The way most autism literature describes "literal interpretation" is often not at all similar to how I experience it. Teenage me even thought I couldn't be autistic because I've always been able to learn metaphors easily.

In fact, I love wordplay of all kinds. Teenage me was fascinated to learn all the types of figurative language there are in poetry and literature.

But paperwork and questionnaires are hard, because there's so much they don't state clearly. Or they don't leave room for enough nuance.

"List all the jobs you've had, with start and end dates." What if I don't remember the exact day or month? Is the year enough?

"Have you been suffering from blurred vision?" Well, if I take off my glasses the whole world is blurred, but I'm fairly sure that's not what the intake form at the optometrist is asking.

Or the infamous (and infuriatingly stereotypical) "Would you rather go to a library or a party?" What sort of party? Where? Who's there? I work at a library. Am I currently at the library for work or pleasure? Does it have a good collection?

It's not common figures of speech that confound me. It's ambiguity, in situations that aren't supposed to be ambiguous.

So, without telling us, Microsoft has removed WordPad from our computers. Anything you used to use WordPad for will now open in Microsoft Word.

At the same time, Microsoft have inserted an AI feature called "Copilot" in Microsoft Word which runs automatically unless you turn it off.

I've been using WordPad rather than Word for twenty years because every time they make Word fast enough to be convenient, they stuff it with "features" and slow it down again. I don't need a grammar checker and I can spellcheck well enough without a red wiggly line and I don't want to have to manually turn off the less-than-helpful auto-replacements for when I'm writing a fictional name that happens to have a common misspelling in it. The only thing I ever needed to open anything in Word for was to check the word-count.

But this? This is vastly worse.

I'm looking into a thing called LibreOffice, but it doesn't seem to have a bug-free way to edit documents in Rich Text Format (the one WordPad saves things to).

I have been using LibreOffice and OpenOffice for like fifteen years, which includes when I was on Mac. I've used it for RTF files with no problems many times. What difficulties are you having?

Thanks for your concern, @madgastronomer, but as I mentioned in this reblog, I've decided to go with Atlantis Word Processor for now.

To answer your question, I didn't actually get as far as trying LibreOffice; when I was looking them up I (a) couldn't see ".rtf" in their list of supported file formats, and (b) came across user comments saying they'd found bugs that made their RTFs look weird. And then a friend pointed me to Atlantis Word Processor and I started doing a free trial and so far it's doing pretty well and it says that once I choose to register it I'll pay once and I'll own a copy forever, which is extremely appealing.

I use Libre Office and I've started saving files in Rich Text Format all the time. It defaults to wanting to save in .odt but you can select .rtf and it gives you a notice about potentially losing formatting, but it's never really been an issue for me.

But if you've found a solution that works for you, I hope it does everything you need and more.

The rampant existence of body-modifying magics mean that there are a LOT of characters that might start out cisgender... and they might still PRESENT as such... but that doesn't always mean that it matches what's in their pants.

Folks act like "maybe the author isn't the final authority about what their work means" is some wanky post-modern nonsense and not a simple recognition that a lot of authors are perfectly prepared to bullshit about their own work. Like, leaving big-name popular media aside, I have personally encountered authors being actively disingenuous about their own work for all of the following reasons:

A true answer wouldn't fit the image they've cultivated.

They've decided they like the explanation the readers/viewers have come up with better than what they actually had in mind.

Something that was originally intended as a standalone work ended up growing into a franchise or series, and now they're pretending that was the plan all along for some reason.

They don't want to admit that the bit you're asking about is genuinely just a plot hole.

The real answer gets into some shit they don't care to discuss, so they've prepared a cover story to explain away the parts they don't want to talk about.

Their politics have changed since they wrote it, but they don't want to acknowledge that, so they're constantly trying to re-interpret everything they've ever written to be perfectly consistent with whatever their positions are this week.

They wrote it decades ago and they honestly don't remember what they were thinking at the time, so they're just making shit up; sometimes they also don't remember what shit they made up the last time, so the answer is different every time they're asked.

The work in question is at least partly autobiographical and they can't tell the truth without confessing to a crime in the process.

Most of the good bits are plagiarised and they don't really understand it themselves.

They're lying to you on purpose, for evil reasons.

Tim Cain, the original creator of the Fallout series, recently said that "critique of capitalism was never the point of the Fallout games."

Tim Cain is either lying, or he genuinely does not realize that critique of the United States (which he also said was never the point of the games, which is just straight-up an even bigger lie) is inextricably linked to critique of capitalism. You can't have the former without the latter.

His claim is that the games ‐ "if they're about anything" - are about the inevitability of war given human nature. Anyone who has interfaced with these games beyond a middle school understanding of politics knows that this is not the case. Again, he's either lying, or he somehow did that accidentally, multiple times.

In my experience, the possibility that he repeatedly did it by accident isn't terribly unlikely. There are a lot of authors who really are just trying to write about how humanity inherently sucks, but their view of humanity is so parochial that they genuinely can't tell the difference between "human nature" and "American popular culture", so they end up writing an indictment of the latter without ever meaning to.

I have said it before, I will probably say it again even after this. Sometimes things happen in stories that were neve *consciously* intended, but once they're noticed a person has three and only three options. And they HAVE to make a choice, even if it's not a conscious one in the case of one option.

They can ignore it. This is usually the default if someone just wants to pretend that it never happened and hope that no one else will notice it.

They can retcon it out of there. This is sometimes a legitimate choice if what was noticed is a... shall we say Embarrassing Artifact of Old Prejudices. I don't tend to like this, but sometimes it IS necessary.

My favorite option is to run with the idea and see how far it can take the story. Things are GOING to happen unintentionally, but they don't happen for no damn reason. Sometimes things create points of resonance and they exist because there's something important going on there. Embracing it (when it's not, like, harmful and unexamined prejudice and preconceptions) is usually the easiest path to take. It's also the most interesting one because then the consequences and interrelation of things can start to flow out and things can get fascinating along the way.

And if the same themes and relationships keep showing up... maybe that says something about the author that they might need to start to pay attention to. Hell, that's part of how I started to realize that I Was Not Straight.

I was NEVER the only one with my name growing up. There was almost always at least one other with this particular flower name in just about every class I was in my entire educational career and I know at least one time in college where I was one of *three* people with my name.

Someday I'm probably going to change it. I've never liked it, never felt like it was particularly right and in light of my death and resurrection three years ago, I identify much more with Tabitha anyway. At least as Tabitha I get to reference cats, resurrection, clothing creation, and compassion for others all at the same time.

I love seeing comments about how much people liked my stuff, and what they liked and why they liked it 'cause it definitely DOES give me more appreciation for what I actually do RIGHT. I've been training my craft in isolation for most of my life. It's damn near impossible for me to accurately judge what I'm doing right and what I'm doing wrong 'cause I'm too close to the weeds to see the trees around me.

The only way I'll improve is if I'm able to get feedback that helps me focus on something constructive. And I want to improve. I want to write better. I want to BE better. And that's incredibly difficult. Anything is easy if you don't care, but I care, a LOT.

So yeah, I live for comments that make me reread my own stuff with more appreciation for the work.
