The ancient Greek concept of a siren and harpy have gotten conflated over time through Western European imagery in the Middle Ages so I wanted to create an illustration to celebrate the differences between the sisters of the sea.

Okay so I got some interest in my post talking about Hera so let’s start! (Please note some of this is UPG - please do your own research as well!)

For context Hera has been my primary Patron deity for several years now. Doesn’t mean I don’t also work with other gods, I just have the strongest relationship with her.

Hera initially reached out to me, and originally I turned her down because let’s be honest, she comes across as kind of scary/intimidating in her myths. So I told her no, I wasn’t able to give her the proper setup/offerings/respect she was owed, and I wasn’t going to start a dynamic with a deity I didn’t feel I could properly worship.

And she respected that - until it became an excuse. I was mentally in a better place and was using my own fears as an excuse not to worship her rather than a reason. So I said you know what, fair, let’s start.

Here’s the thing about Hera: she demands the respect she knows she is due. And yes, this can be intimidating at first. However, it’s something she’s taught me to demand for myself. Demand the respect you deserve just for existing. Don’t settle for less. Some people are not worth your time or energy, so don’t let them get under your skin.

Also she’s good with mommy issues.

As a side note, in working with Hera you have to at least make peace with your view of Zeus. She is married to him and she takes that very seriously. It does please her when you show him respect as well not only as her husband but as king of Olympus. You don’t have to worship him as well, but you do at least have to be respectful toward him. This is my recommendation if you choose to work with Hera.

Hera is the type of goddess who will call you out on your shit, but I’ve also learned that she is fiercely defensive and protective of her own. If you build a positive relationship with her, she will look after you. She can be selfish and petty yes, that is true. But she is also extremely loyal and nurturing which I personally feel she does not get enough credit for.

Also when she’s mad oh boy look out. (I’ve never had her mad at me but I’ve seen occasions where she gets frustrated with someone else in my life and may or may not choose to intervene as a result. I’m fairly certain the only reason she tolerates my mom is because I care about my mom and am working on building a better relationship with her.)

So if you want to work on boundaries, mommy issues, confidence, learning to be yourself, being family oriented, I would highly recommend working on building a positive relationship with Hera.

Obviously she is the goddess of women/marriage so if marriage is something you either look forward to or want to take seriously in your life, she’s also excellent to work with. One of the ways I honor her is by trying to be a better husband and hopefully future father. My devotion to my family is an act of worship.

There’s plenty of correspondences out there on the web, but sometimes I just offer my morning coffee to her as a way to just say thank you for being in my life. Make sure the vessel is washed and your hands are washed (khernips if you’re familiar with that) and just start by making an offering, something that means a lot to you but is still accessible to you.

If you respect and revere Hera she will more than likely take care of you as well. Approach her with humility and respect.

Hera Boopis - means cow eyed, often used in Homeric hymns to represent beauty/divinity

Hera Basilea - queen Hera

Hera Gamelii - Hera as one presiding over marriage

Hera Zygia - Hera as one presiding over marriage, also given to Zeus

I also personally associate her with citrine although she tends to be more commonly associated with blue and green gemstones due to her association with peacocks.

Greek vs Roman Gods

This is my personal gnosis, if it doesn't resonate with you, that's fine.

I see the relationship between the Greek Gods and their Roman counterparts as sets of fraternal twins. "Genetically" (like the parts of the collective unconscious and the specific energies of the greater universe that makes up these deities) they are almost the same. But they don't actually *express* these energies and concepts in the same way or even to the same people. Some parts may look very similar, but they are separate entities with distinct expressions.

I feel like this same concept can be generalized to other pantheons as well, but instead of twins they are cousins. Similar DNA and universal roles but from different "family units" the way cousins would be, or in this case more specifically, cultural contexts.

TL;DR--even the gods are just made up of star dust and though they may look alike, it's just because they share genetics. They are not the same. Divine nature vs nurture lol

This isn’t adding ice just for the sake of denial, it’s adding to the Earth’s albedo. This in turn actually makes the Earth’s climate cooler, and then more ice will be produced naturally because of this.

It isn’t a process we need to continue forever, in fact it’s one that needs to be calculated so that we don’t do it TOO MUCH. The only worry would be cooling down too much.

So yes, this is a good idea. It simply isn’t the only thing we should do because we still have gross pollution.

Here’s the thing: Most environmental catastrophes humans have ever or are currently creating can be fixed. It’s not just a matter of “oh no, things are ruined, and maybe we can stop the degradation so that things don’t get any worse, but we’re stuck with how things are.” There are some things we can’t do, like bringing back extinct species. But there are a lot of other things we can definitely do, many of which are being done right now. The problem is that most of our willpower and effort is spent on bullshit tiny things that won’t solve the problem (individual recycling, etc.) and not on the large-scale things that can and will make a large-scale difference.

Ice caps are melting? Guess what! We know how to make ice. It’s not that hard. Designing mostly-automated robot ships to go to the poles and rebuild the ice caps is well within our current technical capabilities. We just need to fund it.

Deforestation on a massive scale? Destruction of other biomes? Guess what! We know how to plant trees. We know how to plant grasslands. We know how to take barren, lifeless land and turn it back into a viable biome. It’s not that hard. In a lot of cases, if there’s neighboring areas where that biome still exists, all you have to do is dump a few tons of biomass (plant clippings, food waste, etc.) on the barren land and stand back and wait. The biomass will provide nutrients and keep the topsoil from blowing away, and the plants and animals from the neighboring biome will move in. In two decades, even if you don’t do anything besides dumping the biomass on it, you won’t be able to tell what was the barren area and what was the still-existing biome.

Coral reefs dying? Now, coral reefs are a bit more fragile than most biomes, but guess what! We still know how to replant/rebuild them, and in fact are working on that in places affected by coral reef die-off! And we’re learning how to do it better every day.

Desertification? Guess what! We know how to turn desert back into green space. They’re doing it on a large scale in China and sub-Saharan Africa. There are several different techniques, none of which are even very technology-intensive. It takes money and time and labor, but it’s perfectly doable. We know this because we’ve done it.

Plastic in the ecosystem, particularly in the ocean? Guess what! There’s a lot of people working on this, both on “how to remove plastic from the ocean” and “how to reuse/recycle it more efficiently.” And the techniques are improving by leaps and bounds every year. This is a solvable problem. These are all solvable problems.

So if you’re crushed by the weight of the coming environmental catastrophe … don’t be. These are all solvable problems! We can stop things from getting worse, and we can fix the things we’ve broken. The issue is political, not practical.

On the political side, of course, is the need to tighten up environmental regulations across the globe. (What’s the statistic, that 90% of pollution is caused by 100 corporations?) And then of course, we need to fund these programs on a large enough scale.

In some ways the political aspect is the hardest, but consider this: we are at a tipping point. Things are changing about the way politicians talk about climate change and ecological degradation. More ordinary people are concerned about this, which means more pressure on politicians. One of the ways that things are changing is that people–even conservatives–are starting to talk about “job opportunities in new green fields” and switching the conversation so that it’s not “rainforest vs. jobs” makes political action a lot more possible. And no, it’s not going to happen on its own, but it can happen.

This is a solvable problem.
