs forces marched with Celebrimborโs dead body used as a flag.
And the infamous fury of the Lord of Himring was set ablaze in another, one who deemed himself close to the deceased elf to this day.
Elrond.
When he saw his beloved cousinโs body, defaced and dishonored that fire his foster father had carried was lit within him, and something snapped.
The next day the entire army was in shock and disbelief as their Kingโs herald walked onto the battlefield wearing said infamous side braid, paired with a set of armor made by Celebrimbor, and an ear cuff also known for having once belonged to Maedhros.
That day the orcs of Sauron learned to fear the fury of the half elf, for they had already forgotten what true Noldorian spirit was. Elrond cut them down one by one, killing hundreds of orcs by himself and struck terror into the hearts of his enemies as they watched their companions fall to his blade.
Elrond didnโt stop until nearly all orcs were either dead or had fled from his wrath.
Then he went to find his cousins body. He freed him from the wooden pole he had beed bound to and carried him away. Far off into nature, away from Lindon and Eregion, far away from all they once knew and laid him to rest in a peaceful spot where many flowers grew and old trees surrounded them.
To this day Lord Elrond visits his cousin often, for his final resting place is no far from Imladris, and to this day he wears the braid once associated with Maedhros, and he would do so until his arrival in Valinor.
Some random elf (and Aragorn) headcanons:
-Legolas has blue/brown heterochromia
-Elrohir prefers to dress in blue and Elladan in white
-Legolas is shorter than Aragorn, Aragorn doesnโt let him forget it
-Legolas starts fights for fun
-Arwen is taller than both of the twins
More on the idea that Elrond gets more eldritch as time goes on:
See the thing about Elrond is that the human parts of him are just, fundamentally, not designed to live forever. Some may be injured beyond repair, others will succumb to illness, others to age. That's hardly unique, it's a reality all half-elves have to face. The elvish parts of a mortal half-elf will keep them looking young, even when they're close to death, but the human parts of an immortal half-elf can pose far more problems. After all, choosing to be immortal can only do so much to alter a half-elf's biology.
But life is adaptable, and often far sturdier than it seems. The human parts of an immortal half-elf are destined to die, but they do not do so all at once. And because of that, the elvish half is able to slowly replace the failing parts, allowing half-elves to attain immortality at the price of slowly stripping away their humanity. It's long been noted that half-elves often start to show more elvish features as they age, often significantly changing how they look. Erestor Caranthirion starts with his mother Haleth's dark brown hair, but as he ages, it slowly bleaches to Miriel's silver.
See, the thing is, elves aren't immortal in the truest sense either. Under stress, elves will fade, and even without it, they'll eventually succumb to sea-longing. Normally, all this means is that half-elves will have a truly elvish fate.
It's different for Elrond.
Just as elvish blood resists the aging and injuries of humans, Maiarin blood is able to overcome the fading of elves. And just as Elrond's elvish blood begins to strip away his mortal blood as he ages, so to does his ainuric blood begin to shine through more and more, as stress and time wear away the elvish parts of him.
He ends up looking so much like Luthien and Melian because those are the parts of him that are best suited to survive Middle-Earthโย the only parts of him that could allow him to live through everything that happened to him.
